Bangladesh is the only country in the

world that has sacrificed their lives and run
movement in her mother tongue. On 14
August 1947, Pakistan gained
independence. Immediately after
independence, the government of Pakistan
took the initiative to make the language of
Urdu as a state language. In 1947, a
resolution was adopted to make Urdu the
state language of Pakistan. But at that
time most of the people of Pakistan
expressed their feelings in Bangla
language. In the same context, on March
11, 1948, the first movement was
demonstrated in East Bengal demanding
Bangla language. Sheikh Mujib was
arrested on this issue. On March 21, 1948,
the governor of Pakistan declared Urdu as
Pakistan’s only state language. On
February 20, 1952, the condition of
Section 144 was declared in whole Dhaka.

Mother Language Day. Every nation has
remarkable achievements that they can
take pride in it. Our language day is our

the Bangla speaking majority people. The
ruling authority imposed section 144 all
over the country as the protest grew
powerful. However, when students
politicians and general masses brought
out a procession in Dhaka University area
defying section 144, the police imposed
fire on the parade. As a result, Rafiq,
Jabbar, Salam, Barkat, Shafiq met
martyrdom. Finally, Bangla recognized as
the state language.

On 17 November 1999, UNESCO declared

that UNESCO would observe the day
internationally. Through UNESCO
recognition, our language day got
international status. Since 1952, the 21st
of February is obeyed as the language day
in our nation. We memorialize our martyrs.

International Mother
Language Day
Paragraph for SSC
International Mother Language Day is
observed annually on February 21st to
promote linguistic and cultural diversity
around the world. This day serves as a
reminder of the importance of preserving
and celebrating one’s mother tongue,
which is a fundamental aspect of identity
and heritage. The celebration originated
from the tragic events of February 21,
1952, in Bangladesh (then East Pakistan),
where students protesting for the
recognition of Bengali as one of the
national languages were brutally killed by
the police. This day not only
commemorates their sacrifice but also
emphasizes the significance of linguistic
rights and the need to safeguard
languages from extinction. It encourages
multilingualism and fosters mutual respect
among different language communities,
contributing to the promotion of peace
and understanding globally. Through
