VOLLEYBALL TERMINOLOGIES

 Serve
o Starts each rally, with a player hitting the ball over the net to the
opponent’s side
 Pass or Bump
o A basic skill where a player uses the forearms to control and direct
the ball to a teammate
 Set
o A tactical skill where a player uses finger action to push the ball into
the air so that a teammate can spike it
 Spike or Attack
o A powerful overhead hit into the opponent’s court, typically
executed by the front-row players
 Block
o The defensive action at the net, where players attempt to intercept
the ball during the opponent’s attack
 Dig
o A defensive move where a player passes the attacked ball close to
the floor to keep it in play
 Rotation
o The clockwise movement of players around the court after winning
a rally and earning the right to serve

VOLLEYBALL HISTORY
 A popular and diverse sport with many variations, including indoor,
outdoor and beach volleyball
 The game is consists of two; three; or six players each team; mixed six
games to 11 points to 15 points or by the clock; and the rally-point
system
OBJECTIVE OF THE GAME
 To score points by sending the ball over the net and into the opponent’s
court in a way that it cannot be returned. The team has three hits for
returning the ball (in addition to the block contact)
 To score more points than the other team by hitting the ball over the net
so the opponents cannot return the ball

 Who invented Volleyball?
 Where did Volleyball originate?
o Volleyball was invented in 1895 by William G. Morgan, a YMCA
instructor in Holyoke, Massachusetts, USA.
o He combined elements of basketball, tennis, and handball to create
a new game that could be played indoors and was less physically
demanding, less violent
o Originally called “Mintonette”, the game underwent several
changes and evolved into volleyball
o The first official game of volleyball was played at the International
YMCA Traning School in 1896
o The first official rules were established in 1897, and the first
international competition took place in 1913
o Volleyball was introduced to the Olympic Games in 1946 (for men)
and 1964 (for women)
o Beach volleyball was added later, making its Olympic debut in 1996
