== CHARACTER AVAILABILITY CHART ==
==================================

Certain characters are only available on certain routes through the game.
Avoiding spoilers, the choice between Lawful and Chaotic occurs at the end of
Chapter 1: follow orders for Lawful, or disobey them for Chaotic. At the end of
the Chaotic Chapter 2, you'll receive another offer: accept it for Neutral, or
decline to stay on Chaotic. Depending on what you select for these decisions, a
certain set of characters will be available for you to recruit.

1, 2, 3, etc. = available on this route (Lawful, Neutral, Chaotic) in this

* = Iuria can only be recruited with Gildas in your army. If he is in your

army, even if he is dead in the Warren Report (thanks to World), she is still
recruitable, since the Coda is a bit more relaxed on that score than the main
game.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

NOTE: Several named generic characters that were previously recruitable in the
SFC/PSX version are no longer recruitable, though they do appear in a cutscene.
These are the three named generics who joined with Vice in Chapter 3L (Payton/
Peyton the Knight, Beilev/Beylevra the Exorcist, and Apsala/Apsara the Priest).
All three appear in the "Kin is Kin" cutscene at the beginning of Chapter 3L.

The four named generic Holy/Arc Dragons who joined with Oxyones/Ocionne (Cloud,
Shadow, Typhoon, and ClearSky) are also now gone (she fights with an Arc Dragon
during the Lhazan Fortress battle, but it does not join when she does).

To make up for this, Aloser/Arycelle has been made recruitable in all three
routes, and several new characters have been added (Ozma and Ravness on the
Lawful route, Cressida on the Chaotic route, and Azelstan, Iuria, Lanselot,
and Warren on all routes).

== CHARACTER DOSSIERS ==
========================

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Status:
- Unique (has a unique sprite and portrait, keeps same sprite/portrait during
class change)
- Semi-unique (has a generic sprite with different coloration and a unique
portrait, keeps same sprite/portrait during class change)
- Named generic (has a generic sprite and portrait, changes sprite/portrait
during class change)

Initial class: The class of this character when he/she joins

Unique classes: Any nonstandard classes this character can change to

Available routes: Denotes whether this character is available on the Lawful,

Neutral and/or Chaotic routes

Alignment: Whether character is Lawful, Neutral, or Chaotic (this can be seen

on the status screen with the signifier L, N, or C).

How to recruit: The steps you must take to recruit this character to your army.
If there are multiple ways to recruit the character, they are given.

NOTE THAT THERE ARE POTENTIAL SPOILERS IN THE RECRUITMENT DESCRIPTIONS! So be

forewarned. I've tried to limit them as much as possible, but sometimes you
just have to use them for the instructions to make sense. Caveat FAQtor!

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

ARYCELLE
Status: Semi-unique
Initial class: Archer
Alignment: N (Lawful route), L (Chaotic/Neutral routes)
Available routes: All

How to recruit:
Arycelle is a relatively easy character to recruit, but one of the hardest to
keep recruited if you play the Neutral route (either on a first playthrough or
a subsequent World playthrough).

In the Chaotic route, you will need to rescue her in the battle on the Xeod
Moors. She will reluctantly join you temporarily, and you will have to protect
her through two more battles as a Guest. After the battle on Tynemouth Hill,
when she learns the truth about Balmamusa, she will join you permanently.

IMPORTANT NOTE: If, at the end of Chapter 2C, you make the decision to accept
Leonar's offer and rejoin the Duke to take the Neutral route, her loyalty will
take a drastic plunge to 10, no matter how high it was before; unless you bring
her loyalty up QUICKLY, she will leave your army. Also note that this will
happen even if you originally recruited her on a Lawful or Chaotic playthrough
and are replaying through with World; the only way to avoid this entirely is
to allow her to die as a Guest in 2C, so that she is dead in the Warren Report
even if she is alive in your army.

In the Lawful route, you will similarly need to avoid killing Arycelle in your
battle against her at the Arkhaiopolis of Rhime in Chapter 2 (defeat Vyce
instead). Also keep her alive during the fight against Leonar at the end of
the chapter. She will then automatically join with Vyce, Mirdyn, and Gildas
during Chapter 3.

Comments: Arycelle is the best Archer in the game, bar none (with the
possible exception of Canopus, though he's more versatile as a Vartan). She
begins with high rank in Bows, and if you give her Swiftfoot and Jump to
increase her mobility, she can rain death down upon your foes readily. Later,
in the postgame, giving her a Sidhe Ring or Winged Ring so that she can use
Blinkwalk or Floatwalk on herself whenever needed to gain the high ground is
a good idea. Postgame, I personally like giving her a Lightning-elemental bow,
as she IS nicknamed "Thunder Maiden Arycelle," but use whatever Augment seems
best for the elemental weapons you have.

Sample Archer build:

Bows
Anatomy
Appropriate Augment skill
Counterattack
Strengthen
Trueflight
Jump
Trajectory
Double Shot
Tremendous Shot

In the late-game, replace Strengthen with an appropriate Augment skill.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

AZELSTAN
Status: Unique
Initial class: Buccaneer
Unique classes: Buccaneer, Ranger
Alignment: C
Available routes: All

How to recruit: Recruiting Azelstan is a long, involved process with several

difficult battles. The first step comes early in Chapter 4, after meeting
Prancet at Brigantys Castle. Before going to Mount Hedon, read "Port Omish, Den
of Thieves" and Port Omish will become available. Go there for a somewhat tough
battle (the enemies are level 20 if this is your first playthrough, and you're
likely to be around level 15 or so at this point), during which you must
protect Diego from being killed.

Later, after saving Archiereus Mreuva at Hagia Banhamuba but before attacking
Barnicia Castle, read "The Pirate's Graveyard" to unlock the optional dungeon
of the same name. Go into the Pirate's Graveyard - you don't have to fight any
battles - to unlock "The Dread Pirate" Talk item in the Warren Report. Visit
Port Omish for an event with Diego, then visit Qadriga Fortress. Finally,
after the events at Barnicia but before attacking Heim Castle, go to Port
Omish to fight another battle to save Azelstan from pirates.

At this point, you can go to the Pirate's Graveyard at any point in the
remainder of the game or post-game, and fight your way to the Crystal Halls
area. Azelstan will join you as a guest in this battle, and if he survives the
battle, he will join you permanently. (Note: this may or may not happen if
you are in the middle of the Iuria recruitment process in Coda.)

Note that unlike most of the other characters with a unique class, he does not
give you Pirate's Marks when he joins, so if you want to change him to another
class and then back to Buccaneer - or change Denam, Vyce, or Canopus to the
Buccaneer class - you'll need to find Pirate's Marks by defeating the Archer
in the "On Holy Ground" Pirate's Graveyard battle, or by taking the treasure
at the end of the Graveyard.

Comments: I haven't used Azelstan that much yet; he's pretty good with Fusils,
which makes for a nice combination with 1H Swords. He has some useful action
abilities, such as Evade and Apostate, that allow him to avoid attacks, and he
can use the Ninja's or Ranger's Double Attack as well if you want him to
dual-wield. Overall a very versatile character with good stats. He also comes
with ranks in Herpetology, so I make him my default Reptile-recruiter.

Sample Buccaneer build:

Swords (1H)
Fusils
Herpetology
Counterattack
Trajectory
Field Alchemy
Coax
Evade
Speedstar
Apostate

Sample Ranger build:

1H Swords
Herpetology
Appropriate Augment skill

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

BAYIN
Status: Semi-unique
Initial class: Wizard
Alignment: N
Available routes: N, C

How to recruit: In the battle at the Arkhaiopolis of Rhime in Chapter 1, you

must first keep Cistina alive. If she survives the battle, answer "We seek only
peace." Then, in Chapter 2C, defeat Farrell in the battle at Krysaro to free
Folcurt. Accept Folcurt's mission to Qadriga Fortress to save Bayin; Folcurt
will join as a Guest. Keep Bayin alive throughout the battle, and afterwards
tell him "We will help you" to open a battle at Ndamsa Fortress, where Cistina
is being held. Win that battle with both Folcurt and Bayin as Guests. Cistina
will join you after the battle, also as a Guest. With the entire Liberation
Front crew in tow, win the battle at Golyat and sail to Boed Fortress. Tell
Cistina "Come with us" and she will join, along with Bayin and Folcurt. If
Cistina died in battle at Golyat, either option will allow you to recruit
Folcurt and/or Bayin (if either or both survived).

Comments: He's a very good Earth Magic user, who's useful with status spells,
especially Petrifog a bit later; equip him with a Mind Ring to increase their
chance of hitting. He's somewhat superseded as an Earth-elemental mage by
Sherri in Chapter 4, who has better stats and can have a unique class, but
Petrifog is useful enough that Bayin will still have his place in your army.

Sample Wizard build:

Earth Magic
Cudgels
Anatomy
Augment Earth
Resist Petrify
Resist Silence
Spellcraft
Spellstrike
Field Alchemy
Meditate

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

BERDA THE YOUNGER

Status: Named generic
Initial class: Gryphon (cannot change classes)
Alignment: L
Available routes: all

How to recruit: After saving Lindl, read the Warren Report Talk entry "The
Bandits of Neimrahava." This will open up the Neimrahava Wood, where you can
battle Ganpp and his new pets, Berda and Obda the Younger. If you avoid killing
either of the Gryphons and reduce Ganpp to critical HP, he will surrender and
join your army, along with the two gryphons.

Comments: Berda is a gryphon. Slightly better stats than other gryphons, so if

you like to use beasts, definitely give him a try, especially since he comes
with several good action abilities already learned and equipped. If you're not
a fan of beasts, though, you won't find anything too amazing about Berda to
change your mind.

Sample build:
Anatomy
Counterattack
Knockback
Fortify
Truestrike
Featherstep
Dash
Stun Breath
Numbing Hook
Blood Siphon

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

CANOPUS
Status: Unique
Initial class: Vartan
Unique class: Buccaneer
Base stats: STR 41, VIT 40, DEX 41, AGIL 39, AVD 43, INT 39, MIND 39, RES 36
Alignment: L
Available routes: All

How to recruit: He automatically joins your first battle in Tynemouth Hill as a

Guest. If he survives, he will join your party permanently.

