I. OBJECTIVES
A. Content Standard The learner demonstrates understanding of: Southeast Asian literature
as mirror to a shared heritage; coping strategies in processing textual
information; strategies in examining features of a listening and viewing
material; structural analysis of words and propaganda techniques; and
grammatical signals for opinion- making, persuasion, and emphasis.

B. Performance Standard The learner transfers learning by composing and delivering a


persuasive speech based on an informative essay featuring use of
properly acknowledged information sources, grammatical signals for
opinion-making, persuasion, and emphasis, and appropriate prosodic
features, stance, and behavior.

C. Learning Competency/ Most Essential Learning Competency


Objectives • Determine the various social, moral, and economic issues
discussed in the text listened to. (EN8LC-III-7.4)

At the end of this lesson, the learner will be able to:


• Determine the social issue presented in the text.
• Give possible solutions on a particular social issue through
differentiated activities.

An issue is an important problem or topic that people in the society
argue about or discuss since it negatively affects many people in the
society. It could be a social, moral, or economic issue.
Social issues prevent the society from functioning at the most
desirable level. An issue becomes a social issue under the following
circumstances:
• The issue involves people in the society.
• The public, as a whole, recognizes the situation as a problem.
• A large segment of the population sees the situation as a valid
concern.
• The situation can be alleviated through the joint actions of the
citizens.

extreme. UNICEF reports that 12
million girls are married before they
reach adulthood, and 98 million high
school-aged girls do not attend
school.

5. Since 1994, the UP Population E. Poverty and


Institute (UPPI) has monitored Homelessness

only nationwide study focusing on the
age group 15-24. Between 1994 and
2002, the percentage of young
women who have ever been pregnant
hardly changed from 7.1% in 1994 to
6.9% in 2002. However, this
percentage rose dramatically from the
early 2000s to the mid-2010s, more
than doubling from 6.9% in 2002 to
14.4% in 2013, but has gone down to
7.2% in 2021.
