ESR Test Procedure

Requirement

Helico Disposable ESR Pippette (westergren Method)

Specimen :

Collect 1.6 mL of whole blood and add 0.4mL of Sodium citrate 3.8%

Procedure:

1. Mix the Blood gently in tube.


2. Gently insert lower end of ESR Pipette(having the vacuum plug) into the blood
collection tube and using continuous force push the pipette down to the bottom of the
tube.
3. The blood will automatically rise into the pipette and stop at “0” mark.
4. Place the unit (Tube+ ESR Pipette) absolute vertically in ESR stand.
5. Allow the blood cells to sediment for 60 minuites.
6. At the end of 60 minuites,the numerical results are used in millimeters directly from
the imprinted scale on the pipette.

Disposal: discard the tubes, pipette as per biomedical waste procedure.

Corrected ESR= measured ESRx15/55 for hct <35%


Reticulocyte count
For Manual method
Reticulocyte = No. of reticulocytes /100 RBC
Whenever a RBC count is available, express Reticulocytes in absolute numbers.
Absolute Reticulocyte count = of Reticulocytes x Total RBC
Reticulocyte Index- When RBC count is not available, it is recommended that Reticulocyte
count be expressed as a Reticulocyte Index R.1. { R.1. = (Reticulocyte x PCV)/ 45.}
