Activity 1.4
NASA’s Home and City Website

1. Explore and identify the technologies that we are currently using in our everyday lives.
Visiting NASA’s website, I discovered numerous technologies that are currently
integrated into our daily lives. In the city, technologies can be seen such as the food safety
systems and refrigeration showcase in the grocery that help for the preservation and safety of
foods for our everyday consumption. In Home where we usually stay, I found varieties of
technologies that I use every day. These includes skin creams which help me to take care of my
skin, environmentally safe sewage treatment for us to excrete waste without ruining the
environment, hairstyling tools, coffee makers, LED light bulbs designed to regulate sleep cycles,
energy usage sensors useful for reducing household energy consumption, magnetic-fluid
speakers for enhanced audio experiences, digital cameras for capturing images, wireless
headsets, cloud computing platforms facilitating data storage and access over the internet, blue-
light-blocking glasses to reduce eye strain, and portable water filtration bottles.

2. Pick three of the technologies you identified that you most frequently use, and trace their
original uses in the scientific study of our physical world.
Three technologies that I regularly utilize, as identified on the NASA website, LED light to
light up my room, cloud computing platform for accessing data on the internet, and digital
cameras to capture images specially that I am a Biology student.
a. LED Light Bulbs
• Original Use:
o Use for growing plants and providing astronauts with light that helps in
stabilizing their sleep cycles. Also in laboratory settings, LED lights were
employed for precise and adjustable lighting conditions in experiments
requiring specific wavelengths or intensities of light.
• Now:
o It is widely distributed that everyone has access to having one at an
affordable price. Aside from being energy-efficient, we used this kind of
bulb to protect and help us to have a better sleeping cycle.
b. Cloud Computing Platform
• Original Use:
o Cloud computing systems were initially utilized in scientific research for
data storage, processing, and analysis. Scientists and researchers
leveraged cloud computing infrastructure to store and manage vast
amounts of data generated from experiments, simulations, and
observations.
• Now:
o Everyone has access to this technology and has become an essential part
of our daily lives. It allows us to access and store information. Also, cloud
computing allows collaborative research by providing a platform for
sharing resources and conducting analyses remotely, fostering
interdisciplinary collaboration among researchers and students.

c. Digital Cameras
• Original Use:
o Originally, NASA’s team of engineers created this much smaller, more
energy-efficient cameras for scientific research, particularly in fields like
astronomy, where they allowed for high-resolution imaging of celestial
objects. Digital cameras revolutionized data collection in various scientific
disciplines, enabling researchers to capture and analyze images with
greater precision and efficiency.
• Now:
o Many used it for capturing memories. As for me, I use it to document
specimens in my biology classes.
