SUMMATIVE ASSESSMENT
INSTRUCTIONS FOR THE TEACHER TRAINER
1. The instructions are to enable the Art and Craft teacher trainer guide each candidate in
organizing their portfolio for this year’s DPTE Upgrade Assessment. Portfolio
assessment will account for 40 % of the summative assessment score at the end of the
course.
2. The portfolio should be prepared individually by each candidate under the supervision
of the teacher trainer and should comprise of works assembled throughout the course of
study. The work should demonstrate their growth and learning in Art and Craft,
mastery of concepts, composition and execution in the various art techniques.
3. The portfolio assessment comprises ONE portfolio for each candidate. The candidate
should choose works from different strands that have been clustered into ten categories.
4. Portfolio guidelines:
(i) Physical format: A folder or portfolio measuring 42 cm x 60 cm made from
recycled cloth, carton boards or manila paper with a tie or clasp to keep the
contents secure. Large artworks (such as sculptures, pottery, murals) should be
presented as still photographs or videos burned on CD.
(ii) Portfolio contents: The candidate assessment portfolio should include the
following:
 Table of contents
It should establish the order in which entries were produced and collected. It
should be in written form to help navigate the collection of entries.
 Work samples
Not all artworks produced in class should be included in the portfolio.
However each entry must be accompanied by evidence of preparatory work,
revisions feedback and self-reflection. This evidence may take any number of
forms, including: drafts, notes, sketches, illustrations, or photographs to
document stages of work.

5. Each candidate should select any one piece of work from each category marked A, B
and C to assemble the portfolio. This should show progression and include research
notes, all sketches, drawings/illustrations that were done before finalization of the work.

6. Portfolio Assessment: Once submitted, the portfolio will be assessed according to


specific criteria in the scoring guide provided (attached).
7. Each candidate should be provided with a copy of the Guide to Scoring the Portfolio
Submissions, pictorial illustration of the assessment expectations and scoring
rubric provided on page(s) 3, 4, 5 and 6. The candidate should read through each
descriptor carefully in order to build an authentic portfolio.
8. The teacher trainer will be required to download the scoring guide and assessment score
sheet from the teacher education portal https://cbate.knec.ac.ke and assess each
candidate’s portfolio. Carefully read through each descriptor to give further guide on
the performance level to place each candidate.
9. Score and record the performance levels in the assessment sheet provided before
uploading into the Teacher Education portal by 10th July 2022.
10. Ensure all candidates have equitable opportunity to assemble the portfolios.

Guide to Scoring the Portfolio Submissions

Each portfolio submission is scored using four separate components as follows:

1. Portfolio submissions: Candidates compliance with required submissions clustered in


categories A, B, and C. Candidates should submit only ONE artwork from each cluster.
2. Subject matter interpretation and application of design elements & principles:
Rendering and use of materials, tools and mediums; measures knowledge, aptitude and
ability to render with authenticity, and make appropriate choices regarding materials,
tools and mediums used for intended outcome/product.
3. Execution skills :The act of conveying mood, sentiment, feeling, spirit and character in
artistic execution; measures candidate’s ability to create expressive works that clearly
reflect the original point of view, this include:
(i) Mastery in handling of materials, tools, techniques
(ii) Creative design process in 2D or 3D artworks
o Research notes
o Concept development
o Sketches.
4. Presentation skills: Level of attention to the finished product and presentation of the
artwork; measures the student’s effort and ability to create artworks that demonstrate
pride of workmanship.
