Photo Scavenger Hunt

Challenge
Towards Truth and Reconciliation
Land Acknowledgement
We are very excited to bring forward the Photo Scavenger Hunt Challenge,
but first want to begin by acknowledging that we are all participating in this
challenge on the traditional territory of many Indigenous peoples, both
recorded and unrecorded. While we are not all gathered physically on the
same land, it's still important to acknowledge that so much of our existence
is nurtured by the land we each live, work, and play on. Recognizing land is
a way of honouring the indigenous peoples, past and present, who have
been living, working, and taking care of the land. The land, wherever you
are, provides the food that we eat, the air that we breathe, the earth that we
rest our feet on, and the roofs over our heads. We thank all generations of
people who have taken care of this land, and deeply appreciate their
historic connections. We encourage all units to learn about the areas they
are in and start the challenge with a land acknowledgement.

In order to gain knowledge and aid in creating a safe and inclusive space
for Indigenous youth and adults, we'd like to invite all adult members to
take GGC's Colonization and Indigenous Resilience e-module to learn more
about anti-Indigenous racism and Indigenous history in Canada. You'll gain
knowledge to create a safe and inclusive space for Indigenous youth and
bring a decolonial lens when delivering programming. Find the training on
Member Zone (About Guiding –> Diversity and Inclusion –> D + I trainings
for members).

ACTIVITY #1 - FRAME IT

SPARKS BROWNIES GUIDES PATHFINDERS RANGERS LINK TREFOIL

PROGRAM PLATFORM UNIT'S OWN

PROGRAM AREAS: Art Studio (Experiment and Create), How To (Build Skills)
ESTIMATED TIME: 30-45 min

DESCRIPTION:
In today's day and age capturing something on camera is a basic and essential skill. Many people
use photography for fun and quite a few fields of work require basic camera knowledge. In this
activity build a frame, which will act as a camera/viewfinder. This will help us envision what we want
to picture with more surface area than a regular camera.

YOU WILL NEED:

Frame Template (seen on the next page)
Cardboard
Scissors
Items to decorate
Music

INSTRUCTIONS
MAKING THE FRAME
1. Trace frame templates onto cardboard and cut out the middle
2. Decorate the frame
USING THE FRAME
1. Ask the unit what they would like to see photographed.
2. Talk about different ways to photograph something and see different perspectives.
a. What if we sit on the ground and take a picture or stand on our tippy toes.
b. Should we hold the frame above our heads?
c. Is the frame straight? What if we turn the frame? Or put it on an angle?
3. Have the group envision the frame as a camera and tell them to go around your meeting space
with a partner "photographing" their favourite things. Whenever they take a "picture" they must
say "Frame It." Play music while this is happening; aim for 2-3 songs to be played while they
"photograph."

TIP: Many members may also have cameras at home; consider asking members to bring them
from home

INSTRUCTIONS
1. As a unit, look and talk about the cameras gathered in your meeting space. Take this opportunity to
ask some questions.
a. What kinds of cameras do we have?
b. Do any of these camera's need film to work?
c. Will some cameras develop pictures instantly?
d. Which cameras have a flash?
2. Take time taking pictures with each camera. Observe the quality of the picture, if you can tell right
away.
a. Were any of them more user friendly?

PROGRAM PLATFORM UNIT'S OWN

PROGRAM AREAS: Local Communities (Connect and Question)

ESTIMATED TIME: 30-45 min

DESCRIPTION:
Introducing someone new to your neighbourhood can be fun, and it can remind you of all the things you
love about your community. So why not take a fluffy friend on a tour of your community! Pick up your
stuffed animal, plan your route and take a walk! Your stuffed animal might just wave at the things they see
along the way. This walk is a great way to take in your surroundings before you potentially photograph
them in the Photo Scavenger Hunt Challenge.

YOU WILL NEED:

A stuffed animal friend Appropriate clothing for an outside walk

INSTRUCTIONS:
1. Did you know that if you hold a hug (with someone else or
even with yourself) for 20 seconds, it can make you more
relaxed or calm? Pick a fluffy friend you want to spend some
time with, and give them a big squeeze! Hold the hug for 20
seconds.
2. Get ready to show your fluffy friend around. Think about your
favourite things in your community or neighbourhood that you
want to show off. With an adult or as a unit, plan a walking
route you can take that shows off your favourite places.
3. Head out for your walk with the person or people you planned
with! Show your fluffy friend some of your favourite things, like
your special climbing tree or play structure, or places, like the
house where your favourite neighbours live. As you stroll, you
and your fluffy friend can wave at the people and places you
see.

