GENERAL PHYSICS 2 WW 4

A. Identify whether each of the following statements is true or false.

1. Kinetic energy refers to the stored energy of an object at rest.

2. In a uniform electric field, the electric field lines are spaced at varying distances from each other.

3. Electric force is not an example of a conservative force.

4. The value of k, or Coulomb’s constant is 90 ✕ 10 9 Nm2 /C.

5. The standard unit for electric potential energy is the joule.

6. Electric potential energy is the energy needed to move a charge against the electric field.

7. The work done by the electric field is determined by the product of the force magnitude and the displacement
component.

8. The work done by the electric force to move an electric charge is expressed in terms of chemical energy.

9. When the electric force is in a similar direction with the net displacement of the charge, the work is considered
negative.

10. The equation KA – UA = KB – UB is also known as the Law of the Conservation of Mechanical Energy.

B. Sample problems in Electric Potential Energy

1. Suppose you have a 12.0 V motorcycle battery that can move 10000 c of charge. How much energy does it
deliver?

ɅPE=qɅV
ɅPE=Potential energy
q=charge given
V=Voltage

Given: q=10000C
ɅV=12.0V
ɅPE= (10000C) (12.0V)
V= J/C
ɅPE=(10000C) (12.0 J/C)
ɅPE= 120000 J or 120 KJ
2. In nuclear fision, a nucleus splits roughly in half (charged drops). What is the potential 2.00 x 10⁻⁴m from a
fragment that has 46 protons in it?

The formula to find the voltage is given as follows:

V=KQ/r

Where k is a constant equal to 9 x 10⁹N-m2/c2.

Q = point charge
R = distance from a point charge

Given:
K = 9 x 10⁹ N-m2/c2.
Q = 46 x 1.6 x 10⁻19 = 7.36 x 10 ⁻18
R = 2.00 X 10⁻14m
V= (9x10⁹) (7.36 x 10⁻18)/2.00 x 10⁻14
V= 3.31 MV

ANSWER THE FOLLOWING:

1. An artificial pacemaker and a defibrillator can be used to initiate the rhythm of electrical signals and it also relies
on equipotential surfaces. Suppose the heart has 2 cm distance between its chambers, what is the electric
potential produced when the defibrillator outputs a 3 nC charge?
Use this equation
V=KQ/r
Where k is a constant equal to 9 x 10⁹N-m2/c2.
Q = point charge
R = distance from a point charge

2. What is the voltage 1.00 cm away from the center of a 2-cm diameter conductive sphere that is inside two
parallel conductors which create equipotential lines and has a +5.00 nC static charge?

V=KQ/r
Where k is a constant equal to 9 x 10⁹N-m2/c2.
Q = point charge
R = distance from a point charge
3. Suppose you have a 12.0 V car battery that can move 80000 C of charge. How much energy does it deliver?

ɅPE=qɅV
ɅPE=Potential energy
q=charge given
V=Voltage
