DEALA, KhrisJoseJrL - BS ARCH 2-3 - TOA 2 - Act 3
In this activity, I chose to compare the design philosophy of two great Architects: Louis Kahn and Antoni
Gaudi. These two have different styles in architecture that’s why their design process and works are perfect
for this activity.
As these two have different approaches in creating their artworks, both of them actually uses models to
express their designs. While Gaudi uses clay and Kahn uses the effects of light, they like to innovate and
experiment with their design to create functional, practical, and aesthetically pleasing structures during their
time.
The works of Kahn like the National Assembly Building in Dhaka and Salk Institute make me feel excited
and amazed. These structures are formed using geometric shapes, and I really like it this way. Although I
like deconstructivism, I also do like simple forms because it captivates me to look around. The reason
behind this is probably the design process of Kahn. As he used light and shadow to manipulate space and
blend his structure in nature, it makes me feel contented and excited at the same time. And I think this also
proves that you don’t need to be fancy to attract attention, because Kahn’s simple forms captivates me and
left a legacy in field of architecture.
On the other hand, Gaudi’s Park Güell and Sagrada Família looks intricate and vibrant. His works stands
out by incorporating organic forms and natural elements. The use of flowing lines, round shapes, and
intricate details feels so natural and emits calmness. His experimentation and innovation towards materials
produces visually stunning and textured structures.
While these architects differ in design process, philosophies, and forms, I think both of them shares
commitment to incorporating architecture in nature. While the creativity and intricacy of Gaudi’s design
contrasts with Kahn’s simple composition, both created structures that is practical and functional for user
experience. Both architects also integrate their work in nature as Gaudi uses organic forms, biomorphic
shapes, and embracing imperfections to connect in nature, while Kahn’s simple and geometric forms, and
the use of light and shadow allows his structure to harmonize with nature. The design process of these two
highlights the richness and diversity in how we express our architectural ideas.