ACTIVITY #5 - DIY DETECTIVE

SPARKS BROWNIES GUIDES PATHFINDERS RANGERS LINK TREFOIL

PROGRAM PLATFORM UNIT'S OWN

PROGRAM AREAS: Science Lab (Experiment and Create)

ESTIMATED TIME: 0-15 min

DESCRIPTION:
A long time ago, detectives would have used a magnifying glass to get a close-up look at something.
Today, microscopes and photo cropping/enhancing software let forensic scientists get an even better
look. Whether you use a microscope or a magnifying glass, taking a closer look can make all the
difference when you’re searching for something! In this hands-on activity, you’ll make your own magnifier
to help you search for items on your Photo Scavenger Hunt.

YOU WILL NEED:

A container with a round bottom that bulges out (one per person)
Example: an empty ornament ball, a glass jar, top of a clear water bottle
Access to water

BEFORE YOU START

As a unit, brainstorm a list of all the tools a detective or forensic scientist
might use to solve a mystery.

INSTRUCTIONS TO MAKE YOUR OWN MAGNIFYING GLASS:

1. Get a clear container and wipe off any fingerprints or
smudges.
2. Pour a little water into it. It should be less than half full.
3. Wipe off any extra drops of water on the outside.

ACTIVITY #6 - POWER POSE

SPARKS BROWNIES GUIDES PATHFINDERS RANGERS LINK TREFOIL

PROGRAM PLATFORM UNIT'S OWN

PROGRAM AREAS: Life Stuff (Build Skills)

ESTIMATED TIME: 15-30 min

DESCRIPTION:
Many people are often criticized for sharing their opinions and thoughts online. This can result in a digital
world where they feel restricted – like they shouldn’t speak their minds or “take up space” in
conversations. In this activity, you’ll practice taking up space IRL (in real life) so you can feel more
empowered to do so online. Strike a power pose and feel your strength! Take pictures of your power
poses afterwards to remember how powerful you are!

YOU WILL NEED:

A clear, open space
Optional: Markers (enough to share)
Optional: Cameras (enough to share)
Optional: Upbeat music and something to play it with

INSTRUCTIONS:
1. As a unit, share your ideas about what it means to “take up space.” This could include both online and
real-life examples.
2. Spread out so you’re at least one arm’s length away from anyone else.
3. To practice physically taking up space, use your body to create some power poses. If you want, play
some music to help you feel empowered for this part. You can start by calling out some poses to get
your brain and body moving. Try: Legs wide, fists on hips, Lunge (one leg in front, one in the back)
with arms to the sides, Lunge with arms in the air, Star-shaped with arms and legs out (add a jump!),
Heart to the sky, shoulders firm (Add your own ideas or just do what comes naturally!).
4. After you’ve experimented, pick the pose that makes you feel the most powerful and freeze in that
pose. When you freeze, think about: What is your face doing? Does your facial expression help make
you feel strong? Change your expression if you need to. What does it feel like to take up space? Feel
the ground under your toes and react to what your body is doing.
5. Take pictures in your most powerful pose as a reminder of your strength!

*NOTE: Activities have been slightly modified from the program platform to cater towards the Challenge

ACTIVITY #6 - PASS IT ON

SPARKS BROWNIES GUIDES PATHFINDERS RANGERS LINK TREFOIL

PROGRAM PLATFORM UNIT'S OWN
PROGRAM AREAS: Life Stuff (Build Skills)
ESTIMATED TIME: 15-30 min

DESCRIPTION:
Communication is SO important to being a great leader. It’s how we share our thoughts and messages with others.
For communication to work, your message has to be sent AND received. In this “telephone”-style game, you’ll look
at a picture (could be a picture you took for the Challenge) and try to get your friend at the end of the line to draw
what you saw!

