PROBLEM 18 – 0527: Compute the stresses for a reinforced concrete slab given
that M = 2000 kip–in. Ec = 3 × 106 psi and Es = 30 × 106 psi.

Solution:
n = {Es / Ec} {(30 × 106) / (3 × iO? ” 10)} = 10
∴ (n ∙ As) = 10 × 5.08 = 50.80
Taking moments about the neutral axis (NA), we have,
(15) (x) (x/2) = (10) (5.08) (30 – x)
i.e. 7.5x2 = 1524 – 50.8x
or 7.5x2 + 50.8x – 1524 = 0
This is a quadratic equation in x.
Solving for x, we get
x = + 11.26" and x = – 18.0"
Therefore, x = 11.26"
Now, lever arm jd = d – (x / 3)
= 30 – {(11.26) / 3}
= 26.24"
Moment on concrete side Mc = fc ∙ (bx / 2) ∙ jd
But M = Ms = Mc = 2000 × 103 lb–in (given)
Therefore, 2000 × 103 = fc ∙ {(15 × 11.26) / 2} × 26.24"
or
fc = [{2000 × 103 × 2} / {15 × 11.26 × 26.24}]
= 902.5 psi
Now, Ms = As ∙ fs ∙ jd
But M = Ms = 2000 × 103 lb–in
∴ 2000 × 103 = 5.08 ∙ fs ∙ 26.24
∴ fs = {(2000 × 103) / (5.08 × 26.24)}
= 15004 psi
