PROJECT MANAGER

ATLANTIC FOREST RESEARCH AND CONSERVATION ALLIANCE (ARAÇÁ)

Background. We are seeking a project manager to help develop

and implement plans for a new initiative: the Atlantic rainforest
Research And Conservation Alliance (ARAÇÁ). This is a non-
profit project with a mission ‘to understand and protect Brazil’s
Atlantic Rainforest through world-class research, conservation
and training.’ Its primary goal is to foster research excellence,
innovative training and tangible conservation outcomes in this
diverse and threatened ecosystem. It is centred around a beautiful private reserve called Sítio
Bacchus in the municipality of Nova Friburgo (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil), privately purchased by
Brazilian scientist Alexandre Antonelli and his wife Anna Antonelli. The site and project will
be managed by a new foundation being set up in Sweden – the Antonelli Foundation for
Biodiversity Research and Conservation – and a sister entity in Brazil. A generous
philanthropic donation has been pledged which will enable further development of the
Bacchus site and provide core support for the next 10 years.

Job tasks. We expect you to be working flexibly and pro-actively on manifold aspects of the
project, including but not restricted to: supporting the set-up of the Brazilian foundation (with
further legal advisors); organising foundation meetings; supporting the development of
infrastructure at Bacchus; purchasing equipment and other items; receiving researchers,
students and other visitors; supporting the development of partnerships; developing
management plans, budgets, reports, tax declarations, and other documents; overseeing
health and safety conditions; liaising with relevant individuals for preparation of research
permits; coordinating cleaning and reparations; among other tasks, depending on needs and
how plans develop.

Terms and conditions. The initial ‘trial’ contract is for six months at 50% full-time equivalent
(i.e., c. 20 hours per week), but there is funding and need for multiple years; further
subcontracting or employment will be considered depending on performance and mutual
interest, and could increase to full time. Until a Brazilian foundation is set up, you will need
to invoice us directly. We encourage you to be based at, or in the vicinity of, Sítio Bacchus.
Accommodation and access to a 4x4 vehicle will be provided free of charge during the
duration of the contract. Salary/fee: to be agreed based on the applicant’s qualifications.
Working language: English. Start date: as soon as possible upon agreement. Application
deadline: applications will be reviewed as they arrive, and suitable candidates will be invited
for virtual interviews. No decision will be made before January 15, 2023. How to apply: please
send your full CV + a cover letter as a single pdf file; the letter (max 2 pages) should state your
interest in the position, how you meet the required qualifications and any additional merits,
what excites you about this project and how you would like to influence its development.

Required qualifications: a problem-solving, positive and collaborative attitude; excellent

communication skills in English and at least good Portuguese; the ability to work effectively
both individually and in group; a proven record of successful project management; a broad
understanding of, and personal alignment with, the project’s overall goals and vision.
Additional merits: experience in setting up and/or running non-profit organisations or
projects of similar scope; a MSc, PhD, or experience with supporting or carrying out scientific
research, conservation and/or training; some knowledge of the region and local stakeholders.