YOU WILL NEED:

Image Cards (1 set per group) OR photos from the Challenge
Chart Paper (1 sheet per group)
Markers (1 per group)
A roll of tape

NOTE: Before you start print and cut out the Image Cards for each group OR have pictures from the Challenge.
Tape a piece of chart paper on the wall for each group.

INSTRUCTIONS:
1. As a unit, talk about the word “communication”. What does it mean? How does it work?
2. Make a small group and sit in a line, one in front of another, facing your piece of chart paper on the wall.
3. The person at the back of the line gets a stack of image cards.
4. If you’re at the back of the line, look at the card on the top of the stack and whisper what you see to the person
in front of you. Give as much detail as you can. *Hint: Try to be really quiet when you whisper to the person in
front of you so no one else can hear what you said!
5. The second-last person in line whispers what they heard to the person in front of them, and this continues up
the line until the message reaches the front of the line.
6. If you’re at the front of the line, go to the chart paper and draw what you heard. Then, tell the rest of your group
what you heard!
7. The person at the back of the line will show the group the image card that started the game. As a group, you
can talk about how close (or not) the image on the card is to the one drawn on the chart paper.
8. The person from the front of the line (who drew on the chart paper) goes to the back of the line and everyone
else shuffles one place forward in line.
9. Play again (repeat steps 1-7) and keep playing until everyone has had a turn to draw.

ACTIVITY #7 - NATURE PERSPECTIVES

SPARKS BROWNIES GUIDES PATHFINDERS RANGERS LINK TREFOIL

PROGRAM PLATFORM UNIT'S OWN

PROGRAM AREAS: Nature Discoveries (Into the Outdoors)
ESTIMATED TIME: 15-30 min

DESCRIPTION:
Ever thought about what the world looks like from a rock’s perspective? Or from the p.o.v. (point of view) of a bird in
a tree? Head outside and look at nature a little differently by snapping pictures from new viewpoints.

YOU WILL NEED:

Cameras/Smart phones (1 per pair)

NOTE: Before you start print and cut out the Image Cards for each group OR have pictures from the Challenge.
Tape a piece of chart paper on the wall for each group.

INSTRUCTIONS:
1. On your own, in pairs, or as a unit, brainstorm at least five creatures or objects in nature that would have a
different viewpoint on the world than you. For example, a rock sitting on the ground wouldn't see the world the
same way you do (if it had eyes). Or think of a bee, what it sees would change based on how high or low it
decides to fly. If you get down on the ground and position your head beside the rock, you’ll have a different
viewpoint than usual.
2. Choose a few perspectives that you want to capture through photography.
3. Go outside and find a place to explore these perspectives. On your own or with a partner, try to get into different
positions that might be similar to these creatures’ or objects’ perspectives. (Make sure you’re safe and careful if
you’re climbing to get a new perspective.)
4. Use a smart phone or camera to take a picture from each new perspective.
5. Once you’ve captured all the pictures you want, take a look at your photos and/or share them with others. Think
or talk about:
a. What do you notice?
b. How is this perspective different from your own?
c. What might this creature/object see that you don’t?

ACTIVITY #8 - PICTURE PROTECTOR

SPARKS BROWNIES GUIDES PATHFINDERS RANGERS LINK TREFOIL

PROGRAM PLATFORM UNIT'S OWN
PROGRAM AREAS: Life Stuff (Build Skills)
ESTIMATED TIME: 15-30 min

DESCRIPTION: YOU WILL NEED:

