Per the National Electrical Code, a cable tray system is "a unit or assembly of units or sections and associated fitings forming a rigid structural system used to securely fasten or support cables and raceways." What does this mean? + Cable trays support cable the way that roadway bridges support traffic. + A bridge is a structure that provides safe passage for traffic across open spans. + Cable tray is the bridge that allows for safe transport of wires across open spans. + Therefore, think of cable tray as the structural component of a building's electrical system. Description and Selection Since Cable Tray is used in a wide variety of applications and under widely varying conditions, it is important that you gain an understanding of material specifications and structural design, and apply that knowledge when selecting trays and specifying fittings, parts, and accessories. Cable Tray systems provide rigid structural support for cables in a variety of commercial and industrial applications. The basic styles of cable tray are: Ladder, Perforated and Solid Bottom Channel Tray Type and Wire Basket Ladder Ladder consists of two longitudinal side members (side rail) connected by individual traverse (rung Support) members. Itis intended for use as a power cable or control cable support Channel Tray Channel is a one piece support with either ventilated perforated or solid bottom sections. These sections are used with a single power cable, multiple control, or signal circuit cables, which would provide better electrical shielding and better insulation mechanical protection from Foreign Object Damage (FOD) Quick List Selection Process ‘Some of the considerations for Cable Tray selection are 1. Support Span Issues are: Strength and Length : Very important to first consider the support span as it affects the strength of the system and the length of the straight sections required. 2. Working Load Issues are: Size (Width, Loading Depth, and Strength) Cable Load Types and numbers of cables to support-Total cable load in kg per linear meter (kgimeter), Power - is single layer - issue width (refer to local electrical code), Low Voltage - is stacked - issue loading depth and width (refer to affecting code) Select a Cable Tray system that meets the working load for the support span required and a straight section length that fits the installation. NEMA VE 2 - Straight sections equal to or larger than span 3. Installation Environment Issues are: Material and Finish : a, Indoor Dry - Institutional, Office, Commercial, Light Industrial use Aluminum, Pre- Galvanized Steel, Electro Galvanized Stee! b. Indoor Industrial - Automotive, Pulp and Paper, Power Plants use Aluminum, Pre-Galvanized Steel, Possibly Hot-Dipped Galvanized After Fabrication (HDGAF) . Outdoor Industrial - Petrochemical, Automotive, Power Plants use Aluminum, Hot-Dipped Galvanized After Fabrication (HDGAF) 4. Outdoor Marine - Off Shore Platforms use Aluminum, Stainless Steel. The primary reason to limit deflection in cable tray systems is appearance. Engineers and owners take pride in the appearance of their installations. So rigid restrictions on deflection of cable trays installed at eye level or in a prominent location are common. However, it is neither economical nor good engineering practice to restrict deflection of a cable tray system in less prominent areas. Methods of Decreasing Deflection There are various ways to limit deflection of a cable tray. Ifthe objective is minimal installed cost they should be considered in this order: + Increasing depth of the tray. Deflection in any location can be reduced by increasing the depth of the load-carrying side members and/ or by adding to their cross-sectional area. Adding to the depth generally utilizes the material most economically. «Decreasing span length. For economic reasons, this method of reducing deflection should be a last resort, since it increases field labor considerably. However, it can be an effective means to improve the appearance of an installation when the number of spans to be reduced is small in comparison to the number in the entire installation. Summary As a guide, a spandeftection ratio of around 1/200 satisfies most owners. This ratio provides an allowable deflection of 15 mm in a 3 meter span, 18 mm in a 3.66-meter span, and 30 mm ina 6- meter span under the actual loads encountered. Tip :021.9674344 - Fax: 021.9674344 PTNANDYA PERSADA SEIAHTERA Page ii Materials and Construction Cable tray systems are commonly fabricated from a corrosion-resistant metal or from a metal with a conrosion-resistant finish, The selection of the proper material is essentially an economic consideration. Aluminum Alloys Cable tray products are most widely formed from the 6000 series alloys. Alloys in this group contain silicon and magnesium in approximate proportions fo form magnesium siicide, thus making them capable of being heat-treated. Major alloys in this series are 6061 and 6063, which are among the most versatile of the heat treatable alloys. Stee! Steel cable trays are used principally in environments which are relatively free from corrosive attack. They are available with vanous types of comosion-resistant finishes; usually hotdip galvanized. The main advantages of using steel in cable tray fabrication are its high strength and low cost. Its disadvantages are inceased structural weight, poor comosiomresisiance, and low electrical conductivity Stainless Stee! Stainless steel contains at least 10 percent chromium, along with other elements to develop specific properties. Depending on the quality of the elements present in a stainless alloy, PT. Nandya Persada Sejahtera offers cable trays and accessories in both the 304 and 316 series. ‘These austenitic alloys are remarkable in several respects. Unlike the other two classes, they contain niokel in quantites from 4 to 22 percent, while the percentage of carbon is kept relatively low. When chromium is increased for improved corrosion resistance, nickel must also be increased to retain the austenitic structure 304 stainless steel has chromium and nickel increased and carbon lowered to reduce carbide precipitation and increase corrosion resistance. Lowering the carbon content also makes welding easier. 