TASK DESCRIPTION: what interactions occur between colliding objects??

Students will undertake a depth study which focuses upon the processes involved in momentum and
kinetic energy of an object undergoing a collision. Students will spend class time researching processing
and analysing a range of primary and secondary sources of information cumulating in an ALARM matrix,
evaluation report and communication piece.

ASSESSMENT CRITERIA:
Part A- During class students will process and analyse primary and secondary information, for the
components of motion during an elastic or inelastic collision. Class work will culminate in the completion
of an ALARM matrix (5 marks) designed to assist students in completion of a report evaluating current
technologies available as safety features for reducing momentum, impulse, force and kinetic energy
during a vehicular collision. (10 marks)

Part B- (15 marks) Students are to theoretically construct a diagrammatic model depicting an apparatus
that would protect an egg should it be dropped from a height of 5m onto a concrete target. The
diagrammatic model is to be accompanied by a report which will communicate the following aspects of
the student’s design;

➢ An analysis of the forces involved in this collision event.

➢ Describes a range of structural features designed to protect the egg.

➢ An explanation of the design relating to Newton’s Laws of Motion, the law of conservation of
momentum and the law of conservation of energy.
