Experiment-3

Preliminary Work

• In the preliminary work, a simulation program will be chosen from PSIM, PSpice,
MATLAB/Simulink, LTSpice, etc., to model the circuit structures specified below.
• The following values will be used in the conducted simulations.
Source voltage: 220 𝑉𝑟𝑚𝑠
Frequency: 50 Hz
Transformer ratio: 3.7:1
Resistor value (R): Max: 192 Ω- Min:16 Ω
Inductance value (L): Max: 0,61 H- Min: 50 mH
1.
a) Specify the firing angle intervals, mentioning the reasons, for the single-phase alternating current
chopper in R, RL, and L load conditions (experiment sheet: Figure 1-3). Conduct the circuit
structure modeling for the determined firing angles. In continuous mode, obtain the following
waveforms for 2 complete periods related to the specified circuit structure. Calculate the effective
(rms) and average values for the obtained waveforms. Interpret the results by comparing them with
experimental measurements.
• Load voltage, load current, and source current
• Voltage, current, and gate signals for each thyristor.
b) Specify the output voltage range of a half-wave controlled alternating current chopper as a
percentage relative to the input voltage. Conduct simulations for a resistive load, providing all the
waveforms requested in part (a) for the same firing angle value.
c) If a Freewheeling Diode is used in a single-phase alternating current chopper circuit, what
changes will occur in the current-voltage characteristics? Model the relevant circuit and explain.
d) Draw the circuit diagram for a single-phase alternating current (AC) chopper with a thyristor
and a diode and simulate it for a specified firing angle. Compare your results with the simulation
results of a fully controlled AC chopper under the same operating conditions.
2.
a) Propose an application area for a pure inductive load (L) in a single-phase AC chopper and
explain the operating principles for this application area.
b) A single-phase universal motor is controlled using an AC chopper. Suggest a method to reduce
the harmonic content of the current drawn from the source.
