Objectives

 Explain what disaster is;


 Analyze the effects of disaster in human/society
and in the environment;and,
 Give some tips to avoid/lessen the impact of
disaster.
DISASTER
 Disaster is a sudden, calamitous event bringing great
damage, loss and destruction and devastation to life
and property.
 The damage caused by disasters is immeasurable and
varies with the geographical location, climate and the
type of the earth surface / degree of vulnerability.
 This influences the mental, socio-economic, political
and cultural state of the affected area.
 Some of the examples of disasters are
earthquake,flood,landslides,wildfire,
typhoon,oil spill,volcanic eruptions and many more.
Classification of Disaster

 Natural Disaster – caused by natural forces


 Man-made Disaster – caused by human, non-intentional
human action

Ways on how to plan ahead of a
disaster

 Check for hazards at home.


 Identify safe place indoors and outdoor of your
house.
 Make sure that all of the family members are
aware of the risk that disasters may bring.
 Have disaster kits/ supplies on hand.
 Help your community get ready.
