STATISTICS AND PROBABILITY

At the end of this module, the learners are
expected to:
• illustrate a random sampling;
• distinguish between parameter and
statistics; and
• identify sampling distribution of
statistics (sample mean).

Ms. De Jesus wants to determine
the effectiveness of the DepEd’s
“Drop Everything and Read” with
RLLMHS students through
interviews. Should she need to
conduct an interview with the
whole population? Why or why
not?

QUARTER 3 – MODULE 4
Population
It refers to the whole group under study or
investigation.

Sample
It is a subset taken from a population,
either by random sampling or by non-
random sampling.
Random Sampling & Parameter and Statistics
QUARTER 3 – MODULE 4
• It lessens the cost in doing a research
or study.
• It saves time and energy in gathering
data.

Multi-Stage Sampling
Random Sampling & Parameter and Statistics
QUARTER 3 – MODULE 4
Lottery Sampling
• It is a sampling technique in which
each member of the population has an
equal chance of being selected.
• It is also known as a fishbowl method.
• Example: The teacher used fishbowl
method in selecting 10 students to
participate in MATHINIK Conference.
Random Sampling & Parameter and Statistics
QUARTER 3 – MODULE 4
Systematic Sampling
• It is a sampling technique where the
elements of the population is listed in
a particular manner. The samples are
identified by selecting in every nth
item of the population.

Random Sampling & Parameter and Statistics

QUARTER 3 – MODULE 4
Systematic Sampling
• Example: For her Food & Beverage
project, Simone has to make her
classmates grade her dish. Since the food
is not enough for everyone, she listed the
names of her classmates alphabetically.
Using a randomizer, she then decided to
make every 4th person in her list will taste
her recipe.
Random Sampling & Parameter and Statistics
QUARTER 3 – MODULE 4
Stratified Random Sampling
• It is a sampling procedure in which
members of the populations are
grouped based on their homogeneity.
• The sample is formed by taking out
proportional number of elements from
each stratum.
Random Sampling & Parameter and Statistics
QUARTER 3 – MODULE 4
Stratified Random Sampling
• Example: The school head grouped
the Senior High School students into
ten according to their strand and
gender (HUMSS-Boys, HUMSS-Girls,
TVL-Boys, and TVL-Girls). Then, she
picked 10% of each group to answer
the survey questionnaire.
Random Sampling & Parameter and Statistics
QUARTER 3 – MODULE 4
Cluster Sampling
• It is sometimes referred to as area
sampling and applied on a
geographical basis.
• First sampling is performed at higher
levels before going down to lower
levels.
Random Sampling & Parameter and Statistics
QUARTER 3 – MODULE 4
Cluster Sampling
• Example: Gerald wants to know the
satisfaction rate of their customers for
the breads that they are selling. They
distributed a short survey form to each
family in one barangay.
Random Sampling & Parameter and Statistics
QUARTER 3 – MODULE 4
Multi-Stage Sampling
• It uses a combination of different
sampling techniques.
• Example: When selecting respondents
for a national election survey, we can
use the lottery method first for regions
and stratified method to determine the
number of respondents in each.
Random Sampling & Parameter and Statistics
QUARTER 3 – MODULE 4
Each group will be given a random
sampling technique. They will be required
to think of a scenario about their chosen
technique and perform it in the class.

measures from a population and a sample.
