Name: ______________________________ Score: / 20

Teacher: Date: Time:

Purpose of Assessment: Assessment of Learning

Method of Assessment: KTCA

Learning Goals:

● Students know how to identify over which intervals functions are increasing and
decreasing using derivatives.

Overall Expectations

● B. DERIVATIVES AND THEIR APPLICATIONS

● 1. make connections, graphically and algebraically, between the key features of a
function and its first and second derivatives, and use the connections in curve
sketching;
● 2. solve problems, including optimization problems, that require the use of the
concepts and procedures associated with the derivative, including problems
arising from real-world applications and involving the development of
mathematical models.

Specific Expectations

● B 1. Connecting Graphs and Equations of Functions and Their Derivatives

● B 1.1 sketch the graph of a derivative function, given the graph of a function that
is continuous over an interval, and recognize points of inflection of the given
function
● B 1.2 recognize the second derivative as the rate of change of the rate of change,
and sketch the graphs of the first and second derivatives, given the graph of a
smooth function
● B 1.3 determine algebraically the equation of the second derivative f”(x) of a
polynomial or simple rational function f(x), and make connections, through
investigation using technology, between the key features of the graph of the
function and corresponding features of the graphs of its first and second
derivatives
● B 1.4 describe key features of a polynomial function, given information about its
first and/or second derivatives, sketch two or more possible graphs of the function
that are consistent with the given information, and explain why an infinite number
of graphs is possible
● B 1.5 sketch the graph of a polynomial function, given its equation, by using a
variety of strategies to determine its key features, and verify using technology
● B 2. Solving Problems Using Mathematical Models and Derivatives
● B 2.1 makes connections between the concept of motion and the concept of the
derivative in a variety of ways.
● B 2.2 make connections between the graphical or algebraic representations of
derivatives and real-world applications
● B 2.3 solve problems, using the derivative, that involve instantaneous rates of
change, including problems arising from real-world applications, given the
equation of a function

Knowledge 5

Suppose that f is a differentiable function with the derivative f’(x) = (x - 1)(x + 2)(x + 3).
Determine the values of x for which the function f is increasing and the values of x for
which the function is decreasing.

Marking Scheme (5 marks)

• 2 marks for correctly finding the increase and decrease intervals

• 3 marks for correctly applying relevant knowledge
Thinking 5

Use the derivative to show that the graph of the quadratic function f(x) = ax2 + bx + c,
𝑏 𝑏
a > 0, is decreasing on the interval x < -2𝑎 and increasing on the interval x > -2𝑎.

Marking Scheme (5 marks)

• 2 marks for correctly finding the increase and decrease intervals

• 3 marks for correctly applying relevant knowledge
Communication 5

Sketch a graph of a function f that is differentiable and that satisfies the following
conditions:
i. f’(x) > 0, when x < -5
ii. f’(x) < 0, when -5 < x < 1 and when x > 1
iii. f’(-5) = 0 and f’(1) = 0
iv. f(-5) = 6 and f(1) = 2

Marking Scheme (5 marks)

• 5 marks for correctly drawing the graph

Application 5

For f(t) = x4 - 32x + 4, use algebraic methods to find where f’(x) = 0, the intervals on
which the function increases and decreases, and all the local extrema. Use graphing
technology to verify your results.

Marking Scheme (5 marks)

• 4 marks for correctly obtaining the answers using algebraic methods with steps
• 1 mark for correct graph with key points
