History
Six Sigma concept was introduced
in 1980 by Bill Smith while working
for MOTOROLA, since then Six
Sigma has seen WORLDWIDE
adoption.
History
• Motorola pioneered Six Sigma, setting
a "six sigma" goal for its manufacturing
business.
• It registered Six Sigma as a service mark on
JUNE 11, 1991 U.S.
• DECEMBER 28, 1993, it registered Six
Sigma as a trademark.
Bill Smith
He is the “FATHER OF SIX SIGMA”
and “CO-FOUNDER OF SIX
SIGMA”

He joined Motorola in 1987 after

working for nearly 35 years in
engineering and quality
assurance
SIX SIGMA LOGO
Six Sigma symbol is 6σ, which combines
the number 6 and the lower-case Greek
letter sigma (σ)

Sigma (σ) stands for STANDARD

DEVIATION, a statistical measure of
variation from the mean or target
SIX SIGMA
It is a set of techniques and tools for process
improvement.

It is a quality improvement methodology that

aims to reduce defects and variation in
processes by using statistical analysis and
management
SIX
SIGMA
1. DETERMINE THE MANUFACTURING 3. IMPROVE THE PROCESS
PROCESS

2. HOW TO ELLIMINATE THE DELAYS 4. FIX ISSUES ALONG THE WAY

SIX SIGMA
SIX SIGMA AIMS TO REDUCE

TIME DEFFECT VARIABILITY

1. Produce defect free product of 99.99966% of the time

Thanks to
2. Allowing 3.4 errors/Million Opportunities
SIX SIGMA
• Increases LOYALTY towards the
brand

• Improves Employee morale leading to

higher productivity
Six Sigma follow two project methodologies,
inspired by W. Edwards Deming’s Plan-Do-Study-
Act Cycle.

METHODOLOGIES
DMAIC DMADV
One of the most commonly It is used when creating new
used Methodologies in the product or services from
world scratch
It focuses in improving the It is also called DFSS

DMAIC 5 PHASES

Define Measure Analyze Improve Control

DMAIC
• DEFINE the system, the voice of the customer and their
requirements.
• MEASURE key aspects of the current process and collect
relevant data.
• ANALYZE the data to investigate and verify cause and effect.
• IMPROVE or optimize the current process based upon data
analysis using techniques such as design of experiments.
• CONTROL the future state process to ensure that any
deviations from the target are corrected before they result in

DMADV
• DEFINE design goals that are consistent with customer demands and

the enterprise strategy.

• MEASURE and identify CTQs (characteristics that are Critical To Quality.

• ANALYZE to develop and design alternatives

• DESIGN an improved alternative, best suited per analysis in the previous

step.

• VERIFY the design, set up pilot runs, implement the production process
Six sigma has also found success in a number of different industries
