If there is a monument that has become a symbol of the city of San Francisco is,

without any doubt, The Golden Gate Bridge.

The Golden Gate Bridge receives the name with which John Fremont baptized in
1846 to the strait that gives passage to the Bay of San Francisco. Although the
truth is that Fremont was not very original since, traditionally, the Bosphorus strait
was already known by the name of "The Golden Gate". Until its construction, it was
the ferry system that was responsible for transporting cars from one side of the bay
to the other, but the growth of road traffic was such that bridges had to be designed
after the First World War.

The Golden Gate Bridge connects the San Francisco peninsula to the north with
southern Marin County and is the most famous bridge in the area, although the
main bridge is still the Bay Bridge in the city of San Francisco.

The structure was designed by engineer John Strauss and was built between 1933
and 1937, but not before struggling for financing after the collapse of the New York
Stock Exchange in 1929. At the time of its construction it was the longest and
highest hanging structure in the world, with almost 2 km of hanging structure.

For example, one of the curiosities of the bridge is where its characteristic orange-
red color comes from and it is none other than the original rust guard. They liked it
so much at the time that they decided to make that the paint color.

A curious fact, The Golden Gate Bridge records a high number of suicides per
year. That's the reason why in 2014 a steel mesh was placed along the entire
length of the bridge.
