Issues Impacting Women's Health

Abortion has been a hotly contested issue in the United States. In the United States, a

1973 supreme court, Roe vs. Wade, made it legal for women to access abortion for women to

terminate a pregnancy without government restrictions. However, the ruling opened doors for

politicians to make rules restricting women’s access to abortion. For instance, some states

such as Mississippi, Ohio, and Georgia have banned abortions past eight weeks. In addition

to the ban on abortions, the political class has proposed various requirements that limit access

to abortion services, such as denying insurance coverage, mandatory counseling, and

ultrasounds. Some states have also proposed laws prohibiting women from obtaining an

abortion from other states.

Abortion has also taken center stage within the social context. The medical

professions in the United States define abortion as a medical necessity that can only be

authorized by a medic for significant health concerns such as fatal abnormalities. As such,

without a medical reason, most healthcare professionals would disagree with a woman's

opinion on abortion. In reference to religion, most denominations oppose any form of

abortion, arguing that a fetus is indeed human life and only God can end life.

The above issues affected women’s health in various ways. For example, unplanned

birds are associated with anxiety, depression, and reduced levels of happiness, which can

substantially affect women’s health status. Furthermore, restrictions on abortions could lead

to death and injuries stemming from unsafe abortions, as most women can not legally access

abortion services. Unsafe abortions are also linked to physical health risks, such as infections,

hemorrhage, damage to the internal organs, and uterine perforation. Restcctve abortions law,

like mandatory counseling and ultrasounds, can also cause distress and stigma.