316 stainless steel has molybdenum added to improve corrosion resistance and high temperature strength, The carbon content is also lowered to improve welding performance. Finishes Metalic finishes Cable trays fabricated of steel can be protected from corrosion by coating with another metal, the most effective way and commonly use for protecting the Metallic Cable Tray is Zinc Coated also known as Galvanizing, Zinc protects stee! in two ways. First it protects the steel as a coating and second as a sacrificial anode to repair bare areas such as cut edges, scratches, and gouges. The corrosion protection of zinc is directly related to its thickness and the environment This means a 0.2 mil coating will last twice as long as a 0.1 mil coating in the same environment. The Zinc coating or galvanizing process using one of the following methods: + Electro galvanized Zinc Recommended Use indoor Electro galvanized Zinc (also known as zinc plated or electroplated) is the process by which a coating of zinc is deposited on the steel by electrolysis from a bath of zinc salts. This finish is, standard for cable tray hardware and some accessories. Zink Plated standard, provides a minimum zinc coating thickness of 5 microns When exposed to air and moisture, zinc forms a tough, adherent, protective film consisting of a mixture of zinc oxides, hydroxides, and carbonates. This fim is in itself a barrier coating which slows subsequent corrosive attack on the zinc. This coating is usually recommended for indoor use in relatively dry areas, as it provides ninety-six hours protection in salt spray testing per ASTM B117. Tip :021-8674346 = Fax :021-8674348 PT. NANDYA PERSADA SEJAHTERA- = Page ili + Pre-Galvanized Zinc (ASTM A525), Pre-Galvanized steel is produced by coating coils of sheet steel with zinc by continuously rolling ‘the material through molten zinc at the mills—This process applies a zinc coating to sheet steel prior to fabrication of the product (pre-galvanized cable tray) by passing the metal downward through a molten ammonium chloride flux bath, and then into the zinc and out again by means of ral. The Pre Galvanized standard zinc coating designation is G90, The G90 specification calls for a coating of 0.90 ounces of zinc per square foot of steel This results in a coating of 0.45 ounces per square foot on each side of the sheet. This is important when comparing this finish to hot dip galvanized after fabrication. Pre-Galvenized steel is produced by coating coils. of sheet steel with zinc by continuously rolling the material through molten zinc at the mills. This is also known as mill galvanized or hot dip mill galvanized. These coils are then slit to size and fabricated by bending, shearing, punching, or forming to produce a pre-galvanized cable tray products. + Hot Dipped Galvanizing After Fabri (ASTM A-123), ‘ASTM Designation A123. Specification for Zinc Coating (Hot Dip) on Assembled Steel Products—This process is used to apply a zinc coating to an already fabricated product. The Product is first cleaned in a caustc bath, then further cleaned by a pickling acid bath. The article is then thoroughly rinsed and completely immersed in a bath of molten zino. A metallic bond ocours resulting in a zinc coating that completely coats all surfaces, including edges and welds. The nature and thickness of the coating depend largely on the immersion rate, temperature of the bath, immersion period, and withdrawal rate. The resulting coating consists of an outer layer of relatively pure zinc, and lower layers of iron-zinc compounds. Generally, hot dip coatings are highly non-uniform, Painting Cable Tray We also offers painted cable tray (or epoxy powder coated) to any color specified by the customer. It is important to note that there are key advantages and disadvantages to ordering factory painted cable tray. we PT. Nandya Persada Sejahtera typically does not recommend factory painted cable tray for most applications. Painted cable tray is often used in “open ceiling” applications, where all the overhead equipment and structure is painted the same color. in this type of application, additional painting is often necessary in the field, after installation, to ensure all of the supporting components, such as hanger rods, clamps and altaching hardware have been painted uniformly. Pre painted cable tray interferes with common grounding practices, requiring the paint to be removed at splice locations, andior the addition of bonding jumpers that were otherwise unnecessary. This additional field modification not only increases the installation cost, but causes potential damage to the special painted finish It is typically more cost effective to use an Aluminum or Pre-Galvanized Steel cable tray and paint it after installation, along with the other un-painted building components. Consult painting Contractor for proper surface preparation. Tip : 021-8674344 - Fax : 021-8674344 PT.
