Comprehension I
A bungee jumper jumps from a height h above a lake surface. The
flexible rope tied to him is designed such that he stops for the first time

for him!!!). After a long time he comes to equilibrium at a height

Part D - Subjective questions. Final answer to be written in the space provided on the
answer sheet. Marking Scheme (+8, 0)

Q15. An ancient Greek water clock called clepsydra was

used to measure time intervals. It’s basically a
bowl having a small circular orifice of radius r at H
its lowest point. The profile of the vessel used in
clepsydra was such that the free surface of the
water in it drops down at a constant speed till it r
empties itself. For a particular clepsydra of height
H the emptying time is observed to be te. Assuming Torricelli’s Law to
be valid & neglecting viscous effects find the volume of water in this
particular clepsydra.
Q16. A slender rod of natural length lo hangs from a rigid ceiling and has
its density as ρ = ρo(x/lo) where x is the distance on the rod measured
from the ceiling. If it is left to itself in equilibrium then, the total
elongation in the rod given that its Young’s modulus is Y can be
o glox
expressed as where x and y are integers. Find the value of xy
yY

Q17. A wooden log having a square cross- d Fo
section of side length d is floating in the
vertical position as shown in the figure lo l
(position 1). Find the minimum work
done to bring it in the position 2, where it ρo
is observed that a force Fo has to be kept 1 2
applied, at the right corner as shown, to keep it just fully submerged
in water. Density of water is given to be ρo.
Q18. A light thin highly elastic strip of relaxed length lo is fixed to a wall at
one end. Suppose you start pulling the other end with a constant
horizontal velocity vo away from the wall. At the same time an ant
starts crawling on the strip, towards the wall, from the end you are
holding. It always travels with a constant speed uo relative to the
strip’s surface. What is the time taken by the ant to reach the wall?
Assume that the strip always obeys Hooke’s Law.
Q19. A container of mass m and base area as 10A Q
has a small outlet tube of area A, at the bottom
side as shown in the figure. The friction
coefficient between the container and the m
horizontal surface is = 0.1. The level in the
container is maintained by certain input value m
of Q (volume flow rate of a liquid of density
ρ). The value of this Q, required to keep the container just stationary,
2 kmgA
can be expressed as Q = where k is some dimensionless constant.

The difference between the maximum & the minimum value of k can
be shown to be a/b where a and b are integers. Find (a - b).
Q20. A pump can push a viscous oil through a l
long straight pipe of length l with the
flow rate of Q1. Now a part of the middle
section of the pipe is replaced by a ring-
R
shaped section of mean radius R having
the same internal cross-section as that of
the pipe. If the same pump is used to
push oil through this modified pipe then what will be the flow rate.
