“Plagiarism is the theft of someone else’s


ideas and work. It is the incorporation of
facts, ideas, or specific language that are not
common knowledge, are taken from another
source, and are not properly cited” (Harvard
University).

quotes in your own paper, you must learn to
cite properly!

Why do we cite?
• To identify the source of the information
• To give credit to the original author
• To build on existing knowledge
• To illustrate our arguments/thought
process
• To allow readers to find more research
What is common knowledge?
• A very well known fact

• Appears in five or more credible sources without
citation
• Widely known by peers in your field
