# Detail Specification of WBM (Water Bound Macadam):

1. Material Requirements:
- Aggregate: The aggregate shall consist of clean, hard, durable, and
uncoated particles of crushed stone, gravel, or slag. The aggregate should
conform to the requirements specified in IS 383.
- Binder: The binder material shall be water. Bitumen may be used as a
binding material in certain cases as specified in the project specifications.
2. Gradation of Aggregate:
- The aggregate shall be graded from coarse to fine and shall conform to the
grading requirements specified in IS 383.
- The gradation should ensure that the voids between the aggregates are
filled properly to provide stability and durability to the pavement structure.
3. Mix Design:
- The mix design for water-bound macadam shall be based on the specified
grading requirements, traffic conditions, and environmental factors.
- The mix design should aim to achieve the desired stability, strength, and
resistance to deformation under traffic loads.
4. Construction Procedure:
- Preparation of Subgrade: The subgrade should be prepared to the specified
level and compacted to achieve the required density and stability.
- Spreading of Aggregate: The aggregate shall be spread uniformly in layers
on the prepared subgrade using mechanical spreaders.
- Compaction: Each layer of aggregate shall be compacted thoroughly using
suitable compaction equipment such as rollers or vibratory compactors.
- Application of Binder: Water shall be applied uniformly to the compacted
aggregate layers to aid in binding the particles together.
- Final Finishing: The surface of the water-bound macadam layer shall be
finished to the specified cross-sectional profile and smoothness.
5. Quality Control:
- Quality control measures shall be implemented throughout the
construction process to ensure compliance with the specified
requirements.
- Testing of materials, including aggregates and binder, shall be carried out as
per relevant Indian standards.
- Field density tests shall be conducted to verify the compaction of the water
bound macadam layers.
6. Thickness Requirements:
- The thickness of the water-bound macadam layer shall be as per the design
specifications provided in the project documents.
- The thickness may vary depending on factors such as traffic volume,
subgrade strength, and environmental conditions.
7. Surface Drainage:
- Proper surface drainage shall be provided to prevent water accumulation
on the pavement surface, which can lead to deterioration of the water-
bound macadam layer.
8. Protection and Maintenance:
- The completed water-bound macadam pavement shall be protected from
damage during subsequent construction activities.
- Regular maintenance activities such as patching, re-grading, and re-
compaction may be necessary to ensure the long-term performance of the
pavement.
9. Measurement and Payment:
- Measurement: The base course shall be measured in cubic meters (m³)
based on the compacted volume in place.
- Payment: Payment for the base course shall be made at the contract unit
price per cubic meter, which shall include all materials, labor, equipment,
and incidentals necessary to complete the work as per the specifications.
