Revolution

Revolution via battery technology

• Italy has given two major things to the world

1.) PIZZA 2.) BATTERY

1.)Italian physicist Alessandro Volta built and described the first electrochemical battery, the voltaic pile,
in 1800

2.)It's been 2 centuries now we are having vast use of this technology in our
Day to day life.

3.)Battery is a series of cells & a smallest unit within a battery

that generates and stores electrical energy through chemical reactions is called cell.
1.)Battery is a device which stores electrical energy in the form of chemical energy and
provides it to the user in the form of electrical energy

2.)Battery Types :- (a)Primary and (b) Secondary

*Primary Battery – One time use only

ex– AA,AAA BATTERIES

* Secondary battery – It can be used multiple times

ex- Li-ion , Ni-Cd , Lead acid
Evolution
Demand of Battery
India's battery market is estimated to be at USD 16.77 billion by the end of this year and is
projected to reach USD 27.70 billion in the next five years
Revolution in communication sector via battery
• Then telephones scoop up their power from the phone line, batteries, or a plug-in adapter
• first handheld mobile phone was demonstrated by Motorola in New York City in 1973 which weights 2 kg which
works on nickel-cadmium battery
• A few years later, batteries ran on nickel metal hydride. It was thinner, lighter, nontoxic, and had higher energy
density. It took less time to charge and had more capacity. It still had the memory effect, but it wasn’t as
significant as Ni-Cd.
• Finally came the lithium-ion batteries which is used in latest smartphones and computers . It was thinner, lighter,
had even more energy density than NiMH batteries, and didn’t have the memory effect
• Same way in computers battery revolution take place from computers
to laptop
• first computers need a continues power to work and operate its function in 1900 supply then ups is
invented which is like a portable power bank which provides emergency power. A UPS protects data
centres and industrial equipment from power outages by managing IT infrastructure and computer
systems. which is made up of Nickel-Cadmium, Lead-Acid.

• Revolution in Transportation sector via Battery
• Electric vehicles - BATTERY HAS PROMINENT USE IN ELECTRIC VEHICLES AS IT IS INTEGRAL
COMPONENT OF ELECTRIC VEHICLES. BATTERY ACTS LIKE A HEART OF ELECTRIC VEHICLES. THEY CAN'T RUN
WITHOUT A BATTERY.
• VARIOUS TYPES OF BATTERIES WHICH ARE AVAILABLE IN THE MARKET BUT MOST OF THE CAR COMPANIES
PREFERED TO USE LITHIUM-ION BATTERIES BECAUSE THEY ARE LIGHTER IN WEIGHT AND THEY ALSO CAN
EHNANCE THE PERFORMANCE OF VEHICLE.
• Market share
• The Indian EV market was valued at $3.21 billion in 2022 and is expected to grow to $113.99 billion by
2029 at a compound annual growth rate of 66.52 per cent.
• Tata Motors (72 percent), followed by MG Motors (10 percent) and Mahindra (9 percent),
The Top five EV battery manufacturers by market share
• CATL is the leading brand in EV battery manufacturing, securing 34% of the market share.
Based in China, CATL manufacturers solid-state batteries and lithium-ion batteries for
companies including BMW, Toyota, and Honda. CATL also supplies Tesla with EV
batteries for its Shanghai-based assembly line
• The South Korean firm LG Energy Solution has a 14% market share .
• Chinese enterprise BYD has 12% market share .
• Japanese giant Panasonic is one of the leading brands on the planet.
• Based in South Korea, SK Innovation has 7 % market share.
• Risks / Disadvantages
• Damaged or unstable batteries and improper charging, storage or disposal can cause the batteries to
overheat, leading to an explosive, aggressive fire that spreads rapidly, can reignite and is challenging
to extinguish.

• Lithium-ion battery fires are very dangerous. Water may not prevent a battery from burning and
spreading.
• Fire Extinguishers do not work on lithium-ion batteries fires
• Lithium batteries have chemicals within them such as; manganese, cobalt, and nickel which are harmful
to the environment when not properly handled and such batteries are non-biodegradble.
