The method statement for River Crossing Civil work

-SCOPE
This Method Statement applies to all the civil works - Including ground preparation, Lean
concreting, Encasement concreting, Curing, waterproofing, - as per project requirements.

Work Method

Lean: We will adopt a lean approach to our concrete pouring process for maximum efficiency and
quality assurance. Specifically, we will use 1500psi concrete as specified in the drawing. To ensure
precise placement and minimize the risk of segregation, our trusted supplier, TM, will transport the
concrete to the site. The delivery will be facilitated through steel shoots, avoiding the traditional
method of dropping concrete from the top.

To further streamline the process, we will divide the pouring into three manageable portions. Each
portion will involve laying approximately 43 meters of concrete. This segmented approach allows
for better control over the pouring process, ensuring uniformity and adherence to project
specifications.

By implementing these lean practices, we aim to optimize resource utilization, minimize waste, and
deliver superior results within the designated time frame.

Encasement:For the encasement process, we will adhere to the specifications outlined in the
drawing. Specifically, we will utilize 3000psi class-C concrete to ensure structural integrity and
durability. To contain the concrete within precise limits, we will employ steel formwork, providing
a secure framework for the pouring process.

To optimize efficiency and maintain quality, we will divide the encasement into three manageable
segments. Each segment will be carefully executed to ensure uniformity and adherence to project
standards. Upon reaching the endpoint of each segment, we will employ fair-faced shuttering to
achieve a smooth and aesthetically pleasing finish.
Any alternative approaches will be thoroughly discussed and evaluated before implementation.

To facilitate the pouring process, we will utilize a concrete pump. This advanced equipment will
ensure precise placement of the concrete, minimizing waste and enhancing productivity.

Additionally, we will lay the HDPE pipe for conduiting simultaneously during the concrete pouring
process. This integrated approach ensures seamless installation while minimizing disruptions to the
construction schedule.

Waterproofing Proposal:

While it is not explicitly mentioned in the drawing, we propose the use of bitumen coating for
waterproofing as an additional measure to enhance the longevity and durability of the structure.
Bitumen coating is a proven method for providing effective waterproofing protection to various
types of surfaces, including concrete and metal.

If the client instructs and is willing to cover the associated costs, we are fully prepared to
incorporate bitumen coating into the project. Our team will ensure that the application is carried out,
following industry best practices and manufacturer guidelines to achieve optimal results.

Back Filling: For the back filling process, we will adhere to the specifications outlined in the
drawing, utilizing granular filling material as specified.

To ensure safety and prevent accidental damage to the encasement, we will paste warning tape on
the encasement floor before commencing back filling.

Gabion Mattress: To protect the pipe and encasement from river water as specified in the drawing,
we will utilize gabion mattresses. These mattresses, measuring 1 meter by 1 meter, will be
constructed using galvanized iron (G.I) wire with dimensions of 60mm by 80mm. The mattresses
will be filled with stones, ensuring that the stone filling does not exceed a maximum size of 250mm.

The installation process will involve carefully placing the gabion mattresses in the designated areas
to create a protective barrier around the pipe and encasement. The mattresses will be securely
fastened together to form a continuous structure, effectively shielding the infrastructure from the
erosive forces of the river water.
Stone Pitching Procedure: To reinforce the stability of our pipe on the riverbed, we will
implement stone pitching. This process involves strategically placing stones along the riverbed to
create a protective layer securing it in place against the erosive forces of the water.

The stone pitching will be conducted meticulously, ensuring that the stones are arranged in a
manner that provides optimal support and stability to the pipe. By creating a robust barrier of stones,
we aim to prevent any displacement or damage to the pipe caused by the movement of water and
sediment in the river.

Our team will carefully select and position the stones, taking into consideration factors such as size,
shape, and arrangement to maximize effectiveness. Additionally, we will ensure that the pitching
extends sufficiently around the pipe to provide comprehensive protection against riverbed erosion.

Materials

Form Work:
Fairface steel form work will be used.
Supports and scaffolding will be G I pipes, or round timber. All surfaces of formwork will
be finished smooth and mortar tight.
The dimensions & position of formwork will be carefully checked after erection.
Oil or grease will be used to avoid adhesion of mortar and to achieve a smooth surface.
Before placing concrete all dirt, wood chips, hardened concrete or mortar and all other foreign
matter will be removed from the forms.
Well qualified foremans will be appointed for fixing on formworks & reinforcement work.

Vibrating of concrete:
Mechanical vibrators will be used for compaction. For this stand by units will available in the site
during the period of compacting. All operators handling vibrators will be trained in their operation
properly.
Curing:
Continuous curing will be carried out in a moist atmosphere for a minimum period of 07 days and
for a further period required by engineer.
Concrete area will be kept covered with hessian clothes or Polyethylene sheets which will be kept
moist throughout the curing period.
ROLES & RESPONSIBILITY

The primary responsibility of carrying out all the activities mentioned in this procedure rests with
the site- in-charge unless mentioned otherwise.
Project Leader:
Overall execution and administration of the project as per contract requirements, specifications
and the for preparation and updating of PQP. Directly control the Site Engineers and Supervisors.

Site Engineer:
Assess manpower, equipment or other resources required to ensure timely completion of the
project. Monitor availability of all materials as per schedule. Inform the Project Leader for any
non-availability of materials to take proper action. Carry out receiving inspection in coordination
with the QA/QC Engineer. Ensure that the drawings and documents are up to date and the latest
drawing is available and is being utilized in the project site works. Filled-up the check-sheet and
submit the necessary IR to the QA/QC function when the work is ready for inspection.

QA/QC Engineer: Responsible for the monitoring and implementing of quality related matters
and ensure the works are being executed with the approved Project Quality Plan and requirements
of the Contract Documents

Safety Officer: Responsible for monitoring and implementation of safety related matters such as
work permits, First Aid, PPE, approval of diversions, follow the safety and traffic regulations by
all the workmen during the construction, according to the approved project HSE plan. First Aid
boxes are readily available with HSE officer and other two numbers at site personnel’s vehicles for
site requirements.

Supervisor/Foreman:
Plan and obtain required manpower and resources in coordination with the Site Engineer. Carry out
all activities as per the planned schedule to achieve target dates. Coordinate with respective
disciplines of work and liaise with the site engineer for day to day activities. Inform Discipline
Engineer regarding site inspections when it is ready. Ensure pre task briefing is to be conducted
prior to start of work at each session.
