8
Using the Biot-Savart Law
1. Chop up the current into tiny pieces and find dq on each one.
2. Multiply dq and other quantities to find dB due to that part of the charge
(don’t forget direction!).
3. Add together all the dB’s using an integral to get the net electric field.

𝜇 𝑞𝑣⃗ × 𝑟̂
𝐵 =
4𝜋 𝑟

9
Using Ampère’s Law
1. Choose an imaginary closed loop along which the magnetic field is
constant.
2. Find the line integral of the magnetic field around the loop.
3. Determine the net current enclosed by the loop.
4. Solve for 𝐵 (don’t forget direction!).

𝐵 𝑑𝑠⃑ = 𝜇 𝐼

10
Main Ideas
o We can use Newton’s 2nd Law and magnetic forces to determine the motion
of objects subject to magnetic fields.
o Magnetic dipoles store energy and experience forces and torques.
o Ampere’s Law can be used to solve for the magnetic field in special
symmetric cases (like Gauss’s Law!).
