SEMI-DETAILED LESSON PLAN

(Mathematics 9)
Content Standard: The learner demonstrates understanding of key concepts of quadratic
equations, inequalities and functions, and rational algebraic equations
Performance Standard: The learner is able to investigate thoroughly mathematical
relationships in various situations, formulate real - life problems involving quadratic equations,
inequalities and functions, and rational algebraic equations and solve them using a variety of
strategies.
Most Essential Learning Competencies: The learner describes the relationship between the
coefficients and the roots of a quadratic equation. M9AL - Ic – 2

I. OBJECTIVES
At the end of the lesson, the students should be able to:
1. Find the coeffecients of in a given quadratic equation.
2. Determine the Sum and Product of the Roots of Quadratic Equations using the
coeffecients .
3. Demonstrates self-confidence in evaluating the sum and product of roots of
quadratic equations.

II. CONTENT

III. PROCEDURE
Preliminaries: Opening Prayer, Greetings, Checking of Attendance, Reminder about
Classroom Rules, Review, Motivational Activity (“4 Pics, 1 Word” Game)

A. ACTIVITY
Refer to the two quadratic equations below. Use the concepts learned in the previous
module to fill in the blanks with the correct answer. Then, answer the question at the
end.

B. ANALYSIS
1. What do you observe about the sum and product of the roots in relation to the
values of a, b, and c.
2. How are the coeffecient of the terms of quadratic equation related to the roots
of quadratic equation.
C. ABSTRACTION
Given the quadratic equation of the form where are real numbers and
, the following are the relations regarding its roots , 𝑛𝑑 and its coefficients.
(a) The sum of the roots is the additive inverse of the quotient of the coefficients and
denoted by:

(b) The product of the roots is the quotient of the coefficients and denoted by:

Example 1: Find the sum and the product of the roots of – . The values of a,
b, and c in the equation are 2, 8, and -10, respectively.
Sum of the roots →
The sum of the roots of – is .
Product of the roots →
The product of the roots of – is .
Example 2: Use the values of a, b, and c in finding the roots of the quadratic equation
– The values of a, b, and c in the equation are 1, 7, and -18, respectively. Use
these values to find the sum and the product of the roots of the equation.
Sum of the roots →
The sum of the roots of – is .
Product of the roots →
The product of the roots of – is .
Example 3: Without solving for the solutions of the quadratic equation , find
the sum and product of its roots. Solution: Given the equation 0, we have =
4, = 2 and = −5.
Sum of the roots →
The sum of the roots of 0 is .
Product of the roots →
The product of the roots of 0 is .
Was it easy for you to determine the sum and the product of the roots of quadratic equations?
How do the sum and product of roots of quadratic equations facilitate understanding the
required conditions of real-life situations?”

D. APPLICATION (Group Activity)

“DECODE, WHO IS HE?”
Guess the famous mathematician hiding behind these numbers. Find the sum and product of
the roots of each of the following equations. Match your letter in the box that corresponds to
each expresssion to get the name of the mathematician.
“He was a French Mathematician, lawyer, and consultant to Kings Henry III and IV of
France. He made some significant developments in Algebra. He wrote some books
about geometry and trigonometry. He calculated 𝜋 to decimal places using a polygon
with 393 216 sides. He discovered the Viète's formula which is the connection
between the roots and coefficients of polynomial”
