LNHS Caters Grade 11 Program
To implement DepEd’s K+12
Basic Education Curriculum,
Luakan National High School
organized its senior high school
program and opened its enrolment
for Grade 11 last April 22.
Pursuant to Republic Act
10533, otherwise known as
“Enhanced Basic Education Act of
2013”, LNHS conducted a series
of career guidance, orientation
program and pre-registration for the
candidates for Grade 11 together
with their parents as early as
October 2015.

conducted by the LNHS

available physical, monetary, and
human resources, LNHS offered
two tracks, Academic Track
and Technical, Vocational and
Livelihood (TVL) Track. For the
academic track, LNHS opened two
strands, Accountancy, Business
and Management (ABM) and
Humanities and Social Sciences
(HUMSS). For the TVL, LNHS
offers four strands, namely,
Shielded Metal Arc Welding
(SMAW), Electrical Installation
and Maintenance, Garments and
Food and Beverage (F&B).
In preparation for the national
contest, Lagman underwent a two-
day Regional Intensive Training at
Otel Apartel, San Fernando City,
Pampanga with his Luakan Lights

DC. Miralles and other student-
contestants to represent Central
Luzon.
“I expect that he will give his
best in the competition and apply
what he has learned in the Regional
Training for NSPC Qualifiers” said

2010 and Dinalupihan last 2011.

Operation at Brgy. Bangal,
Dinalupihan and Sitio Pastulan,
Brgy. Tipo, Hermosa to make sure
that mosquitoes with malaria from
Olongapo City will not penetrate
the said areas.

updates on the quality assurance for
MedTechs’ Malaria Microscopy.

Rep. Randolph S. Ting has recently
approved the proposed “Caregivers
Welfare Act” (House Bill No. 269)
that seeks to institute policies for the
protection of the rights of caregivers
in the country and promotion of their
welfare.
HB 269 is authored by Rep.
Geraldine B. Roman (1st District,
Bataan) which also seeks to ensure the
policies that will maintain excellent
and globally competitive standards for
the caregiver professional service.
Other than nurses, Filipino
caregivers are in demand here and
abroad because of their “unconditional
and genuine care for their clients.”
They work in private homes, board
and care homes, and in health care
facilities.
Based on a published report,
caregivers are classified only as
“other” workers and they fall under
the third preference employment-
based category.
To work as a caregiver, one does
not have to possess a bachelor’s
degree but needs only a high school
diploma and a few months of work
experience.

To spice up the week, LNHS
popularity of professional caregivers
in the Philippines and abroad has
prompted the government to require
all caregiving schools in the country
to register their caregiving program
with the Technical Education and
Skills Development Authority
(TESDA), which is tasked to manage
and supervise technical education and
skills development.
“Caregivers must also be protected
against abuse, harassments, violence
and economic exploitation. These
proposed policies must also be
enacted into law to maintain excellent
and globally competitive standards for
the caregiver professional service,”
Roman reiterated.
Roman’s bill also mandate the
Department of Labor and Employment
(DOLE) to develop a model
employment contract for caregivers
which shall be made available at all
times, free of charge to caregivers,
employers, and the general public.
The bill also seeks to provide
fixed working hours based on the
employment contract signed by the
parties and in accordance with the
labor laws, rules and regulations. A
rest period of 8 hours or at least 24
hours per week is also suggested to be
enforced depending on the caregiver’s
preference.

Computer Science Education
Week and Code.org, held
from Dec. 5 to 11, and hosted
by the City Schools Division
of Balanga and Provincial
Schools Division of Bataan,
it aims to introduce millions
of students to one hour
of computer science and
computer programming.
Thousands of students
from all public schools in the
province tried the entertaining
and stimulating computer
programming exercises.
This activity is designed to
“demystify” and show that
anybody can learn the basics,
and to widen participation in
the field of computer science.
It has since become a
worldwide effort to celebrate
computer science, starting
with 1-hour coding activities
but expanding to all sorts of
community efforts.

