It is often said that globalization has been intensified by the progress of technology and in turn

weaken the relevancy of the nation state. Although I have to agree to a certain extent that
technology does increase globalization however, it definitely does not weaken the relevancy of
the nation state. This is especially true during the Covid-19 pandemic where the nation state was
ever present in contributing and shaping the daily lives of its citizen in social and economic
aspects.

The nation state role in administering the society is still as relevant 30 years ago when it was first
introduced (James, 2000) as it is now. This was evident in the event of the Covid-19 pandemic
when the virus was spreading fast, on that day the world was reminded on the importance of
nation states geographical border authority and its power in controlling infectious diseases. In
social aspect, the nation state was essential in elimination panic situation that might resulted
from the continuous spread of the virus from international traveling. For example, in a finding
with regards to the effect of border control, it was establish that Australia early implementation
of strict border control measures resulted in an effective prevention over the spread of the virus
in that country (Australia Department of Home Affair, 2019). In addition, the fast intervention of
the nation state to enforce a lockdown on itself played a decisive role in the protection of the life
of its citizen

With technology and globalization, the sharing of information existed at incredible speed and
convenience. However, this convenience can cause harm when utilized by irresponsible
individuals. The nation state selected by the people thus became the requirement to act as an
authority in the surveillance of its use. For example, in Singapore it was reported that news
circulated via internet claiming the country’s Ministry of Health discovered that Covid-19 was
not a virus but a form of bacterium and aspirin is suitable as a cure (Gov.SG, 2019). This leads
the authorities of the country to quickly amend the falsehood. With the intervention of the nation
state, much harm from misconception was avoided. A nation state is relevant in this globalize
world to provide security in times of chaos.

As technology increase in its capability and globalization deepens, it will be a relieve to know
that the nation state is still here to tend to the different problem face by different nation with its
own set of needs. The relevancy of a nation state is much clearer, thanks in part to Covid-19
pandemic. During that period, the economy came to a stand still and many individuals and
families were affected in their livelihood. The nation state was able to give assistant by
distributing stimulus packages to its citizen in a bid reinvigorate the economy and rebuilt life in
the society. The government of Singapore for example have given close to $100 billion in aid to
its citizen and businesses that was affection in the pandemic (Singapore budget, 2022).

In conclusion, even when technology progress and made incredible impact on globalization, the
concept of nation state and its relevance will not be weaken or affected and the need for the
nation state will not be abolished. The nation state will always have control over technology and
globalization and the relevancy of the nation state depend on itself not the impact of technology
or globalization. The nation state in this globalizes world act as a regulator and mediator for the
administration of human living and globalization is a movement that can be control and the only
changes it can make is the way nation states react to one another in commercial, social or
environmental aspect for the better living of the people. Hence, I do agree to a small extend only
that technological change has deepened globalization and weakened the relevance of the nation
state.