Comments: Canopus is probably the closest thing this game has to a gamebreaker.
He has incredibly good stats, his default class (Vartan) has high Move, and he
can fly. He will excel at whatever you give him to do, but is probably best
used as a sniper: keep him a Vartan with a 2H Crossbow or a 1H Bow/Crossbow and
a 1H Axe, or make him an Archer with a 2H Bow (you'll give up some Move, but
will get a greater attack range and height advantage). He also has access to
Azelstan's unique class, the Buccaneer, if you want to give him access to
Fusils (though you will have to do some futzing with an Ogre Blade to get the
Fusils skill on him, since hawkmen can't normally learn it). Or you can go with
Ogre Battle nostalgia and give Canopus a hammer and let him wail on some bad
guys, as either a Vartan or a Beast Tamer - not quite as overpowered as Archer
Canopus, but sometimes you don't need that much overkill, right?

Sample Vartan build:

Air Magic
Axes
Bows
Anatomy
Counterattack
Strengthen
Fortify
Constitution
Trajectory
Field Alchemy

Sample Archer build:

Bows

CATIUA
Status: Unique
Initial class: Priest
Unique classes: Priest, Princess, Dark Priest
Base stats (Guest): STR 32, VIT 32, DEX 35, AGIL 33, AVD 34, INT 36, MIND 37,
RES 36
Alignment: L
Available routes: All

How to recruit: The Catiua recruitment process begins early in Chapter 4, after
rescuing Archiereus Mreuva. He asks you "Have you the will to wage war upon
her?" Answer "That I cannot do," and Catiua will appear in the Barnicia Grand
Staircase battle later in the chapter. Answer "I shall do what I must," and
she will not appear in the Barnicia battle.

Once you reach Barnicia Castle, the next step is not to let her die if she
participates in the battle with Tartaros (obviously). If she did not appear,
then that's one less thing you have to worry about. After the battle, Denam
will have a conversation with Catiua inside an abandoned room in the castle.
If she participated in the battle, answer her "I did only what I had to do,"
and "You are my sister, and I love you." If she did not appear in the battle,
answer "I never abandoned you," and "I took no joy in our parting." Any other
answer will result in Catiua not joining your army, for reasons that will
become obvious. Catiua will permanently join you once you return to Phidoch
Castle.

Comments: Well, Catiua has THREE unique classes to choose from - more than
any other character - and to top that off, all of them are entirely unique to
her! By the time she joins permanently, you'll be very familiar with the Priest
class (essentially an upgraded Cleric that can use Light attack magic). Her
Princess class is available as soon as she joins, as you get five Princess's
Marks at that point; it's essentially a hybrid mage-fighter class with
increased front-line survivability (thanks to regular armor and the ability to
use some 1H Swords), though the fact that she still has the typical magician's
Move score means that it may take her a while to get up TO the front line. The
Dark Priest is a pure offensive magician class, which has access to numerous
elemental spells and the entire stock of Dark spells (minus Word of Pain).

An important caveat is that none of Catiua's special classes can use missile
attack spells, with the exception of the Priest's ability to use the
Spiritsurge spells and the Dark Priest's Drain series of Dark spells. None of
the elemental missile spells, or Word of Pain, can be used by any of Catiua's
unique classes, which means that unless she is a Priest, her magic attack tends
to be a bit more expensive than your average mage's, since indirect spells cost
more MP. (So keep those Magic Leaves coming!)

As a Princess, I like to give Catiua Ice Magic, since no unique magic user
class comes preloaded with it (Ozma can only use basic attack spells). That way
I have someone to give Ice Requiem (the Ice Apocrypha spell) to. Divine Magic
is also a natural, as Catiua will have much of it learned from her Priest days,
and can also equip the very good Light-elemental 1H Sword Brynhildr after the
penultimate battle (and in subsequent World runs). Optionally also take her
into the Witch class and back, since she can use the Draconic spell Starfall,
which does huge damage to and exorcises the undead. Since she can use light
armor and 1H Swords, give her a skill to boost the damage she can take and let
her go wild with whatever is needed in a given situation.

Sample Priest build:

Divine Magic
Augment Light

Sample Dark Priest build:

Trade the 1H Swords and Fortify for Princess' Whim and Lucky Star if you favor
a rear-guard Princess rather than a frontline fighter.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

CERYA
Status: Unique
Initial class: Valkyrie
Unique class: Shaman
Alignment: N
Available routes: N, C

How to recruit: The first step is a battle against the Dark Knight Oz at Boed
Fortress in Chapter 3, on either the Neutral or Chaotic route. The Chaotic
version is relatively simple; defeat Oz, and Cerya will join you automatically.
The Neutral version is a little trickier...you will still have to defeat Oz,
but Cerya herself is a guest in the battle, in the middle of the enemies and
inflicted with the Leadened status. If you can keep her alive throughout the
battle, you will be rewarded with...Cerya telling you she doesn't approve of
your wishy-washiness and leaving. In Chapter 4, after rescuing Archiereus
Mreuva, read the Warren Report Talk entry "Pirates of Qadriga Fortress" to
unlock an encounter with Captain Ehlrig. Answer him "Will you aid us?" to
recruit both Cerya and Ehlrig.

Comments: Cerya is probably the second-best of the Phoraena sisters for

magical purposes - she has decent physical stats, good if not great INT, and
a high MND score, which makes her good with spell accuracy. Raise her INT with
food and/or cards and watch her blow enemies away as a Fire-elemental Shaman,
or raise her STR and train up her Spears skill and keep her a jack-of-all-
trades Valkyrie (though there are other Spear Valkyries, none of them use
Fire).

Keep in mind that Oracle's Marks are hard to come by, so before you make her a
Shaman, send her through other classes to pick up any abilities you want her to
have as a Shaman. (Meditate is especially useful as a Shaman, so you may want
her to pick that up from the Enchantress class at the very least.)

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

CHAMOS
Status: Named generic
Initial class: Wizard
Alignment: N
Available routes: N

How to recruit: In Chapter 3 Neutral, after the Tynemouth Hill battle with
Ganpp but before the battle at Port Asyton, meet with Leonar at Krysaro to
hear about some captive warriors at Qadriga Fortress. During the battle,
Chamos, Phaesta and Tamuz will be incapacitated guest party members. Revive
them or win the battle before their countdowns run out, and any who survive
will join you after the battle, along with Hobyrim.

Comments: Chamos is a standard Wizard, with Fire and Dark spells. As you'll
probably get better Fire-elemental magicians later, such as Shaman Cerya and
Wicce Deneb, I'd say Chamos is just a little lacking. Still, he may be useful
to you if you like using a full-Fire team, to make the most of Fire Averse
effects.

CISTINA
Status: Unique sprite
Initial class: Valkyrie
Unique class: Shaman
Alignment: N
Available routes: N, C

Tell
Cistina "Come with us" and she will join, along with Bayin and Folcurt (if
either or both survived).

Comments: Cistina suffers from all-rounder syndrome more than any of her
sisters; she's decent at a lot, but excels at nothing. Her base stats are
inferior to those of her sisters, although since you do get her earlier if you
are playing the Chaotic or Neutral routes first, you can use cards and food to
fix that. Raise her INT and make her a Wind-elemental Shaman, or keep her a
Wind-using Valkyrie - it's your call.

CRESSIDA
Status: Unique
Initial class: Necromancer
Alignment: L
Available routes: C

How to recruit: On the Chaotic route, a sidequest will open in Chapter 4 in

the Warren Report. Read "The Balmamusa Dead" to unlock a battle in Balmamusa,
where you must revive the Cleric Oelias (she teleports out) and then slaughter
the undead. Then go to Qadriga Fortress to trigger a battle with the Terror
Knight Dievold. Finally, go to Golyat to face Nybeth, along with some old
friends and enemies, in a battle where you must rescue Cressida. Save her, and
you can tell her "You will not be judged by me"; if your Galgastani Chaos Frame
is high enough, she will join you.

The tricky part here is the Chaos Frame part; that's the general approval you
have among the Galgastani. Hire a newly recruited unit from the shop to get an
idea of their loyalty; if it seems low, you should try to increase it. You
want a loyalty of 50 or above; as loyalty messages change at 40 and 60, you
will have to either go with some guesswork or raise your Chaos Frame higher
than you strictly need to. The most painless way to raise your Galgastani CF,
take one or two high-level non-Galgastani units (I like Denam and Canopus)
along with eleven low-level, unequipped Galgastani units to the Reisan Way.
(You can also use your Galgastani uniques/semi-uniques/named generics if you
like.) Make sure that all are stripped of Field Alchemy skills, then set all
the characters to AI (Melee setting for the newbies, Rear Guard for the more
powerful characters). Let it go, and stop and retreat once all the newbies
have been slaughtered. Each Galgastani death in battle raises your CF
approximately a tenth of a point, so killing 10 units off per battle means
you'll raise a point per battle.

(You can do the same thing, possibly quicker, by using the same setup but
manually controlling your more powerful units to slaughter the weaker ones;
it does, however, require your input, whereas the other basically just needs
you to check it every few minutes to make sure no one's counter is running
out. But you can watch TV/clean your house/read/whatever you want to do while
it's going, which is more my style.)

Comments: Cressida is the only unique Necromancer, and new to the remake.
Overall she's quite useful if you like Undead units, since Necromancers have
the ability to raise stilled Undead and to recruit and heal them.

For the record, recruiting Cressida is the only way to get Necroprentice's
Marks to create your own Necromancers; otherwise, you can only recruit them
from the occasional story/Palace of the Dead battle. She comes with three of
them, and if she is in your battle party, you can win them from the Necromancer
on B18 of the Palace of the Dead.