ince June 8, school fights
within LNHS and so in other
schools have been recorded.
Apparently, the number of incidences
is not so alarming to cause upheaval
within the campus. However,
violence, ranging from bullying to
brawls must not happen at all cost
inside the school grounds.
With that in mind, let us all
admit it—It’s kind of scary to think
that supposedly safe schools are
now turning into mini war zones.
The safety of the students are not
guaranteed anymore. We are already
tired of seeing this thing draw crowds

could be a lot better. These fights are
usually pointless and start up from
very childish reasons. It is quite
common to see two girls tearing
off each other’s uniform or pulling
each other’s hair in behalf of their
beloved boy band or out of antipathy.

still find its way out. It’s because
we, students are missing the entire
point. If we want to be safe, start it
from ourselves. The school through
its School Governing Committee
(SGC), particularly, the Child
Protection /Discipline Committee, is
already doing its part why can’t we?
School policies and regulations
are not enough to stop school
fights. However, full and strict
implementation of policies made
to keep up with the present youth
dilemma and campus situations
would really make a difference.
Hence, teachers, advisers, school
administration, Parent Teachers’
Association (PTA), local government
units (LGUs), Department of
Education (DepEd), the Philippine
Congress and Senate, as law-making
bodies, and private individuals
should meet minds and join hands on
this.
Furthermore, to totally clear
these war zones, students must be
solidly responsible for their own
safety. Discipline is badly needed
for us students to save ourselves
from our own temper, aggression, or
insensitivity. If each of us will do his/
her part, school violence would just
be a piece of cake.

In telling the truth, you don't have
Fun Learning: Quo Vadis?
An old adage says that all work without
play makes Jack a dull boy. If that holds
true then why is that learning through fun
and recreation seem to be undervalued in
our school?
Last October 2016, the intramurals
every student was excited about was
cancelled by the administration thinking
that there’s no need to push it through given
that players were already selected and
trained for the Unit Meet. 2017 commenced
and still no Palarong Pinoy, no concert-for
a cause, no in-house camping, no Science
and Math Trails, no dance troupes, no glee
club and no theatre company—just the
regular programs and GPTA events that
were even less advertised and, thus, viewed
by only few Luakenians.
Absence of the aforesaid activities
might be the outgrowth of time and
resource constraints. Giving the school
the benefit of the doubt, we may think that
the administration is just ensuring time-
on-task policy is upheld. That’s soothing
and convincing but how about the way
classroom activities are run? Though some
new blood and some seasoned teachers
are taking time in infusing music, dance,
film viewing, charades, bring-me, puzzles,
plays, speech choir, jazz chant, readers’

As people pass from childhood into teen
years, their bodies develop and change. So do
their emotions and feelings. LGBT- Lesbian
Gay Bisexual and Transgender. Sexual
orientation is a big question to our country.
We all know that not everyone has accepted
the fact that there are third sex.
HURT. HUMILIATED. HARASSED.
That’s what they feel. But despite of being
down on what people think about being their
self, they made it an inspiration to live their
life to fullest. Most of us thinks that they are
the plague of society. Admit it or not, every
time you see gays, lesbians, transgender and
etcetera it irritates you. You don’t want to
see people like them hanging around. We are
already judging them without knowing the
reason why are they that. Yes they know that it
is a sin, but they didn’t choose to be like that.
It is their feelings that dictate them.
As time goes by, people are now aware
about LGBT. Our society is debating
whether to consider this people or not. As an
individual, we all have the rights to be free. It
is not inevitable to see LGBT everywhere. In
Luakan National High School, there are lots
of LGBT. They are not ashamed of being their
selves. Everyone knows about their sexual
preference. Their families already know about
it but one out of the five people says that
their families doesn’t know about it. They are
afraid that their families and love ones can’t
accept the fact that they are one of the third
sex. Fears of rejection or bullying can lead
people who aren’t straight to keep their sexual
orientation secret, even from family and
friends who might not support them. Indeed
it is very hard to tell someone that you’re
not as straight as a ruler. We’re not perfect.
No one is perfect. We all commit mistakes.
But even though their families accepted their
sexuality, it is not that easy for their father to
accept them whole heartedly. Some people
says it’s just their father’s ego that’s why
they can’t accept it. But let’s not argue about
it. The important thing is, they accept their
child and love their child despite on who their
child is. “Let us understand that sexuality is
as wide as sea. Understand that your morality
is not law. Understand that we are you. It is
our decision and you don’t have the rights to

