-A MICROPROJECTON-

"OLDHAMS COUPLING"

1.0 Aims/Benefits of the microproject

-5-
A coupling for parallel shafts slightly out of line consists of a disk
on the end of each shaft and an intermediate disk having two
mutually vertical feathers on opposite sides that engage slots in
the respective shaft disks. It is utilized to join two parallel shafts
whose axes are at a small distance apart. Two flanges, each
having a rectangular slot, are keyed, one on each shaft. The two
flanges are positioned such that, the slot in one is at a right angle
to the slot in the other. To create the coupling, a circular disc with
two rectangular projections on either side and at a right angle to
each other is positioned between the two flanges. During motion,
the central disc, while turning, slides in the slots of the flanges.
Power transmission takes place between the shafts, because of
the positive link between the flanges and the central disc.

Micro-Project Report

"OLDHAMS COUPLING"

1. Brief Introduction/ Rationale

-7-
It is used to connect two parallel shafts whose axes are at a small distance
apart. Two flanges, each having a rectangular slot, are keyed, one on each
shaft. The two flanges are positioned such that, the slot in one is at right angle
to the slot in the other. To make the coupling, a circular disc with two
rectangular projections on either side and at right angle to each other, is
placed between the two flanges. During motion, the central disc, while
turning, slides in the slots of the flanges. Power transmission takes place
between the shafts, because of the positive connection between the flanges
and the central disc.

❖ Why we need coupling?

Power can be transmitted by means of various gear arrangements or drives

only if the shafts are parallel.Couplings are used when the shafts are in a
straight line and are to be connected end to end to transmit power

❖ What is oldham coupling?

An Oldham coupler is a method to transfer torque between two parallel but

not collinear shafts.

❖ COMPONENTS:

It has three discs, one coupled to the input, one coupled to the output, and a
middle disc that is joined to the first two by tongue and groove.

-8-
❖ Construction :

This mechanism is inversion of Double slider Crank Chain .It has two turning
& two Sliding pair.

Two flanges with respective shafts are free to rotates with respect to frame
both flanges have rectangular slots . An intermediate piece has two
rectangular projections on both sides, both projections are perpendicular to
each other , each projection fits inside the slot of flange.

-9-
❖ Links

1st link = Flange 1

2nd link = supporting Frame
3rd link = Flange 2
4th link = Intermediate flange

❖ Pairs:

supporting Frame & Flange 1 = Turning pair

supporting Frame & Flange 2 = Turning pair

Flange 1 & Intermediate Flange = Sliding pair

Flange 2 & Intermediate Flange = Sliding pair

❖ Working:
- 10 -
When one shaft is given rotary motion,it is transmitted to another shaft the
intermediate piece.

The intermediate piece slides & adjusts itself, to keep both shafts runnings.

The centre of the intermediate piece traces the path of a circle with radius
equal to offset between shafts.

❖ Maximum Sliding Speed of Tongue:

If the distance between the axis of the two shafts remains constant through
the process, then the center of the Intermediate Flange or Piece will develop
an imaginary Circle, in which the diameter of the circle is equal to the
distance between the two shafts (driver shaft and driven shaft). Therefore, the
maximum Sliding Speed of Each Tongue of Oldham Coupling in meters per
second can be taken as ω = Angular velocity of each shaft (rad/s) d =
Distance between the shaft axes (m)
Maximum sliding speed of each tongue v (m/s)=

𝑣 = 𝜔. 𝑑

❖ Advantages of Oldham Coupling:

1) It can transmit the energy between non-coaxial parallel shafts.

2) The Oldham Mechanism produces low restorative force on
the bearings of driver and driven shafts.
3) The small Oldham Couplings do even operate at high speeds.
4) The Intermediate Flange or Central Piece of Oldham Coupling is
electrical resistance.
5) The Oldham Mechanism consists low moment of inertia.
6) The rotating speed of driver and driven shaft is same.
7) The Oldham Coupling Mechanism is Economical compared to other
types of couplings.

❖ Disadvantages of Oldham Coupling:

- 11 -
1) Compared to other types of couplings, the Oldham Coupling
Mechanism develops low maximum speed, which vary around 3000
rpm.
2) Oldham Coupling Mechanism is not suitable for large angular
displacements.
3) Oldham Coupling develops low torque and stiffness.
4) The Axial Reaction at maximum torques will be taken by Bearings
instead of Coupling.

❖ Applications of Oldham Coupling:

1) Oldham Mechanism is used in Stepper motor driven positioning stage

2) Oldham Coupling Mechanism is used in Robotics and Servos.
3) Uses at Motion controller with zero reaction performance
4) Oldham Mechanism is used in damping system vibrations and
accommodating alignments.

❖ Oldham Couplings’ Attributes and Specifications

Oldham coupling specifications include the following parameters and

attributes:

- 12 -
1) Bore size or diameter – the diameter of the coupling bore that accepts
the connecting shaft. Bore sizes may be identical or different on each
side of the coupling, depending on the model.

2) Overall length – the end-to-end length of the coupling as measured

from the two end faces of the coupling.

3) Hub width – the width of the hub measured from the end face to the
internal face of the tooth that joins the slider block.
4) Hub material - the material from which the hub is constructed.

5) Slider block material – the material from which the slider block is
constructed.

6) Coupling diameter – the overall diameter of the coupling.

7) Maximum rated torque – the maximum rating of the coupling for peak
torque rating.

8) Lateral offset – also called parallel misalignment, represents the

maximum tolerable distance of shaft misalignment along the axial
dimension that can be accommodated by the coupling.

9) Angular offset – also called angular misalignment, represents the

maximum angular deviation of shaft misalignment along the radial
dimension that can be accommodated by the coupling.

10) Axial offset – represents the maximum axial deviation (also known
as axial misalignment) along the shaft axes that can be accommodated
by the coupling.

11) Shaft coupling fastening method – the means by which the coupling
attaches to the drive or driven shaft, typically clamped or via a set
screw.

❖ Uses: –

Shaft couplings are utilized in machinery for several objectives. The most
typical of which are the following.

- 13 -
1) To transmit power from one end to another end. (ex: motor transfer power
to pump via coupling) Primary function.
2) To deliver for the link of shafts of units that are manufactured individually
such as a motor and generator and to deliver for disconnection for repairs
or alterations.
3) To provide for the misalignment of the shafts or to introduce mechanical
flexibility.
4) To decrease the transmission of shock loads from one shaft to another.
5) To introduce security against overloads.
6) To alter the vibration characteristics of rotating units.
7) To connect driving and the driven part
8) slips when an overload happens

3.Outputs of the Micro-Project

In this project, we successfully did a study Oldham coupling

4.Skill Developed / Learning outcomes of this

Micro-Project
• Increase knowledge about different examples of mechanism
• Experience teamwork
• Increase communication skill
• Know about different Mechanism

5.Conclusion

The Oldham Coupling Mechanism is one of the inversions of Double Crank

Slider Chain Mechanism, which is being one of the necessary couplings in
small applications. Nowadays, robotics, servo motors, etc., are depending on
it. Transformation of sliding movement into turning movement is quite
difficult in most cases, which is further possible by only Oldham Mechanism.