Sample Necromancer build:

Dark Magic
Necromancy
Augment Darkness
Resist Stun
Resist Silence
Spellcraft
Spellstrike
Master Undead
Animate Dead
Consecrate Dead

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

DENAM
Status: Unique
Initial class: Warrior
Unique classes: Lord, Buccaneer
Base stats: Depends on answers to Tarot questions when starting a new game
Alignment: Depends on route
Available routes: All

How to recruit: As he is the main character, all you have to do is start a new
game and there he'll be.
Comments: As expected from the hero, he's really good. He has access to Lord as
his unique class, which allows him to use most support abilities he's learned
from other classes (and some action abilities, too), so he's as good as your
training has made him. Lord is one of the few classes to use Double Attack,
though, so it might be worth training Denam in a 1H weapon (Swords are a
personal favorite, since there are so many unique 1H Swords you get through the
main plot, but you could easily train him in dual-wielded 1H Hammers or 1H Axes
instead). He can also use all spells (with the exception of Ninjutsu, War
Dances and Necromancy), so he can make a good frontline user of Exorcism (with
the added benefit that several of the good 1H Swords are Light-elemental). But
you can do what you want with Denam - make him a battle caster with double
Spellbooks, or a heavy tank with Phalanx and a 2H Sword. The sky's the limit!

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

DENEB
Status: Unique
Initial class: Witch OR Wicce
Unique classes: Wicce, Shaman
Alignment: C
Available routes: All

How to recruit: Okay, so Deneb is probably the most difficult character to

recruit in the game. During chapter 4, read the Talk topic "Deneb's Emporium"
in the Warren Report. This will unlock her shop, which moves from town to
town depending on the day of the month.

To recruit her as a Witch, you must unlock the village of Vasque by beginning
the Palace of the Dead sidequest and fighting until you clear the battle there.
Then purchase 5 elemental orbs of each kind from her shop; the trouble is
that these elemental orbs are only available by auctioning off dragons of each
elemental type. Once you've done this, she will talk to you. Answer her "No.
Let's hear it," and she will join your party as a guest to pursue the rogue
Punkin. Go to the village of Vasque and you will have to fight a Wicce named
Punkin, accompanied by a bevy of Pumpkinhead Familiars. Defeat Punkin while
keeping Deneb alive, and Deneb will place Punkin in charge of her shop and
join your army.

But wait! Deneb can also join your party as a unique class, Wicce, which has
better stats than a Witch and several unique action abilities. In order for
this to happen, though, you must sell 30 Glass Pumpkins to Deneb BEFORE buying
the last of the elemental orbs to begin her sidequest. When she joins your
party as a guest, she will be a Witch, but when she joins permanently she
will be a Wicce, the same as Punkin. Glass Pumpkins are rare drops from
Familiars in the Palace of the Dead; the easiest way to harvest them is to
repeatedly kill two particular Familiars on B1of the Palace of the Dead (see
the FAQ section for more details). This will probably take anywhere from two
hours (if you're incredibly lucky) to ten or so (if you're not), so be aware
of the extra time this sidequest can take if you decide on the Wicce class.

Comments: As a Wicce, Deneb is possibly the hardest-hitting attack magician in

the game, even more so than Catiua's Dark Priest. Abilities like Magic Time!
and Stirring Kiss are useful to increase Deneb's magic damage and to keep
enemies that get close to her from hurting her. As a Witch, Deneb is a very
good one, but not as good as she is as a Wicce (who can do basically
everything a Witch can do, but more). She comes with Fire and Dark spells
preloaded, so you also have the option of making her a Fire-elemental Shaman
(which you may want to do if you didn't get her as a Wicce, or didn't recruit
Cerya).
Keep in mind that Wicce's Marks are expensive (5000 Goth a pop), and I believe
you can only buy one from Punkin before recruiting Iuria (at which point
Punkin's shop stocks as many as you can afford).

DIEVOLD
Status: Semi-unique
Initial class: Terror Knight
Alignment: C
Available routes: N

How to recruit: In the Port Asyton battle in Chapter 3N, you will have to
rescue Dievold and Oelias from a horde of undead. If they both survive the
battle, answer "Very well. You may join us," to recruit both Dievold and
Oelias (or just Dievold, if Oelias did not survive the battle).

Comments: Dievold is the only unique Terror Knight who joins your party;
unfortunately, Terror Knights are probably starting to lag in power by the time
he joins. If you're going to use a Terror Knight, Dievold is probably a good
one to use; his RT isn't great, but his stats are better than a generic. Equip
him with a good elemental 2H sword once you get one and give him a matching
Augment to up his damage, and equip him with Fortify to help him survive
frontline combat.

DONNALTO

Initial class: Cleric
Base stats: STR 33, VIT 30, DEX 33, AGIL 38, AVD 35, INT 36, MIND 44, RES 38
Alignment: L
Available routes: All

How to recruit: In the battle in Krysaro in Chapter 1, keep Donnalto alive in

the battle. After defeating Moldova, Donnalto will join, along with the Archer
Sara and the Knight Voltare.

Comments: Donnalto is the first semi-unique character you get, and the first
Cleric. He's invaluable early on, when you have to Exorcise undead enemies
(most notably in the Qadriga Fortress battle immediately after he joins).
Clerics are not quite as important later, once your other characters have high
ranks of Field Alchemy, but still serve as cheap healing, status recovery and
exorcists; if you can't come up with anything better to do, have him use a Boon
of Swiftness on one of your combat fighters.

EHLRIG
Status: Named generic
Initial class: Cleric
Alignment: L
Available routes: N

How to recruit: The first step is a battle against the Dark Knight Oz at Boed
Fortress in Chapter 3, on the Neutral route. You will have to defeat Oz, but
Cerya herself is a guest in the battle, in the middle of the enemies and
inflicted with the Leadened status.

Comments: Ehlrig is a difficult character to make use of. First off, his stats
are woefully unbalanced. His RT is equal to that of a regular generic unit,
his magical stats are only average, and while he has high STR for a Cleric,
he's not much more durable than your typical magician, and so is not
particularly suited for frontline combat. He does comes with a high rank in
Hammers, but the only hammer Clerics can use is the female-only Caldia (as
they can't use the male-only Iron Fan).
If you're going to use Ehlrig, then, my recommendation would be to change him
into another class; as a Knight, he could take advantage of his high Hammers
skill as well as use some of his Divine Magic (though you may already be using
Voltare to fill this niche). Alternately, make him something more
appropriate for his profession: he can't be a Buccaneer, but he can be a Rogue,
which has a suitably piratical bandana. (The Rogue's low class RT can also
counterbalance Ehlrig's mediocre RT, and there is no unique Rogue, so I'd say
this might be the way to go if you don't already have a good generic Rogue.
They can even use the Iron Fan! Of course, you'll have to give up Divine
Magic, but them's the breaks.)

Starting skills:
- Divine Magic

FELICIA
Status: Named generic
Initial class: Cleric
Alignment: L
Available routes: all

How to recruit: In the battle in Krysaro in Chapter 1, let Donnalto die in the
battle. After defeating Moldova, Felicia will join, along with the Archer Sara
and the Knight Voltare.

Comments: She's basically there to fill the slot that Donnalto would otherwise
fill; if you get her instead of him, use her as your main Cleric until you get
someone better later in the game. Otherwise, just World back to get her for
completion purposes, as there's very little that's at all special about her.

FOLCURT
Status: Semi-unique
Initial class: Knight

Comments: Folcurt is fast, so he will work well in most jobs. Knight works
well, for Phalanx (especially if you don't already have a 1H Sword Knight).
Otherwise, I like him as a Dragoon.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

GANPP
Status: Unique
Initial class: Beast Tamer
Alignment: N
Available routes: All

How to recruit: After saving Lindl, read the Warren Report Talk entry "The
Bandits of Neimrahava." This will open up the Neimrahava Wood, where you can
battle Ganpp and his new pets, Berda and Obda the Younger. If you avoid killing
either of the Gryphons and reduce Ganpp to critical HP, he will surrender and
join your army, along with the two gryphons.

Comments: He no longer has the unique class (Beast Master) he did in the
original, and his face is...ummm, something else (it's very Brian Blessed in
Flash Gordon), but he does have some pretty good ranks in Subdue and
Teratology. Use him to build up your army of beasts, if you so desire, and
remember that he can also whale on bad guys with an Axe if you give him Fortify
and some decent armor. He's also good with Whips, if you so desire and want to
stay in keeping with the Beast Tamer theme.
Sample Beast Tamer build:

GILDAS
Status: Unique
Initial class: White Knight
Unique class: White Knight
Base stats: STR 42, VIT 43, DEX 41, AGIL 38, AVD 41, INT 37, MIND 38, RES 35
Alignment: L
Available routes: L, C

How to recruit: In Chapter 3 of the Lawful and Chaotic routes, you will reunite
with Mirdyn, Gildas and Warren at Almorica Castle, and the two White Knights
will join up. In the Neutral route, another fate awaits Gildas...

Comments: Gildas is slightly better than Mirdyn, because 2H Swords tend to do

more damage in theory; in practice, you get much better 1H Swords during the
last few hours of the main game (Lombardia, Brynhildr), so he doesn't tend to
catch up until postgame. Still, he's a heavy hitter throughout, and the White
Knight's ability to use Divine Magic can be a lifesaver. (His RT-lowering
move has also saved my butt a few times.)

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

HOBYRIM
Status: Unique
Initial class: Sword Master
Alignment: L
Available routes: All

How to recruit: Hobyrim can be recruited in Chapter 3 of all routes, but is

recruited differently in each route.

In the Chaotic route, after taking Brigantys Castle you must rescue him in a
battle at the Bahanna Highlands (tell him "You would be welcome"). In the
Lawful route, you must keep him alive in a battle against Ozma at the
Arkhaiopolis of Rhime. In the Neutral route, you can recruit Hobyrim two ways.
After the Tynemouth Hill battle with Ganpp but before defeating Nybeth at
Ndamsa Fortress, meet with Leonar at Krysaro to hear about some captive
warriors at Qadriga Fortress. After the battle at Qadriga, you can recruit
Hobyrim (tell him whatever you like when asked if the Dark Knights are your
enemy, then "You would be welcome"). If you choose not to fight this optional
battle, after reporting in at Almorica, a battle at Golyat will open up. Save
Hobyrim from the Hawkman Orgeau there to recruit him.