There should be fun while learning, how
can a student enjoy being in school if it’s just
like an empty home –Boring. The teachers
and the principal are, to some extent, are
accountable of the boredom looming in
every corner of the room. Teachers should
unlearn some of their antique techniques
and try some of the 21st century. As old
folks say, not all learning can be found in
the four corners of the classroom.
Teachers follow the SMART principle
in teaching and setting objectives, 21st
Century teaching, however, prescribe
instruction following the SMARTER
guideline. Specific, Measurable, Attainable,
Realistic, Time-bound, Enjoyable and
relevant.
Learning happens when learners find
meaning in what they are learning. For
lessons to be meaningful they must be
connected to the learners’ life and they
must be affecting, touching, practical and
enjoyable. When learning becomes sheer
joy, there is no need for teachers to exert
much effort in making students attend their
classes. Students themselves shall come to
their classes with the will to learn.

are all free to have our own opinion but we

back then on Elementary days, I saw some
children bullying gays. I know that they are

painful to see that sight. I am not saying that
this happens to all gays or lesbians but most of
them are bullied. We can’t change the fact that
judging someone is our instinct. It is an inborn
attitude that we can’t change.

Milk. Gender Equality. That’s what we need.
Because at the end of the day, you will realize
that gender is just a gender, in the eyes of God
we are all equal.
If you can’t accept others preferences,
you should learn how to respect it. We all
know that third sex are not accepted in lot of
countries because they do believe that it is a
sin. Being what you are is not a sin. It is a free
will. If being a gay is what’s makes you happy,
so be it. Don’t let others dictate your life. It is
you who makes your own decision and your
own fate.

immortal issue, has been talked about in
every corner of our country today—from

and the Sangguniang Bayan Members,
conducted a Students’ Congress and
Teachers’ Seminar/Forum on the nature,
scope, provisions, and sanctions in DepEd
Order No. 40, s. 2014 popularly known as
‘Child Protection Policy’. The humorous

The Department of Education through
local offices has replayed these informative
lectures. Has it made a dramatic difference?
Every student experienced bullying

Protection Policy DepEd No. 40, s. 2014,
there are still hostile and insensitive people
who find enjoyment in hurting others.

Since its first implementation, the 2013
Enhanced Basic Education Act (RA 10533)
or popularly known as K to 12 program has
already been criticized from head to toe.
Aside from a shopping list of flaws that this
seemingly half-baked law has, until now it
is still unclear if it will make it in our school
system the way its proponents envisioned.
Even though K to 12 faces a lot of problems,
DepEd is still doing its best to fully
implement this law by 2016. Thousands
of rooms are not yet built, books are
scarce, and purchase of learning tools and
equipment are under budget. Despite all
these, our government is confident that this
law will make a difference. In short, we are
in a do or die situation.
K to 12 aims to improve our education by
adding 2 more years to the existing 10 years
of basic education. DepEd insists that it
will drastically increase the productivity of
future students by giving them enough time
and experience to learn. It seems like it’s a
pretty innocent law but the truth behind is

