PROBLEM 18 – 0525: For the beam shown in figure, compute the moment carrying
capacity of the beam. Assume fc' = 4000 lbs/in2 and
fs = 20,000 lbs/in2.

Solution: For fc' = 4000 lb/in2, from ACI code table V (see PREP),
we have n = 8, fc = 1800 lb/in2.
Taking moments about neutral axis where As = 7.09 in2
13x(x/2) + [(2) (8) – 1] 2.20(x – 2.5) = 8(7.09) (22 – x)
or 6.5x2 + 33x – 82.5 = 1248 – 56.7x
or 6.5x2 + 89.7x = 1330.5
This is a quadratic equation in x.
Solving for the positive x, we get
x = 8.98".
We have, jd = [{(M1 + M2)} / {(C1 + C2)}]
where M1 = c1a1 and M2 = c2 ∙ a2.

c1 = (1 / 2) fc(b) (x)
= (1 / 2) fc(13) (8.98) = 58.3 fc
a1 = 19.01
Thus, M1 = 58.3 fc × 19.01 ≅ 1110 fc.
c2 = [(2) (8) – 1] 2.20(0.721 fc)
= 23.8 fc
a2 = 19.5"
Thus, M2 = 23.8 fc × 19.5" ≅ 465 fc.
c1 + c2 = 58.3 + 23.8 = 82.1 fc
and M1 + M2 = 1110 fc + 465 fc = 1575 fc.
Therefore, jd = {(M1 + M2) / (c1 + c2)} = {(1575 fc) / (82.1 fc)} = 19.2"
and the maximum moment in concrete
Mc = 1575 fc
= 1575 × 1800
= 2,835,000 lb–in
= 236.25 kip–ft.
and the maximum moment in steel
Ms = Asfsjd = 7.09(20,000) (19.2)
= 2,722,560 lb–in
= 226.88 kip–ft
Note that Ms < Mc
Thus the steel governs.
And the maximum moment the section can withstand = 226.88 kip–ft.
Check, however, to see if fsc > 20,000 lb/in2.
If M = 2,722,560 lb–in, fc = {M / (1575)}
= 1729 lb/in2.
Then, concrete stress next to compression steel
= 0.721 fc = 1247 lb/in2.
or fsc = 0.721 fc × 2 × 8
= 1247 × 16 = 19952 < 20,000
Therefore, OK.