Your pictures can reveal a lot more about you than Identity Editing Images (see next page for
just a charming smile! They might also be showing template)
things you wouldn’t want some people to see, like Option 1 - virtual editing
where you live and how you spend your time. Photo editing apps (on the smart phones)
Explore safe habits when using the internet and or laptops with photo editing software
practice protecting your identity by editing the Challenge photos digitally
pictures you share online in this hands-on activity. Option 2: physical editing
Physical photos from the Challenge
Markers/sharpies
Craft supplies
INSTRUCTIONS:
1. As a unit, brainstorm some things you can do in your pictures to protect your privacy.
a. Why is it important to keep your personal information private when you’re posting pictures online?
b. Who might you want to share your location with? Who wouldn’t you want to share it with?
c. When you post pictures with other people in them, what can you do to protect their identities?
2. Take a look at the Identity Editing Images (you can lay them out so everyone can see them or look at
them on a screen).
3. Share what you notice about how the privacy of the people in the pictures has been protected. How
have they changed their appearances or hidden their faces/identities? How have they changed or
hidden the backgrounds to make them less locatable?
4. Take a few pictures from the Photo Scavenger Hunt you just completed
5. If 'digital' use either the built-in editing tools on your smart phones or a photo editing software on a
laptop to edit the pictures you took to so that you aren’t identifiable and you don’t give away your
location in them. If 'physical' edit the photos manually using sharpies/craft supplies.
6. For example, if you are wearing a sash, is your unit’s name on it? That’s a clue about where you live.
7. Come together as a unit and share your pictures. If you want, you can have a mini-gallery walk and
talk about the strategies you used to protect your privacy.

ACTIVITY #10 - EMPOWER-MEMES

SPARKS BROWNIES GUIDES PATHFINDERS RANGERS LINK TREFOIL

PROGRAM PLATFORM UNIT'S OWN
PROGRAM AREAS: Life Stuff (Build Skills)
ESTIMATED TIME: 15-30 min

DESCRIPTION:
Have some fun boosting the confidence of others with a meme! A meme is generally a photo or video clip
with words framing it that make it funny or interesting. Usually, something becomes a meme when it gets
shared widely online, especially through social media. In this activity, you’ll make and spread your own
empower-memes to share a little digital positivity.

YOU WILL NEED:

Paper and drawing materials
Pictures from the challenge or magazines
Scissors
Editing apps (if virtual)

INSTRUCTIONS:
1. As a unit or on your own, share some of your favourite memes and think or talk about what makes
them memorable. Check out “Videos/Images” for inspiration.
2. Think about something meaningful in Guiding. If you could share one thing from the meeting with your
friends outside Guiding, what would it be? Create a one or two line statement about it.
3. Draw, take, or find and cut out a picture to go with your statement.
4. Add your statement around that picture to make it a meme.
5. Share your memes with your unit, with your friends and family, or online.

NOTE: If you want to post them on social media, check that your post matches up with Girl Guides’ Code
of Conduct and that if anyone else or their work is shown in the post, they’re comfortable with you sharing
it.

ACTIVITY #11 - COMMUNITY PHOTO MOSAIC

SPARKS BROWNIES GUIDES PATHFINDERS RANGERS LINK TREFOIL

PROGRAM PLATFORM UNIT'S OWN

PROGRAM AREAS: Life Stuff (Build Skills)

ESTIMATED TIME: 30 min - 1+ hr

DESCRIPTION:
In this activity, you’ll create a mosaic of photographs that show all the ways you’re connected. A mosaic is
a pattern or image created by bringing together smaller items. Grab photos from the Photo Scavenger
Hunt Challenge and create a physical or virtual mosaic.

YOU WILL NEED:

Physical Mosaic: Virtual Mosaic:
Poster board A picture collage app on a phone, computer, or tablet
Glue Example: Canva, Google Slides, Jam Board
Physical photos from the Challenge Virtual pictures from the Challenge

INSTRUCTIONS:
1. Decide what sort of photo mosaic you want to make – a digital or a physical one.
2. Brainstorm all the people in your community you could invite to participate in the mosaic. Think about
people who live in all sorts of neighbourhoods, work different jobs, own businesses or gather in
certain spaces (like places of faith, community centres, care centres, etc.)
3. Create an invitation for people to participate in the mosaic project. They’ll need to take or share a
picture of something they get from their community that they value, and/or something of value that
they give to their community (ideally, both!). In the invitation, you can include a description of the
project, where and how people can send you the pictures, and the deadline date for sending them
back.
4. Send or drop off the invitation to the places and people you’re inviting.
5. Once you have the pictures back, lay them out and take a look at what you’ve got. Do you notice any
themes? Are some common colours in most of the pictures or are there some pictures with colours
that stand out? Do you notice any categories emerging, like nature, people, animals or places?
6. Put your pictures together in a mosaic! You can create a pattern or shapes with the pictures or
organize them in a way that works for you.
7. Decide how you want to share your mosaic. Enjoy!