Comments: No longer the broken Petrification machine he was in the original,

Hobyrim is still very good. His DEX remains sky-high, so he can evade blows
using Preempt like there's no tomorrow, and he can do decent damage with those
2H Katanas. War Dances are mildly useful, but treat them as a bonus rather than
a selling point for the Sword Master.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

IURIA
Status: Unique
Initial class: Songstress
Unique classes: Songstress, Shaman
Base stats: STR 39, VIT 42, DEX 36, AGIL 36, AVD 43, INT 38, MIND 37, RES 37
Alignment: N
Available routes: All (post-game)

How to recruit: To recruit Iuria, you will need Gildas in your army. However,
she is recruitable as long as you have him, even if he is dead in the Warren
Report. I have tested this with a Neutral Coda save in which Gildas is
officially dead, and it still works.

Once the Coda starts, read about "The Songstress of Omish" in the Warren
Report, then go to Port Omish. You will be caught up in a battle that is nigh-
impossible to win (Denam, Gildas and Canopus versus twenty enemies). During the
battle, each of the characters may have a dialogue choice: choose dialogue
that focuses on keeping the peace and taking responsibility and Denam should
eventually be able to suggest a retreat.

After fleeing, the Pirate's Graveyard will be closed. Read the Warren Report
entry "Iuria's Requiem," leave the Warren Report, then go back and read
"Iuria's Secret" and the Pirate's Graveyard should be reopened. Fight your way
through to the eleventh map, "Into the Darkness." Defeat the Wicce Sirene, and
Iuria will join you.

Comments: Iuria's Songstress class is quite good, and since the only other race
which can use it is the Pumpkinhead (which doesn't have Iuria's flying),
definitely consider keeping her one at least some of the time. However, also
remember that she is one of the few characters (along with the Phoraena sisters
and Deneb) who can use the Shaman class. Keep in mind that unlike her brother,
she cannot use the Vartan class.

As a Songstress, Iuria can use Songs to buff and debuff multiple nearby units.
Her earliest song, Ardent Conga, is one of the most useful, and gives MP and
Spellcraft for magic users. The Songs do use reagents (Songstress' Scores,
which are cheaply purchasable from Deneb or Punkin), which means that you may
find that you run out in long dungeons like the Palace of the Dead, which may
limit her effectiveness. She also has useful Action abilities like Echoing
Voice, which doubles Song duration. (Give Treasure Hunt a pass though.)

As a Shaman, Iuria is also good; her base stats are good if not amazing for a
magic user, so she's middle-of-the-pack as far as the Shamans go. However, she
makes a great Lightning or Ice Shaman, as none of the sisters nor Deneb use
those elements by default. (I favor Lightning for the same reason that I
usually give Canopus Air Magic - it just makes sense for Winged units to have
sky-based abilities, after all!)

JEUNAN
Status: Semi-unique
Initial class: Dragoon
Alignment: N
Available routes: L

How to recruit: After taking Brigantys in Chapter 3L, a group of Galgastani

prisoners will ask you if the Hierophant's enemies are also yours. Answer
"How could they be?" and Jeunan will join you.

Comments: He's the first Dragoon you get, and is great against beasts and
dragons for that reason. His Spear isn't the greatest kind of weapon for such
a task - 2H Swords or Crossbows are usually better for that, so you may want
to switch him over.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

LANSELOT
Status: Unique
Initial class: Paladin
Unique class: Paladin
Base stats: STR 44, VIT 40, DEX 38, AGIL 42, AVD 41, INT 40, MIND 36, RES 34
Alignment: L
Available routes: All (post-game)

How to recruit: [FORTHCOMING]

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

LINDL
Status: Unique
Initial class: Fusilier
Alignment: N
Available routes: All

How to recruit: After the battle at Barnicia Castle in Chapter 4, read "Rhamsen
Wreck Raised" in the Warren Report's Talk section. Then go to Grimsby, where
you will have to aid Lindl in a battle against the Dark Knight Martym and his
troops. If you can keep Lindl alive, he will join you, and give you several
Fusilier's Marks as well.

Comments: Well, he's worth it just to open the Fusilier class, because Fusils
are pretty good (at least until they get outclassed by other ranged weapons,
due to no elemental modifiers). But Lindl is also decently speedy, and great
with Crossbows if you're running low on Fusils (which is good, since you'll
have to use them until he hits level 15 and can equip the lowest level Fusil,
the Rimfire).

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

MIRDYN
Status: Unique
Initial class: White Knight
Unique class: White Knight
Base stats: STR 42, VIT 42, DEX 40, AGIL 38, AVD 40, INT 40, MIND 35, RES 39
Alignment: L
Available routes: All

How to recruit: In Chapter 3 of the Lawful and Chaotic routes, you will
automatically reunite with Mirdyn, Gildas and Warren at Almorica Castle, and
the two White Knights will join up. In the Neutral route, Gildas is missing in
action, and only Mirdyn will join.

Comments: Mirdyn is essentially the same as Gildas, an upgraded Knight with

better stats and cooler abilities (not to mention a wider range of Divine
Magic options). Since he's probably already going to have Augment Light, give
him some Holy-elemental 1H Swords once you get them and let him go to town
(though he'll do pretty well even before then).

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

OBDA THE YOUNGER

Status: Named generic
Initial class: Gryphon (cannot change classes)
Alignment: L
Available routes: All

How to recruit: After saving Lindl, read the Warren Report Talk entry "The
Bandits of Neimrahava." This will open up the Neimrahava Wood, where you can
battle Ganpp and his new pets, Berda and Obda the Younger. If you avoid killing
either of the Gryphons and reduce Ganpp to critical HP, he will surrender and
join your army, along with the two gryphons.

Comments: Obda is a gryphon. Slightly better stats than other gryphons, so if

you like to use beasts, definitely give him a try, especially since he comes
with several good action abilities already learned and equipped. If you're not
a fan of beasts, though, you won't find anything too amazing about Obda to
change your mind.

Sample build:

Dash
Stun Breath
Numbing Hook
Blood Siphon

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
OCIONNE
Status: Semi-unique
Initial class: Beast Tamer
Alignment: L
Available routes: L

How to recruit: First, you must have recruited Jeunan during the Lawful route.
Then, read the "Mysterious Blast at Exeter" item in the Warren Report to unlock
the path to the Palace of the Dead. Once you reach Vasque, you'll see Ocionne
be taken by the Necromancer Reymos. After winning the battle, follow them to
Lhazan Fortress. Here things get tricky, because you must keep Ocionne from
dying or being petrified, keep Jeunan and Denam from dying or being petrified,
and keep Ocionne from killing Reymos until Denam, Ocionne and Jeunan finish
their little convo. (It's over when Denam says "Yes, but his remorse is
sincere," and you can feel free to kill Reymos then.) Ocionne will join once
the battle is over.

Comments: Ocionne is the Ganpp of dragons; she comes with rank 2 Tame and
Draconology, so she'll be immensely helpful if you're doing the Deneb side
quest. But even if you're not, dragons are pretty good units anyway, and no
one is probably going to be as good with them as Ocionne. I wish Beast Tamers
were still able to use Crossbows as in the original (she came equipped with the
Roodbow equivalent), but since she can't, she's good with the 1H Axe and a
Blowgun or a Bow, albeit slightly fragile for a frontline fighter. On the
other hand, she makes an awesome 2H Crossbow-using Dragoon, but you'll have to
give up Empower Dragon to do so (no problem if you don't really use it, as I
don't).

Sample Beast Tamer build:

Axes
Blowguns/Bows

Appropriate Augment skill
Parry

Sample Dragoon build:

OELIAS
Status: Unique
Initial class: Cleric
Alignment: L
Available routes: N
How to recruit: in the Port Asyton battle in Chapter 3N, you will have to
rescue Oelias and Dievold from a horde of undead. If they both survive the
battle, answer "Very well. You may join us," to recruit both Oelias and
Dievold.

Comments: At this point you'll already have Donnalto or Felicia as a Cleric,

but you may be feeling the loss of Catiua's Priest support, so you can slot
Oelias in there. She's useful in battles with the undead, which coincidentally
is where most of her special in-battle dialogues are, so deploy her when
things need Exorcising and just use her as a regular Cleric the rest of the
time.

OLIVYA
Status: Unique
Initial class: Cleric
Unique class: Shaman
Alignment: L
Available routes: All

How to recruit: Olivya joins automatically on all routes at Brigantys Castle,

towards the beginning of Chapter 4.

Comments: Olivya is very good as a Cleric; on the other hand, you probably
already have several Clerics (and probably have them coming out of various
orifices if you're on the Neutral route). If you plan on doing the Apocrypha
sidequest, she makes a great Shaman (and naturally lends herself to Water
magic, even though that's one of the less useful schools of magic). Her base
INT is a bit low, as it's not that important to Clerics, so give her cards and
food to increase her magic damage. Even without that, however, she will do very
creditable damage with Nature's Touch.

OZMA
Status: Unique
Initial class: Knight Commander
Unique classes: Knight Commander, White Knight
Alignment: L
Available routes: L

How to recruit: On the Lawful route, read "A Rift in the Dark Knights" in the
Warren Report at the beginning of Chapter 4, before going to Mount Hedon.
After rescuing Mreuva at Hagia Banhamuba, go to Krysaro with Hobyrim at
reasonably high loyalty (above 50). Bring him into the battle against Volaq
and Ozma, and when she asks have him tell her that he is indeed Hobyrim.
Then you must reduce Ozma to less than 10% HP without killing her and defeat
Volaq (not an easy task, since the Templars are very high level); once
you've done both of these things, in whichever order, Ozma will surrender to
Hobyrim and hear his story. When she tells you that she owes you for her
brother, respond "As I owe you for my father" to recruit her.