R
efreshed, Relaxed, Calm
and Serene…my eyes are no
longer in tears; they are now
reinvigorated…my heart is no longer
burdened; it is now floating like a feather
in the wind kissing the fresh green grass
on a humble meadow.
I sat on the concrete structure serving
as bench along the corridor of the
Grade 8 Building. I whispered, “These
green patches of vegetables…those
succulent tomatoes hanging from the
tender twigs…the scent of the tomato
leaves…the curly tendrils of patola…the
waxy pechay foliage…the bluish purple
blooms of sitaw and bataw…and the
gentle movement of the creeping vines
lending beauty to the corners of the rear
side of our school.
At the moment, I paused and reflected
on the events that have happened in my
life. I counted the events---the bitter
ones---the frustrating ones---and the
disappointing ones. I felt that I’ve been
like a seed struggling to hide from the
site of a seed-eating bird, trying to absorb
that cool and nourishing water to push
out my flesh and grow.
I paused again and stared upon the
lush greens planted in the garden of Mrs.
Canlas. That moment, I know GOD was
with me. It felt as if God was just beside
me—softly and tenderly revealing the
lessons of life I could have embraced if
only I was open and mature enough. All
these years, I’ve been perfectionist and
controlling. I can’t easily accept, or let
me say, make even one mistake. Spelling,
pronunciation, missed mathematical or
scientific unit, disarranged books on
the shelf, a classmate’s forgetfulness,
a frank comment of my Mother, and a
line of eight grade in any of my subjects.
I can’t bear them. But then again, I
remember, before the vegetable garden
before my eyes grew like a blooming
lady, many seedlings died, some were
twice uprooted, others were even thrice
transplanted—and yet all those bitter and
hurting processes that might have dried
the roots led this garden to the bearing of
fruits.
Many students passed by. I heard
two friends making fun of my height
and physique. I unintentionally heard
that voice judging my appearance. My
positive spirit was at the verge of shaking
and trembling. But God didn’t leave me
down and hopeless. He tapped my back
and raised my head to the direction of
the lettuce and the cluster pechay. God
reminded me that the best things in life
come in small packages. Analogous
to the leafy and vitamin-rich bok choy
(pechay) and cabbage that sprout from
tiny seeds smaller than a grain of salt, a
man capable of many things start from
being a helpless baby; sweet marriage
and successful family life arise from a
simple hello; the ocean raised by each
drop of rain and the powerful joy in a
teenager’s heart brought by a simple
touching note coming from the grand
piano. I realized that in life one has just
to be patient to grow and achieve what
his/her heart desires. Tiny things become
great things when watered with patience,
endurance, wisdom, humility, and faith.
Rrrrrrrrrrrriiiing…I heard the bell
ring and I was zapped back to reality
telling that I have to move on now and
attend my classes. After all, vines grow,
vegetables lose their flowers but bears
fruit for everyone’s table, spring comes
after winter and the rain quenches the
dry soil in summer. Vegetable gardens
like the Gulayan sa Paaralan of Luakan
National High School are not just grown
for food for the body but also food for the
mind and nourishment for the soul.

STRESS: The Teenage Menace

to challenges. The way you handle
everyday-challenges determines
your stress levels. At high levels,
stress can interfere with a student’s ability
to learn, memorize, and earn good grades
-- as well as lead to poor physical, emotional
and mental health. Stress, on the lighter side,
gives you an extra boost of adrenalin rush
and triggers your body system to cope
with challenges. But beyond your
comfort zone, stress stops being
helpful and can start causing
major damage to
your mind and
body. Stress is
something
that should
be taken
calmly

seriously and with the help of family, friends,
school and community.
School is just one reason of stress. Bullying
is one too, but…staying on the topic this is
the very reason of stress among teens—

students try to impress their

more stressful especially for busy students.
Beyond grades, peer pressure, relationship
problems, family trouble, low self-esteem,
financial instability and identity crisis pump up
high level of stress. This can get one to think
that there is no reason to live. Some students
think that their lives were a failure and they just
want to end their miserable lives, instead of
suffering a life that s/he thinks s/he can’t
fit in. Nine out of ten teen deaths
are caused by stress. If
a teenager is
currently facing these problems, s/he thinks
that there is no one to confide his/her secrets,
tell his/her problems and ask for pieces of
advice. S/he might just stay in his/her bedroom.
S/he thinks that s/he is all alone in the
world with no one right there to support
her. So, some teens turn into rebels and
get addicted to drugs. Some teens even get
pushed to rehabilitation centers and
find no recovery. Some teens find drugs
thinking that these substances can help
them forget the bitter experiences. This
might lead to a bigger problem such as
suicide.
Being stressed is a solvable-problem that
you can easily conquer. It is important for you

