Grade Level: Grade 4 Subject: English Topic: Identifying Proper and

Common Nouns

Learning Objectives:

1. Students will be able to identify and differentiate between proper and


common nouns.
2. Students will be able to use proper and common nouns correctly in
sentences.
3. Students will be able to apply their knowledge of proper and common
nouns in their writing.

Standards:

1. Demonstrate understanding of nouns as naming words (DepEd


Philippines English Grade 4 Curriculum Guide, p. 10).
2. Identify and differentiate between common and proper nouns (DepEd
Philippines English Grade 4 Curriculum Guide, p. 10).
3. Use nouns correctly in sentences (DepEd Philippines English Grade 4
Curriculum Guide, p. 10).

Materials:

 Chart paper
 Marker pens
 Worksheet on proper and common nouns
 Index cards
 Small objects or pictures representing common and proper nouns (e.g.,
toy car, country flag)

Procedure:

1. Introduction (10 minutes) a. Begin the lesson by displaying a chart


paper with the heading "Naming Words" written on it. b. Ask the
students if they know what naming words are, and elicit responses.
Write down their answers on the chart paper. c. Explain that naming
words are words that we use to name people, places, things, and
animals. d. Tell the students that today, they will be learning
specifically about two types of naming words: proper and common
nouns.
2. Direct Instruction (15 minutes) a. Define proper and common nouns
using simple and relatable examples.
o Proper Noun: A noun that names a specific person, place, thing,
or animal. It always begins with a capital letter.
o Common Noun: A noun that names any person, place, thing, or
animal. It does not begin with a capital letter unless it appears at
the beginning of a sentence.

b. Provide additional examples of proper and common nouns and ask the
students to identify which category each noun belongs to.

3. Guided Practice (15 minutes) a. Distribute a worksheet on proper and


common nouns to each student. b. Instruct the students to read the
sentences on the worksheet and underline the proper nouns in one color
and the common nouns in another color. c. Monitor and provide
assistance as needed.
4. Interactive Activity: Noun Sorting (20 minutes) a. Divide the class into
small groups and provide each group with a set of index cards and
small objects or pictures representing common and proper nouns. b.
Instruct each group to sort the index cards into two piles: one for
common nouns and another for proper nouns. c. Students should also
match the small objects or pictures to the corresponding index cards. d.
Once the sorting is complete, have each group present their sorted
nouns to the class, explaining why they categorized them as common or
proper.
5. Application (15 minutes) a. Ask the students to write five sentences
using proper nouns and five sentences using common nouns.
Encourage creativity and variety in their sentence construction. b.
Collect and review the students' sentences, providing feedback and
corrections as necessary.
6. Conclusion (5 minutes) a. Recap the main points of the lesson,
emphasizing the differences between proper and common nouns. b.
Allow time for any remaining questions or clarifications.

 Observations during group activities and class discussions
 Completion and accuracy of the worksheet on proper and common
nouns
 Correct usage of proper and common nouns in sentences written during
the application activity

Extensions:

1. Students can create flashcards with common and proper nouns on one
side and their definitions on the other side.
2. Students can create their own story or paragraph using a variety of
proper and common nouns.
3. Students can play a game of "Noun Charades" where they act out a
noun and the class has to guess if it is a common or proper noun.
