Triangular notch

It consists of a rectangular plate with triangular opening as shown in the fig. below.

𝐷𝑒𝑝𝑡ℎ 𝑜𝑓 𝑙𝑖𝑞𝑢𝑖𝑑 = 𝐻

The velocity at point depends on the height of the liquid above it. The velocity is given by,
𝑣 = √2𝑔ℎ
Let us take small strip of height dh at a depth of h from the free surface of the liquid level.

𝐻−ℎ
𝑎𝑟𝑒𝑎 𝑜𝑓 𝑡ℎ𝑒 𝑠𝑡𝑟𝑖𝑝 𝑑𝑆 = 2𝑤 𝑑ℎ = 2(𝐻 − ℎ)𝑡𝑎𝑛 (𝜃/2)𝑑ℎ

Elemental volumetric flow rate through this strip is given by,

𝑑𝑄 = √2𝑔ℎ × 2(𝐻 − ℎ)𝑡𝑎𝑛 (𝜃/2)𝑑ℎ
𝑑𝑄 = 𝐾(𝐻 − ℎ)√ℎ 𝑑ℎ, 𝑤ℎ𝑒𝑟𝑒 𝐾 = 2 𝑡𝑎𝑛 (𝜃/2)√2𝑔

This is called theoretical discharge. Actual discharge is given by,

This can also be written as,
𝑄𝑎𝑐𝑡𝑢𝑎𝑙 = 𝑚𝐻 𝑛 , 𝑚 𝑎𝑛𝑑 𝑛 𝑎𝑟𝑒 𝑐𝑎𝑙𝑙𝑒𝑑 𝑛𝑜𝑡𝑐ℎ 𝑐𝑜𝑛𝑠𝑡𝑎𝑛𝑡𝑠.