Comments: Ozma is new to the PSP version, and is a pretty amazing character.
Not only is she the fastest character in game, but the Knight Commander's
stats are quite good, and she has a variety of support and action abilities
cherry-picked from other classes, such as Intimidate and Ivory Tower.
Finally, her high Augment Ice rank combined with Attenuate Ice make her
perfect for battles against Ice-using foes, such as those in the Shrine of
Lyuneram during the Apocrypha sidequest.

Knight Commander is one of the few classes than can use the Ninja's Double
Attack, so she can do some serious damage with two 1H Swords equipped. (You
can also use two Daggers, though she doesn't begin with a proficiency for
them.) She also, however, has a unique Whip finisher - Demon Rose - with a
100% chance of Bewitching a target, so you may want to give her whips
instead. The choice is yours.

Starting skills:
- Ice Magic
- Augment Ice (rank 3)
- Attenuate Ice
- Whips (rank 4)
- 1H Swords (rank 4)
- Rampant Aura II
- Parry (rank 2)
-Counterattack II
- Fortify II
- Resist Stun (rank 4)

Sample Knight Commander build:

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

PHAESTA
Status: Named generic
Initial class: Valkyrie
Alignment: L
Available routes: N

How to recruit: In Chapter 3 Neutral, after the Tynemouth Hill battle with
Ganpp but before the battle at Port Asyton, meet with Leonar at Krysaro to
hear about some captive warriors at Qadriga Fortress. During the battle,
Chamos, Phaesta and Tamuz will be incapacitated guest party members. Revive
them or win the battle before their countdowns run out, and any who survive
will join you after the battle, along with Hobyrim.

Comments: Phaesta is a Spear-using Valkyrie with Lightning magic.

Unfortunately, this is the same niche that Ravness from the Law route fills by
default. This is not a problem if you're only playing through once and only
plan on getting either Ravness or Phaesta. If you're working through all three
routes using World, however, you may end up with some overlap. Ravness has
better stats and starts with much higher affinity for both Spears and Lightning
Magic, but you also may want to use her as the unique class White Knight; if
that's the case, then Phaesta can fulfill your Lightning Spear Valkyrie needs.
Personally, I feel with Ravness and Jeunan, I have more than enough Spear users
leftover from the Lawful route, so I switch Phaesta over to 1H Bow/1H Crossbow.
Both types of bow have powerful Lightning-elemental weapons eventually, so
Phaesta can stay with her starting element while retaining the Move and
survivability of the Valkyrie class. (Teaching her some Divine Magic for
healing purposes couldn't hurt either.)

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

RAVNESS
Status: Unique
Initial class: Valkyrie
Unique class: White Knight
Alignment: N
Available routes: L

How to recruit: You must choose to participate in the Balmamusa massacre at

the end of Chapter 1 and avoid killing her during the subsequent battle. Early
in Chapter 2, an item "Ravness Loxaerion Captured" will appear in the Warren
Report after the Rhea Boum Aqueduct battle. Go to the Reisan Way and choose
to rescue Ravness ("I cannot leave you here"). Then after taking Brigantys in
Chapter 3, recruit Jeunan and read the "Lord of Coritanae Missing" Warren
Report entry before going to Bahanna Highlands. Bring Jeunan into the Bahanna
fight and get the enemy leader, Roberval, below 70% HP to trigger a convo
between him, Jeunan and Denam. When Jeunan says "I am sure by now that his
father joins him," you can kill Roberval; Denam should say "Balbatos must fall,
or they died for nothing" at the end of the battle.

After taking Coritanae later in the chapter, return to Bahanna to encounter

Ravness again. Keep her alive in this battle, and at the end she'll finally
join you.

Comments: Another new character for the PSP version, Ravness is quite good.
Second in speed to Ozma, she comes with Lightning Magic and Spears. She can
also change to the White Knight class once Mirdyn and/or Gildas join, with
their classmarks. Personally, I like her as a White Knight - her speed comes
in handy, and a female White Knight is nice as a change - but she works just
fine as a Valkyrie too.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

RUDLUM
Status: Semi-unique
Initial class: Warlock
Alignment: C
Available routes: All

How to recruit: You can find him on B2 of the Palace of the Dead, cornered by
a number of undead. Keep him alive throughout the battle, and once it's over
he'll join you.

Comments: Rudlum comes with decent Fire and Water spells; you'll probably want
to have him specialize in one of those two at any given time, just to maximize
Augment usefulness. (Fire's buff/debuff spells are better, but you also get
many more unique fire mages than water mages, so it's up to you.) More
importantly, he comes with several Draconic spells, which are decently rare
and allow him to buff your allies. You can often do the same job cheaper and
quicker with items, but he can also learn offensive Draconic spells, which
allow you to attack enemies and inflict serious damage. The Wyrm Gem reagents
for Draconic Magic aren't too expensive, and the only place where you might
run out is the Palace of the Dead, where you can buy more in the few shops in
the dungeon, along with most of the Draconic spells. Note that the offensive
spells are not available from the Palace shops until the Coda (and possibly
not until after recruiting Iuria). I also tend to like using Rudlum as my
Golem-recruiting and empowering Warlock, since he comes in the class and has
no other unique classes to tempt him away.

Sample Warlock build:

SARA
Status: Named generic
Initial class: Archer
Base stats: STR 34, VIT 31, DEX 35, AGIL 38, AVD 37, NT 32, MIND 30, RES 32
Alignment: L
Available routes: All

How to recruit: After the battle in Krysaro in Chapter 1, Sara and Voltare will
join, alongside either Donnalto or Felicia.

Comments: Archers are generally a very powerful class, so Sara may be your
best damage dealer until Arycelle comes along. Even then, having two archers
will certainly not hurt. If that seems like overkill to you, her stats are
good for the more speed- and agility-based classes like Rogue or Kunoichi.

Sample Archer build:

Bows
Anatomy
Appropriate Augment skill
Counterattack
Strengthen
Trueflight
Jump
Trajectory
Double Shot
Tremendous Shot

In the late-game, replace Strengthen with an appropriate Augment skill.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

SHERRI
Status: Unique
Initial class: Witch
Unique class: Shaman
Alignment: L
Available routes: All

How to recruit: Don't kill her in the Hagia Banhamuba battle early in Chapter
4; merely reduce her to less than 10% of her HP and she will teleport out.
After returning to Phidoch to report but before going to Barnicia, go to
Balmamusa with Olivya at decent loyalty (her starting loyalty is fine). If it's
raining, an event should start at the end of which Sherri will join. (If
you're having problems getting it to rain, go to Xeod Moors, use a Horn of the
Savage item to make it rain, then win/retreat and head back to Balmamusa
immediately.)

Comments: Sherri is pretty amazing as a Witch, specializing in Dark and Earth

Magic (so, two different ways to Petrify, plus a host of other great status
ailments!). Keep her as a Witch if you like, or do the Apocrypha sidequest to
make her a Shaman. Either way, her base stats are perfect for a heavy magic
user. As a Witch, she can use Draconic Magic, which is pretty awesome for doing
serious damage. As a Shaman, while she'll lose her use of Dark Magic, her
damage with Earth spells will go up considerably to compensate, especially with
Nature's Touch to amplify their damage. You can't really lose with Sherri,
except by not using her.

Keep in mind that Oracle's Marks are hard to come by, so before you make her a
Shaman, send her through other classes to pick up any abilities you want her to
have as a Shaman. (Fortunately she already comes with Meditate, which is the
most important, so you may not have to worry about this much.)
Sample Witch build:

At higher levels, replace Spellstrike with Draconic Magic (since your Petrifogs
will probably be hitting at close to 100% anyway, thanks to high MND, and by
that point you should have access to offensive Draconic spells).

Sample Shaman build:

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

TAMUZ
Status: Named generic
Initial class: Knight
Alignment: L
Available routes: N

How to recruit: In Chapter 3 Neutral, after the Tynemouth Hill battle with
Ganpp but before the battle at Port Asyton, meet with Leonar at Krysaro to
hear about some captive warriors at Qadriga Fortress. During the battle,
Chamos, Phaesta and Tamuz will be incapacitated guest party members. Revive
them or win the battle before their countdowns run out, and any who survive
will join you after the battle, along with Hobyrim.

Comments: Tamuz starts as a 1H Sword/Crossbow Knight, which gives him a bit

more offensive versatility than your average sword/shield Knight.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

VOLTARE
Status: Named generic
Initial class: Knight
Base stats: STR 35, VIT 35, DEX 35, AGIL 36, AVD 33, INT 32, MIND 31, RES 37
Alignment: L
Available routes: All

How to recruit: After the battle in Krysaro in Chapter 1, Voltare and Sara will
join, alongside either Donnalto or Felicia.

Comments: Voltare is useful as a Knight, especially since he comes with high

Hammers skill (since crushing damage is rare in a Knight, and comes in handy
in those early fights against heavily armored/defensive units such as beasts).

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

VYCE
Status: Unique
Initial class: Warrior (Guest), Ranger
Unique classes: Ranger, Buccaneer
Base stats (Guest): STR 38, VIT 40, DEX 36, AGIL 37, AVD 39, INT 34, MIND 31,
RES 32
Alignment: N (Guest), C
Available routes: L

How to recruit: In Chapter 3L, when you reunite with Mirdyn and Gildas at
Almorica, Vyce (and Arycelle, if she survived) will also join you.

