Dhruva was the son of King Uttanapada. The king had two wives: Suruchi and Suniti.
Suruchi had a son named Uttama and Suniti had a son named Dhruva. Suruchi was the king's
favorite queen. Whilst the king loved her and her son Uttama, he ignored Suniti and her son.
Once Uttama sat in his father's lap. Dhruva too tried to sit beside his stepbrother. At this
Suruchi insulted him. Dhruva came crying to his mother, Suniti, who comforted him. She told
Dhruva decided to go to the forest and meditate on the Lord. On the way he met Devarishi
Narada. The rishi describes Lord Narayana’s appearance and asks Dhruva to mediate chanting:
baadara and kapithaa fruit once every 3 nights. Next, every 6 days, he would eat grass. Then, he
drank water every 9th day in 3rd month. He consumed only air (Vaayubakshah) in 4th month.
He meditated on 1 leg in the 5th month. Lord Narayana appeared on Garuda Vaahana. Dhruva
heard vedic sounds and sees the Lord and is speechless. Lord Narayana places his divine conch
on Dhruva’s cheeks. He is blessed to become ruler of the world and is also given a permanent
place higher than the celestials to be reached on his death. Dhruva stuti is sung (it has 12
stanzas). Even today, we know him as the Dhruva star, the northern (pole) star.
Nava Vidha Bhakti: Dhruva practiced SMARANAM, always remembering the Lord.