So Near, Yet So Far

P
articipating in athletic competitions has been
a habit of Luakan National High School.
Dominating and winning, on the other hand,
have been a random experience analogous to
occasional happenings. Now, it seems that victory
lies on luck or on the innate ability of the athlete.
Our athletes are undoubtedly full of talent and
potential but lack of training and support keeps
them away from giving us glory. Many people say
that it depends on the athletes if they want to win or
not. This is definitely NOT true. Training and funds
really make a difference.
In an informal interview with Mrs. Flordeliza
R. Dionisio, a MAPEH teacher-coach in our
school, she admitted that our school truly doesn't
pay much attention to sports development. This is
pretty alarming. Our school’s half-baked effort to
foster athleticism throughout the school year and
not only during sports contests is a slap on the face
of Luakan National High School. Those students
are determined to win, ready to fight, but look at
our system. If we will always be lax on preparing
our athletes to perform at par, their talents will be
wasted.
Training is very important in honing one's skills
and talents. Without it, even the most talented athlete
will surely suffer and be left behind. Compared to
other schools that give their students an ample time
to practice, our school really likes to do it Filipino
style. Trainings are only conducted if the competition
is really near. Last minute training helps just a little
bit. Many believe that training must be done by the
athletes themselves. That's not true. No matter how
gifted you are, you will still need some supervision
of a more trained and educated person.
Lack of funding is also a culprit in this case. Let's
say you are full packed with talents, and properly
trained but proper pieces of equipment are scarce,
and you didn't eat well, could you even finish a
game? Luckily, our school doesn't suffer that much
in terms of funding. Teachers ensure that each athlete
is in good condition when s/he is about to fight. It's a
miracle if you are able to finish a one kilometer dash
without eating anything and you are really hungry.
Thanks to our teachers, they didn't and won't let that
to happen.
LNHS is a home for students that have good
potential in sports. If they're given appropriate
training and attention, they will surely bring
home the bacon or maybe even ham. For the next
generation of athletes that will carry our school's
name, for heaven’s sake give them what they
need. Train them properly and give them support.
Eventually, all of these sacrifices will pay off with
trophies and medals that will regain our school’s
pride and make excellence not a choice but a habit.

Graduating forward Jeron Teng was
named Finals MVP for the second time in
his UAAP career after averaging 19 points
on 52% shooting along with 3.5 rebounds
and 2.5 assists.
Teng, who won his second UAAP
crown, had a defining game-high 28 points
on 60% shooting from the field in Game 2
to lead DLSU.
Ben Mbala posted 18 points, 10
rebounds, two steals, and two blocks
while Kib Montalbo added 9 markers, all of
3-point range.
The Green Archers claimed their 9th
UAAP title and have now won two of their
5 finals duels against the Blue Eagles as
they fulfilled every expectation for them this
year, with highly-touted big man Mbala also
clinching the Most Valuable Player honor.

after Ateneo dealt them their only loss this
season in the second round. That defeat

blemish all year as they went 26-1 in
competition including the FilOil preseason

Head coach Aldin Ayo also became a
back-to-back champion coach in the UAAP
and the NCAA, after he led the Letran
Knights to the title last year. Ayo gravitated
toward the two biggest collegiate rivalries
in the country as he likewise went to battle
with Letran against fierce rival San Beda
last season.
Ayo is the first coach to win titles back-
to-back in the UAAP and the NCAA in the
UAAP Final Four era.
This veteran La Salle squad, led by
Mbala and Teng and with its “Mayhem”
mentality, outplayed the younger Ateneo
side, which was not expected to reach
the finals as it rebuilds in the post-Kiefer
Ravena era.
The Archers raced to a 13-point lead
in the first half and controlled the tempo
of the game from then on, responding
emphatically every time the Eagles came
close.
The lead grew to 14-point bulges in
the third before Ateneo rallied to within 6