Comments: Vyce's Ranger class is fantastic, with good survivability, the

ability to do tremendous damage using Double Attack, and a few other cool
abilities (such as inherent Wade). He comes with 1H Swords, and he's very good
with them, but he's AMAZING with daggers, especially postgame when elemental
daggers like the Marauder Knife are readily available; give him Augment Water
and a couple of those, and watch him cut through the enemy like butter. You'll
probably want to give him some skills to up his defense, as he'll likely be in
the middle of the fray at all times.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

WARREN
Status: Unique
Initial class: Astromancer
Unique class: Astromancer
Base stats: STR 40, VIT 34, DEX 38, AGIL 40, AVD 42, INT 42, MIND 35, RES 45
Alignment: L
Available routes: All (post-game)

How to recruit: [FORTHCOMING]

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

XAPAN
Status: Semi-unique
Initial class: Berserker
Alignment: C
Available routes: L

How to recruit: In Chapter 2L, you'll find yourself having to rescue Xapan in
a battle at Qadriga Fortress. Keep him alive, and at the end of the battle he
will offer to join you. You can either accept his services here, or refuse
them, in which case after finishing the Brigantys Castle events in Chapter 4,
you can go to Golyat for a battle against Xapan. Get him to critical HP and
he'll offer to join you again.

LEONAR
Status: Unique
Initial class: Knight
Base stats: STR 42, VIT 43, DEX 38, AGIL 36, AVD 40, INT 40, MIND 36, RES 40
Alignment: L

Comments: Leonar joins as a Guest during Chapter 1, and briefly in Chapter 3

Neutral/Lawful [?]. He's a relatively good Knight, though his limited time in
your party means you can't do much with him, and as he's a Guest, you can't
control him even if you could. (I really do wish they'd made him permanently
recruitable in the remake, at least on the Lawful and/or Neutral routes.)

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

================================
== FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS ==
================================

Q: So what is this World thing you keep talking about? How does it work?

A: Glad you asked! Once you beat Tactics Ogre for the first time, the Timeline
option in the Warren Report (the thing that keeps track of cutscenes and
battles, etc.) will change to World Tarot. "Anchor points" will be inserted
at various points in the storyline. At this point, you can either play through
the post-game quests (the Coda chapter) or rewind to a previous point in the
game, making different decisions and taking different routes through the game.

You keep your current army and levels when you World back, so it is possible
to have some interesting things happen (like fighting Chaotic route Vyce with
Lawful route Vyce). Enemies, even in story battles, will scale to your level,
with appropriate equipment. However, if a character is not in your party for
storyline purposes, then they won't have battle dialogue or anything (so,
Lawful Vyce won't have anything to say to Chaotic Vyce). Similarly, things
you've done on other routes will not necessarily carry through to this one; if
you beat the Apocrypha subquest on the Neutral route, and then are replaying
the Chaos route, you'll have to re-defeat the six fortress battles and talk to
Mreuva again to unlock the Shrines if you want to revisit them.

The anchor point system determines how your progress is saved. To have your
replay saved, you must play from one anchor point to another without World-ing
back out in between; after reaching another anchor point, that point's old data
is overwritten with the new data. This isn't a huge deal in the various mid-
game portions, which are pretty distinct, but since all routes share the same
Chapters 1 and 4, you may want to be careful in what order you overwrite
things. So, for example, say you World back several times to the point at
which you recruit Catiua after the Barnicia Castle battle, to harvest
Princess's Marks. Then you replay through on another route, not recruiting
Catiua and getting Denam's Lord class instead, overwriting the anchor point
afterwards. If you World back to the original anchor point now, you will only
get Sovereign's Marks for Lord Denam; to get more Princess's Marks, you will
have to replay that anchor point segment, choosing the right options to
recruit Catiua once again.

There are certain things that are not affected by the World system; Deneb is
one (when you get her, whether it's in Chapter 4 or in the Coda, she is
permanently part of your army for storyline purposes, and even in routes where
you did not recruit her Punkin will still be running her store). The Coda
events tend to be a bit more relaxed too, although you must have Catiua alive
in the Warren Report in your party to embark on the third Coda quest.

The nice thing about the World system is that it means that no character is
missable per se; you may have to replay through part (or even most) of a
certain route in order to recruit a character, but you won't have to restart
the game if, say, you miss Ozma on the Law route, or Cerya on the Neutral
route. On a more practical note, this means that it is possible to have every
special character in the game in your army at the same time. If you do this,
though, you'll have to sacrifice some generic units, because your army can
only hold 50 units altogether and there are 40 unique characters.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Q: What's wrong with my alignment? I did [X] at the end of Chapter 1 and yet
I'm on the [X] route, WTF?

A: Note that Law and Chaos are not the same things as good and evil. Following
your liege lord's orders places you on the Lawful route, while disobeying and
doing your own thing places you on the Chaotic route. It's possible to make a
lawful decision that is also a morally "bad" decision, or to make a chaotic
decision that is morally "good."

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Q: What route through the game is best for character recruitment?

A: It entirely depends on your style of play and which characters you prefer.
In general, the Lawful route has a better selection of strong physical
attackers with unique classes (Vyce, Ravness, Ozma) and a good selection of
beast-oriented units (Dragoon and Beast Tamers). The Chaotic and Neutral routes
both give you all four Phoraena sisters, who can become arguably the best
elemental magic class in the game. Chaos also gives you the only unique
Necromancer (andthe only way to obtain Necromancer classmarks), while Neutral
gives you several more Clerics due to its focus on the undead.

Personally, I think for character recruitment the Lawful or Neutral routes are
best: this may be a slightly unpopular opinion, but I don't find the Chaotic
route all that great plot-wise, for all that it is the "good" option, and all
the characters who join you on that route also join on Neutral with the
exceptions of Gildas and Cressida.* (Iuria also won't join postgame if you
don't have Gildas in your party, but if you're replaying it on Neutral, that
SHOULDN'T be an issue thanks to the World system.) Neutral also gives you a
large number of route-specific characters, both named generics (Phaesta, Tamuz,
Chamos, Ehlrig) and uniques (Dievold, Oelias).

The World system makes this essentially pointless, though, as you can play
through all the different routes in turn and recruit everyone; so I'd recommend
going with the route you want to first, and not worrying about who you can or
can't recruit unless that's important to you.

* In the original SFC/PSX version, Aloser/Arycelle, the best archer in the

game, was Chaos-exclusive; she never joined on the Lawful route (in fact,
killing her was the only way on that route to get the Revivify spell, to be
able to bring your troops back to life). On Neutral, she would automatically
leave if you accepted Leonard/Leonar's offer to rejoin the Duke. Since Arycelle
can now join on all three routes (and merely takes a VERY HEAVY hit on loyalty
if you choose Neutral, but one that can be remedied), Chaos now has a lot less
to offer.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Q: Who are the best characters?

A: Well, that entirely depends on what you want from your characters. Some
people like characters best who have large roles in the story, while some
prefer to use customized generic characters named after friends. The ability
to raise statistics via cards and food means essentially your best characters
can be whoever you want them to be.

One of the most popular ways to decide who is "best," however, is base RT (or
time between turns), since you can increase stats but not decrease RT. Nearly
all of the unique/semi-unique/named generic characters have RT equal to or
better than normal generic units, which is part of why many people prefer
named characters to generic units.

Name RT Mod
==== ======
Ozma -15
Ravness, Hobyrim -12
Gildas, Folcurt -10
Olivya, Sherri, Lindl -9
Cistina, Cerya, Jeunan, Lanselot, Iuria -8
Denam, Canopus, Mirdyn, Ganpp -7
Arycelle, Ocionne -6
Vyce, Catiua, Warren, Xapan, Azelstan, Cressida, Deneb -5
Voltare, Felicia, Rudlum -4
Sara, Oelias -3
Donnalto, Bayin, Phaesta, Dievold -2
Tamuz, Ehlrig, Berda the Younger 0
Chamos, Obda the Younger +1

(For the record, Leonar has a RT modifier of -10.)

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Q: How do I get Dragons for Deneb?

A: If you haven't been raising a Beast Tamer all along, this is easiest on the
Lawful route, where you can recruit Ocionne for your party (with both Tame and
Draconology at rank 2). However, Ganpp makes a useful substitute if you teach
him both dragon-recruiting skills.

This sidequest is probably easiest after having beaten the game once, when you
can use the World Tarot to go back to certain dragon-heavy fights (the first
fight at Madura Drift, etc.). The elemental dragons are fairly easy to find
this way. Arc and Dark Dragons are a little tougher, but you may have picked up
a classmark or two already by killing them throughout the game. The most
difficult dragon to find is probably the Hydra, but you can find it in a few
story battles and in the Apocrypha sidequest (in the Lhazan Fortress battle and
subsequent Shrine of Lyuneram battles). Also keep in mind that once you've
auctioned a dragon, you can buy not only the orb from a shop but several of its
classmarks (with the exception of Hydras, which cannot change classes).

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Q: How do I get 30 Glass Pumpkins for Wicce Deneb without wanting to kill
myself?

A: This is easiest if you're not going for the "no Chariot/retreat" titles, but
CAN be done using the old quicksave/reset method (it just takes a LOT longer).
Once you unlock the Palace of the Dead and defeat the first level (or the first
two, if you want Rudlum), retreat. Go out, then return to level 1. There are
two enemies that may appear in this random battle that have a chance to easily
drop Glass Pumpkins - the middle Faerie along the upper wall, and the Gremlin
directly in front of your party that begins on a patch of mold. (Both are in
the Familiar class.) Kill those two enemies, then retreat to collect any loot
they drop. If you're lucky, one or both will drop a Glass Pumpkin. (There's
another Gremlin toward the back of the battlefield that can also drop them,
but he's difficult to reach unless you're willing to fight through the entire
fight rather than just using the retreat method.) If they drop cards instead of
item bags when you kill them, you can Chariot back if you want and kill them in
a different way, and maybe they'll drop items this time around. If you're going
for the no Chariot or retreats title, then your best bet is to fight the battle
normally, using quicksave/reset to kill those particular enemies in a different
way if they don't drop bags on the first time through. That way you can
guarantee getting at least three Glass Pumpkins each time through (even if each
battle takes you an hour or two).

Using the kill-and-retreat method, it took me about 6 hours to collect 30 Glass

Pumpkins. If I'd been more methodical about using Chariot to ensure the Faerie
and Gremlin dropped bags instead of cards, I might have been able to shave a
couple of hours off that time.

