GENERAL DESCRIPTION:

A proposed City Hall with Filipino-Modern Vernacular Design

BACKGROUND OF THE PROJECT:

In local government, City Hall is the chief administrative building of a city. It houses the city

council, associated departments, and serves as the base of the city mayor. It is also one of

the city’s most symbolically important building, which expresses the transparency of the

democratic process.

As a symbol of local government, city hall has a very distinct architecture as it leaves a

visual legacy for the city it represents.

STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM:

In view of stimulating a real scenario in architectural design practice, prepare a Design

Proposal for the Relocation of an existing City Hall of a selected city/area. The pursuit of the

activity is in line with the course objective of undertaking architectural exercises in space

planning with a special focus on Filipino Modern-Vernacular Architecture.

The design proposal shall entail first a general assessment (virtual assessment) of the

existing city hall building considering the following major parameters:

Space Planning:

Adequacy of existing office spaces against the number of users and clients;

Contiguity and preferred proximity of related offices and sections;

Overall convenience of end-users and clients alike; flexibility for expansion;

Others.

Building Character:

Appropriateness of the existing building and envelope to a government

institution:

The projected public image of the structure in relation to its service to the
community.

Filipino Culture:

Proper consideration of Filipino culture, customs and the like in the

planning of the spaces (like multi-purpose hall for various programs and

social activities of employees, pantry rooms for “baon-eating staff, sports

facilities both for staff and public, sufficient waiting areas for extended

family members of clients, etc.)

Site Planning:

Proper and strategic location of the municipal hall:

Adequacy of parking spaces;

Accessibility of clients;

Others

As a group of upcoming groups innovative architects, prepare the

necessary relocation/redevelopment of your chosen city hall based on

your research.
