PHYS 210 – Chapter 2 – Practice Problems

1. Calculate the electric potential at points A and B due to the two charges as shown in the
figure?
1. A charge -2μC is located on the on the y-axis 2.0 m from the origin at the coordinates (0,
2) while a second charge of +2μC is located on the x-axis from the origin at coordinates
(2, 0).

a) Determine the electric potential at the origin (assume the potential is zero at infinite
distance)

Ans: 9000 V

b) Determine the change in the electric potential energy of the system when a
+1 μC charge is brought to the origin from infinitely far away.

Ans: 9×10-3J

2. How much work is done by an applied force that moves two charges of 6.5 μ C that are
initially very far apart to a distance of 4.5 cm apart?
Ans: 8.4 J
3. An electron is released from rest in a uniform electric of magnitude 2.00  10 4 N / C .
Calculate the acceleration of the electron. (Ignore gravitation).
Ans: 3.51×1015m/s2