Note that this must be done before you buy the final elemental orb from Deneb!
Otherwise you're wasting your time, as Glass Pumpkins are not that useful
normally (primarily in crafting Palace Guides to skip floors of the Palace of
the Dead on a second or later run-through).

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Q: I went the Neutral route, and now Arycelle's talking about leaving! Help!

A: Going Neutral drops Arycelle's loyalty down to 10. You need to raise it ASAP
if you want to keep her; otherwise, you can let her leave and then WORLD back
later to re-recruit her (without all the SP or tarot cards you put into her,
though). To raise her loyalty, you can either a) have her gain a rank in a
skill (which raises loyalty 10 points for each rank) or b) have her pick up
Fool or Lovers tarot cards, each of which raises loyalty by a random amount. If
you don't raise it quickly, though, you may lose her after a few battles, so I
recommend hitting a random battle and letting her beat on your own guys until
she gains a weapon level (give her something she probably doesn't have any
levels in yet, like Daggers, so she'll rank up more quickly).

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Q: I just had to save Cistina in Rhime in Chapter 1. How many more of these
annoying "save-the-Guest" missions are there?

A: There are more than you will probably want to deal with, especially since
the Guest AI in this game is often...let's just say "special." Counting both
"save-the-Guest" missions and missions where you have to keep a Guest alive
to recruit them later on, they are as follows:

Chapter 1: Donnalto (Krysaro), Cistina (Arkhaiopolis of Rhime)

Chapter 2L: Ravness (Reisan Way), Xapan (Qadriga Fortress), Arycelle (Almorica
Passageway)
Chapter 2C: Arycelle (Xeod Moors, Lake Bordu, Tynemouth Hill), Folcurt
(Qadriga Fortress, Golyat), Bayin (Qadriga Fortress, Golyat), Cistina
(Golyat)
Chapter 3L: Ravness (Bahanna Highlands), Hobyrim (Arkhaiopolis of Rhime)
Chapter 3N: Cerya (Boed Fortress), Chamos/Phaesta/Tamuz (Qadriga Fortress),
Oelias/Dievold (Port Asyton)
Chapter 3C: Hobyrim (Bahanna Highlands)
Chapter 4: Azelstan (Port Omish [twice], Pirate's Graveyard - Crystal Halls),
Cressida (Golyat), Lindl (Grimsby), Ocionne (Lhazan Fortress - Within the
Fortress; Lawful only to recruit), Deneb (Vasque), Rudlum (Palace of the
Dead B2)
Coda: Iuria (Pirate's Graveyard - Into the Darkness)

[Note: I have heard that you must keep Warren alive to recruit him as well in
Coda, but I have not confirmed this personally.]

The most difficult of these are probably Cistina in Chapter 1, Xapan in

Chapter 2L, Cerya in Chapter 3N, and Azelstan and Rudlum in Chapter 4. In
addition, while it's not hard to keep Ocionne alive in the Lhazan Fortress
battle in Chapter 4, it can be difficult to keep her from killing Reymos long
enough to get all the dialogue needed to recruit her if you're on the Lawful
route.

For all of these battles, it is useful to have two things: one, someone who
can equip a Lobber and has high levels of Field Alchemy, to throw healing items
to the Guest if they appear near-death (and ideally has high Move to get in
range to use the Lobber), and two, someone who is lightly-armored or unarmored
and can act as a decoy to lure enemies to attack him or her instead (this is
often referred to as the "naked Canopus" strategy, due to his high Move as a
Vartan). Sometimes the two can even be combined, though that can be dangerous,
as if your decoy character dies, you will have no one to lob healing items to
your Guest.

In addition, there are a few battles where someone is actively fighting you
but you must not kill them in order to recruit them later. These are as
follows:

Chapter 1: Ravness (Balmamusa, if you choose to follow orders for Lawful route)
Chapter 2L: Arycelle (Arkhaiopolis of Rhime)
Chapter 4: Sherri (Hagia Banhamuba), Ozma (Krysaro; Lawful-only), Xapan
(Golyat; Lawful-only, if you didn't recruit him in 2L), Catiua (Barnicia
Grand Staircase [optional]), Ganpp/Berda the Younger/Obda the Younger
(Neimrahava Wood)

For Sherri, Xapan and Ganpp and his Gryphons, you can just bring them down to
less than 10% HP and they'll join or escape. For Ravness, Arycelle and Catiua,
you must keep them alive while completing the battle (defeating the Galgastani
forces, Vyce or Lanselot Tartaros, respectively). Ozma is a special case, as
you must defeat Volaq AND bring her down to less than 10% HP for her to end the
battle and join.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Q: I'm having problems getting an event to trigger, and I know I've done
everything right to get it!

A: If you're sure you've done everything, sometimes you have to leave and then
come back. (Port Omish has a lot of these; if a Port Omish event isn't
happening and it should be, go up to Golyat or Almorica, then return and it
should trigger.) If you're still having problems, double-check the Warren
Report (especially the Talk section) and make sure you've read everything that
can be read.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Q: You keep talking about raising stats with food and tarot cards. How do I do
this?

A: Tarot cards, as you've probably noticed, are sometimes dropped on the

battlefield after killing an enemy. Have one of your units end their turn on
the space which the tarot card occupies to have them pick it up. Different
tarot cards will have different effects, but in general they will either raise
one of your stats by a small increment (small enough that it will take several
cards to make it grow one point), raise your unit's loyalty, or increase/
decrease your unit's Luck.

Food can be found by auctioning beasts and dragons at a shop. Auctioning a

Dragon will allow you to buy Dragon Steak, which restores 50 TP and slightly
increases STR and VIT (at about the same level as a tarot card). Auctioning an
Octopus will get you Steamed Mollusks, which also restore TP by 50 and boost
INT and MND. Auctioning a Gryphon will let you buy Braised Skewers, which give
a boost to DEX and AGI as well as the TP restoration. Finally, auctioning a
Cockatrice will net you Minced Patties, which again restore TP and increase AVD
and RES.

This gives a recruitment path through each route for each character available
on that route. (Note that this does not include Deneb, who is available any
time during Chapter 4 on any route, and will always be considered part of

her. Also keep in mind that I have yet to recruit Lanselot and Warren, so they
are not included on this chart.)

== WARREN REPORT ==
===================

This section contains Warren Report entries for all recruitable characters for
the route(s) on which they are recruitable. I'm using endgame entries (pre-
Hanging Gardens or during the Coda)*, so this may reveal in-game information
that you have yet to discover (such as various characters' confrontations with
Nybeth on B5 of the Palace of the Dead), as well as major plot events later in
the game, so don't read this section unless you have beaten the given route
already, or are amenable to being spoiled.

Also, the default name is used for the hero (Denam). The name for the hero's
order is the name I used, the Order of Valeria; replace it with whatever you
named your own order.

SPOILERS BELOW! READ AT YOUR OWN RISK!

* Exceptions are Lanselot and Warren, as I have yet to recruit them and so
have not seen their Warren Report entries once they join you.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

DENAM

Name: Denam Pavel/Denam Morne

Age: 18

A Bakram hailing from Golyat who leads the Order of Valeria. He joined the
Resistance after freeing Duke Ronwey from his imprisonment at Almorica Castle,
and later took part in the massacre at Balmamusa.* Despite setbacks he
eventually came to lead the Resistance against the Bakram and Dark Knight
forces.

He was reunited with his father, Prancet, at Brigantys Castle, and from him
learned the truth of Catiua's past. Olivya also revealed he was actually born
in Heim of Bakram descent, with his father the brother of Regent Brantyn Morne.

He fulfilled his father's dying wish and led the Resistance to victory against
the Dark Knights, defeating them in a bloody battle.
* Note that it says this in both the Lawful route AND in the Neutral route,
where you did not participate in the massacre (presumably a bug).

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

VYCE
Name: Vyce Bozeck
Age: 18

A Walister hailing from Golyat who grew up with Denam. He was formerly the
leader of the New Walister Alliance.

Together with Denam he rescued Duke Ronwey and joined the Walister Resistance.
He later broke his ties with the Resistance after strongly opposing the massacre
of innocent Walister at Balmamusa. He went on to form the New Walister Alliance
to champion Walister self-rule and break the nobility's grip on power, earning
much favor from his people.

He eventually reconciled with the Resistance when Denam took up its leadership.
His might in arms served the Order of Valeria well, helping bring the war to an
end.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

CATIUA
Name: Catiua Pavel
Age: 19

Catiua's true name is Versalia Oberyth. She is the daughter of the Dynast-King
and the Queen's handmaiden Mannaflora. Soon after her birth she was taken in by
Abuna Prancet and raised in Golyat. She knew nothing of her lineage besides the
fact that Prancet was not her true father.

After the Dark Knight Lanselot revealed the truth to her, Loslorien forced her
to accompany them under the pretense of protection. She was later rescued by
Resistance forces advancing on Barnicia Castle.

She sided with the Resistance, bringing the war to an end and reclaiming the
Valerian throne. Her coronation fast approaches.

There has been no word of him since.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

THE STAR SEER WARREN OMON

Name: Warren Omon
Age: 63

A Xenobian of unknown origin who once led the Mages Regiment of the Kingdom of
New Xenobia. He is more a prophet than a teller of fortunes. He came to Valeria
to recover the sword Brynhildr at the behest of King Tristan of Xenobia.

After being grievously wounded during the Bakram invasion of Rhime, he

recuperated at Almorica. He saved Denam when the Chaos Gate collapsed during a

Knights of the Kingdom of New Xenobia.

Like the Holy Knight Lanselot, he was banished from Xenobia for misconduct.

are left disappointed, as he can manage little more than a smile. Gildas and
Mirdyn are as chalk and cheese.

(after joining)

A Xenobian born in the Hyland city of Xandu who once served with the Holy
Knights of the Kingdom of New Xenobia.

(before joining)

A lover of drink and women, chivalry is not his strong point. However, he is
also a dependable comrade who fights with great skill.

(after joining)
He came to Valeria with the Holy Knight Lanselot to recover the sword Brynhildr
at the behest of King Tristan of Xenobia.

to Sir Leonar, and was a close supporter of Duke Ronwey.

