(sp. gr. = 0.85), would it be stable?
2. A wood cone, 700 mm diameter and 1,000 mm high floats in water with its vertex down. If the specific gravity of
the wood is 0.60, would it be stable? Determine also its initial metacentric height.

3. A rectangular scow 9 m wide, 15 m long, and 3.6 m high has a draft in sea water of 2.4 m. Its center of gravity is
2.7 m above the bottom of the scow. Determine the following:
a. The initial metacentric height,

b. The righting or overturning moment when the scow tilts until one side is just at the point of submergence.
4. A wood-stave pipe carries water under a head of 115 m. It is bound by 20-mm Ø steel hoops having an allowable
tensile stress of 98 MPa. Calculate the required spacing of the hoops if the pipe’s inside diameter is 90 cm.

5. A steel pipe having a diameter of 0.90 m carries water under a head of 230 m of water.
a. Compute the internal pressure on the pipe.

b. Compute the required wall thickness if the allowable stress for steel pipe is 110 MPa.
c. Compute the tangential force on the steel pipe.

6. A trapezoidal concrete dam is 20m high. The upstream face is vertical and the water is flush with the top, which
is 3m wide. The coefficient of friction between the base of the dam and the foundation is 0.60. If it is required to
have a factor of safety of 3 for overturning and knowing that specific gravity of concrete is 2.40.
a. Find the required width of the base.

b. Find the factor of safety against sliding.

c. Find the pressure at the heel.

d. Find the pressure at the toe.

7. A trapezoidal concrete dam, 2 m at the top, 4 m at the bottom, and 7 m high is retaining 6 m of water at its
vertical side. If the specific weight of the concrete is 23.5 kN/m3, find the factor of safety against sliding, the
factor of safety against overturning, and the maximum and minimum pressure intensity on the base.
Assume there is no hydrostatic uplift and that the coefficient of friction between dam and foundation soil is
0.48.
8. An open rectangular tank mounted on a truck is 5 m long, 2 m wide and 2.5 m high is filled with water to a
depth of 2 m.
a. What maximum horizontal acceleration can be imposed on the tank without spilling any water?

b. Determine the accelerating force on the liquid mass.

c. If the acceleration is increased to 6 m/s2, how much water is spilled out?

9. A closed horizontal cylindrical tank 15 m in diameter and 4 m long is completely filled with gasoline (sp. gr. =
0.82) and accelerated horizontally at 3m/s2. Find the total force acting at the rear wall and at the front wall of
the tank. Find also the accelerating force on the fluid mass.
10. A closed rectangular tank 4 m long, 2 m wide, and 2 m high is filled with water to a depth of 1.8 m. If
the allowable force at the rear wall of the tank is 200 kN, how fast can it be accelerated horizontally?

11. An open tank 1.82 m square weighs 3,425 N and contains 0.91m of water. It is acted by an unbalanced force of
10,400 N parallel to a pair of sides. What is the force acting in the side with the smallest depth?

12. An open cylindrical vessel having a height equal to its diameter is half-filled with water and revolved about its
own vertical axis with a constant angular speed of 120 rpm. Find its minimum diameter so that there can be
no liquid spilled.

13. An open cylindrical vessel 1.2 m in diameter and 2.1 m high is 2/3 full of water. Compute the amount of water
in liters that will be spilled out is the vessel is rotated about its vertical axis at a constant angular speed of 90-
rpm.

14. An open cylindrical tank, 2 m in diameter and 4 m high contains water to a depth of 3 m. It is rotated about
its own vertical axis with a constant angular speed ω.
a. If ω = 3 rad/sec., is there any liquid spilled?

b. What maximum value of ω (in rpm) can be imposed without spilling any liquid?

c. If ω =8 rad/s, how much water is spilled out and to what depth will the water stand when brought to rest?

d. What angular speed ω (in rpm) will just zero the depth of water at the center of the tank?
e. If ω = 100 rpm, how much area at the bottom of the tank is uncovered?
