Radiation technology used in customs 1

In an increasingly interconnected world, maintaining
border security has become a crucial challenge for customs
agencies worldwide. With the rise in international trade, the
need for effective methods to detect illicit goods and contraband
has never been greater. Unlike traditional physical inspections, X-
ray scanning does not require any handling or disassembly of
cargo, vehicle, bus, bag or traveler thus reducing clearance times.
Such approach has proven to be instrumental in enhancing
security and facilitating trade.

This presentation explores the types of X-ray scanning

in maintaining border security and highlights how it aids customs
agencies in their efforts to facilitate trade & security.

X-Ray Scanners

Scanning or non-intrusive inspection refers to non-destructive methods of

inspecting and identifying goods in transportation systems

There is two main category of X-Ray scanners

High Energy Scanners Low Energy Scanners

Fixed Luggage
Scanner Scanner

Movable Body
Scanner Scanner

Backscatter

High Energy Scanners

Fixed Scanners

The inspection process is carried out by entering the truck driver

through the entrance gate after confirming the dimensions of the
vehicle and the permit of the device operator for him and stopping
at the specified area for stopping the truck and then exiting the
scanner and making sure that the operating area is free of any
personnel and proceeding to close the doors and start photographic
process.

Fixed scanner consist of:
A: Concrete wall
B: Scanner movement bars
C: Examination area
D:Two gates of protective shields
E: Radiological scanning device

There are a number of surveillance cameras distributed within

the examination area

operating area is free of any individuals and start pressing the
start button through the POR wireless remote control.

Low Energy Scanners

Luggage Scanners

Dual‐energy X‐Ray security

inspection equipment makes use of
the penetrating power of X‐Ray to
implement the rapid inspection of
the packing baggage and goods.

Low Energy Scanners

Body Scanners

Full-body scanners can detect and locate forbidden

objects concealed under a person’s clothing. In
contrast to metal detectors used extensively at
passenger airports, these devices also respond to
non-metallic objects such as explosives.

Low Energy Scanners

Backscatter Scanners

The patented Z backscatter technology

integrates 225 keV X-ray tube emitting a
spectrum of X-rays for identifying a
range of threat objects. The system uses
X-rays with lower radiation dose to
ensure the safety of users, cargo and the
surroundings.