She turned her back on the Resistance after opposing the massacre of civilians
at Balmamusa. She then fled to Galgastan to be with her mother. There she worked
with enemies of the Hierophant to incite revolution in Galgastan.

Denam helped her repel Galgastani forces that pursued her after she freed the

Resistance to help Denam put an end to it.

Fortress. Though several comrades were killed at the hands of Dark Knights sent
to wipe out partisan forces, Cerya was saved by Denam.

She then joined the Order of Valeria, seeing in Denam a kindred spirit.

THE MAGUS SHERRI

Name: Sherri Phoraena

Age: 24
A magus who once served the Bakram hosts. Once a missionary for the Order of
Philaha, she left for a different calling upon the death of her mother. She
eventually became a high-ranking member of the Bakram army.

She sought to take Archiereus Mreuva captive at the Hagia Banhamuba, but was
routed by Resistance forces. Fearing punishment for her failure she went to
ground in Balmamusa, but was discovered there by the Resistance. Her sister
Olivya then persuaded her to join the Order of Valeria.

THE WARRIOR CISTINA

Name: Cistina Phoraena

Age: 19

A Bakram formerly with the Liberation Front. She was born into the family of
an Archiereus of the Order of Philaha, but was driven from Heim after Abuna
Brantyn ousted her father from power. When her mother died she joined her sister
Cerya in forming the Liberation Front. She later left the Front, disturbed at
the lengths to which her sister would go for victory. She joined the Order of
Valeria after judging that Denam shared similar values.

After speaking with her sister Olivya at Brigantys Castle, she mended her ties
with the Order of Philaha.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

SIBYL OLIVYA

Name: Olivya Phoraena

Age: 18

A Bakram who was once a sibyl of the Order of Philaha. She is the daughter of
Archiereus Mreuva. After escaping political strife in Heim, she continued to
pass on the teachings of the Order with her father. She joined the upper
echelons of the Order upon her father's disappearance, and her stoutness of
heart garnered much trust from the congregation.

She came upon Abuna Prancet while traveling the Corpsevale on the outskirts of
Heim, and took the ailing abuna to Brigantys Castle. When Denam came to the
castle she arranged for them to meet, and later told him of his lineage.

She then joined the Resistance in the hopes that it would lead her to her own
father.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

ABUNA DONNALTO

Name: Donnalto Presence

Age: 52

A Walister who fights for the Resistance and serves the Order of Philaha. He
once cared for orphans at a church in Almorica, but it was razed to the ground
by the Galgastani after war broke out, and he lost all that he held dear. He
now devotes his life to seeking vengeance.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

THUNDER MAIDEN ARYCELLE

Name: Arycelle Dania

Age: 19

A Walister hailing from Krysaro. She and her brother took shelter with the
Resistance after their parents died in the war. Her brother was captured by the
Galgastani and taken to Balmamusa, where he became a victim of the massacre.

(Neutral/Chaotic) She clashed with Denam, believing him responsible, but was
driven back. After learning the massacre was the work of the Resistance, she
left their ranks and joined the Order of Valeria.

She was once courted by the Resistance commander Sir Leonar.

(Lawful) After learning the massacre was the work of the Resistance, she left
their ranks and joined the New Walister Alliance. She became a member of the
Order of Valeria when Alliance leader Vyce reconciled with Denam.

He later accepted an offer from Denam to join the Order of Valeria.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

THE MAGUS BAYIN

Name: Bayin Rosen Orne

Age: 58

A Bakram formerly with the Liberation Front. He once taught at the Mages

He later accepted an offer from Denam to join the Order of Valeria.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

SIR DIEVOLD

Name: Dievold Obdilord

A Galgastani from Brigantys. He is the son of the Necromancer Nybeth. When war
broke out he was slain for opposing Hierophant Balbatos, but his father later
resurrected him through necromancy. However, his new body consists of a
patchwork of corpses, and he has changed irrevocably.

It seems he knows something of Sibyl Oelias's past, but he does not speak of
it.

(Note that on the Chaos path he goes by the name Dievold Rane.)

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

SIBYL OELIAS

Name: Oelias Obdilord

Age: 18

A Galgastani from Brigantys. She is the daughter of the Necromancer Nybeth. She
resented her father's debasement of human life, and sought solace in the Order.
When her brother Dievold fell victim to Nybeth's necromancy, she resolved to
confront him. Together with Dievold she set off to locate their father.

They tracked him to the Palace of the Dead, where he revealed she was his wife
and not his daughter. He spoke of fusing the soul of his dead wife with his
daughter Amala's body, but the particulars of the matter are not clear.

acts he had been made to commit.

After meeting Denam at Brigantys Castle, he saw in him a kindred spirit. Since
then he has fought for the Resistance.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
OCIONNE, WYRMCALLER

Name: Ocionne Rabine

Age: 15

A disciple of the Sea God Vasque who survived a purge of the enemies of
Hierophant Balbatos. Her village was attacked by Jeunan's wyrmknights, and now

slaughtered. She was saved by the quick actions of Denam and went on to join
the Resistance.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

THE PIRATE AZELSTAN

hearts. Said to have returned unscathed from the deadly Pirate's Graveyard.

A young warrior hailing from the southern continent of Balboede who has trained
in the use of the fusils made there.

He came close to defeat at the hands of the Dark Knight Martym at Grimsby, but
was saved by Denam.

He journeyed to Valeria to purvey the sophisticated weaponry of his homeland.

The guns made there can inflict terrible damage, but require training to use as

Name: Sara Ostvald

Age: 22

A Walister serving with the Order of Valeria. She is an archer with the Knights
of Almorica. Her father and brothers were also bowmen with the knights, but all
perished in the early days of the war. Her pinpoint accuracy with the bow more
than compensates for her lack of brute strength.

She returned to her mother's side after the defeat of the Walister and the
capture of Duke Ronwey. However, she returned to her post as soon as she
received word of the Duke's rescue.

She initially served with Leonar's troops, but then joined the Order of Valeria

of Valeria.

the years, and they are known for their loyalty to the duke. They live by the
motto, "Serve with each sweep of the blade."

When Leonar was made leader of the duke's personal troops, Voltare was
appointed his second in command. His steadfast nature and closeness in age to
Leonar forged a strong bond between them.

Following the recapture of Almorica Castle, he met with ambush while pursuing
the Necromancer Nybeth with Leonar. After Denam came to their rescue, he left
Leonar's side and became a member of the Order of Valeria.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

SIBYL FELICIA

outskirts of Almorica, eventually becoming a sibyl of Philaha. Her parents also

aid to those suffering in Krysaro. Hearing of Duke Ronwey's liberation, she
defied the opposition of her superiors and joined the Walister Resistance.

Valeria after Denam went to her aid at Krysaro.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

THE SPELLBINDER CHAMOS

Name: Chamos Zalman

Age: 62

A Walister serving with the Order of Valeria. He is a spellbinder with an air of

confidence about him. Before war broke out he had a small apothecary in
Almorica. He joined the Resistance when his wife became a casualty of the
conflict. In the early days he put his experience to use by gathering herbs and
preparing medicinal concoctions. When Duke Ronwey was imprisoned upon the defeat
of the Walister army, he resolved to take up arms. Despite his advanced years,
he does not shy from battle.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

THE MAGE-KNIGHT PHAESTA

Name: Phaesta Morandi

Age: 28

A Walister serving with the Order of Valeria. When war broke out she was a
mage-knight with the Knights of Almorica. She was present at the first
engagement between Galgastani and Walister forces at the Arkhaiopolis of Rhime.

A taciturn and earnest Walister of the Knights of Almorica who serves in the

returned to Almorica Castle. He has stared death in the face many a time, yet
still lives on.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

CAPTAIN EHLRIG

Name: Merrik Ehlrig

Age: 33

A Bakram formerly with the Liberation Front. He was at sea when the Dark
Knights attacked Boed Fortress to wipe out the Liberation Front, and so escaped
with his life.

After meeting up with Cerya at Rhime, they set out for Qadriga Fortress to
rebuild their forces. They continued the work of the Liberation Front under the
guise of pirates, calling themselves the "Free Seas."

encountering Denam again.

An offspring of the gryphon Berda raised by the Beastmaster Ganpp. Though still
young in gryphon years and smaller than Berda in stature, his intelligence and
strength far surpass his peers.

stray too close. A peck from him is more than enough to keep unwanted company
at a distance.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
OBDA THE YOUNGER

Age: 2

An offspring of the gryphon Obda raised by the Beastmaster Ganpp. He is

slightly smaller than Berda the Younger, having just reached adulthood, but is

him can be a painful proposition.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

XAPAN THE MERCENARY

Name:Xapan Illudas
Age: 45

A soldier with the Walister Resistance. He is a sellsword who trades his

services for coin. Willing to take on any task for the right price, they say he
would sell his own mother to line his pockets.

He was attacked by pirates after the Galgastani put a price on his head, but he
defeated them with Denam's help. With his previous patron slain at the battle
of the Psonji Weald, he petitioned Denam to hire him. He has fought for the
Order of Valeria ever since.

from death at the hands of her father.

Despising Nybeth for defiling the corpses of her mother and sister, she gave up
the necromantic arts. She resolved to fight alongside Denam to defeat Nybeth
and avenge her kin.

- The Official Bradygames Strategy Guide by Casey Loe and Doug Walsh (with
contributions by Kristin Walsh) is very helpful and well-done, even if it is a
bit lacking in post-game content and some of the rare loot drops. Definitely
worth picking up.

- The Japanese Tactics Ogre wiki (http://masterwiki.net/tacticsogre/) is

incredibly in-depth and is constantly being updated. Even if you don?t know
Japanese, Google Translate might get you at least some of what you need to
know. Just be aware that a few things have changed between the JP and US/EU
versions aside from the names (such as character stat growth). Thanks to the
wiki for the RT values of the characters.

- Many helpful posts on the GameFAQs message board for this game, especially
