1. INTRODUCTION

a) The purpose of this specification is to detail the naming conventions

used to generate variable tag names for use within the SPC SCADA
system. The SPC SCADA is the Monitoring and Remote Control System
for pumping stations within Abu Dhabi.

2. SCOPE

a) The variable tag definitions detailed in this document have been

previously used by Citect and all Isagraf programs. In order for future
SCADA and RTU tag numbering to be consistent, this numbering system
will be used on all future works.

3. VARIABLE DEFINITIONS

3.1 CITECT VARIABLES

a) Variables are the most basic unit of information within a Citect system.
Every I/O device point monitored by the Citect run-time system must
have a variable tag defined for that point within Citect. Each I/O device
point is a memory location within an I/O device, and Citect exchanges
information with I/O devices by reading and writing variables.

b) Each I/O device point has a unique register address and the variable tag
definition within Citect is a label used to reference this register address.
The variable tag name should be a meaningful description of the point
being monitored. Citect variables are defined via the ‘Variable Tags’
form, accessible from the Citect Project Editor Development
environment.

c) Variable tags are used for performing the following tasks within Citect:

i. For displaying objects on a graphics page.

ii. For storing data for trending and analysis.
iii. For monitoring alarms.
iv. For controlling equipment and processes.

d) It should be noted that the variable tags are used during system
configuration. In the runtime system, the variable tag name is not
actually displayed, so the tag naming and structure is of no concern to a
normal operator. Users with higher privileges are able to determine
variable tag names at runtime to allow system debugging, if required.

3.2 ISAGRAF VARIABLES

a) Variables within Isagraf are used to reference register locations within

the memory of the I/O device that is running the Isagraf application. The
Isagraf application manipulates those registers based on conditions
defined within the application code.

b) Variables must be defined before their respective register locations can

be referenced within the application code. Once again, the variable tag
names should be a meaningful description of the point being
manipulated. Isagraf variables are defined via the Isagraf Dictionary
Editor accessible from within the Isagraf Programs Development
environment.

3.3 FUNCTION SYMBOL SCHEDULE

a) The variable tag naming conventions shall follow the same conventions
used for the site electrical drawings, which are based on the following
Function Symbol Schedule.

b) The Function Symbol Schedule is used to generate tags for physical

connections shown on the electrical drawings, and shall be the basis for
the tags for Citect and Isagraf and covers physical I/O, and extra
characters will be added to the physical tags to handle points derived
from the physical I/O.
