TOPIC

An investigation on the use of commercial feed versus the use of indigenous feeds
(millet, rapoko and sorghum) on broiler chicken with reference to growth rate, carcass
weight and dressing percentage at Wanezi high school over a period of 8 weeks from
10 May to 28 June.

CERTIFICATION FORM

This certifies that l, the research supervisor Mr GC Moyo assisted in the project by
Belinda M Zhou on the research title. An elevation of the performance of broiler chicken
fed with commercial feeds versus those fed with indigenous feeds using adli-bitum
feeding rationing with reference to growth rate, carcass weight and dressing percentage
every week for a period of 8 weeks.

DEDICATION

I dedicate this project to my mother who gave me emotional support and introduced me
to farming and rearing and keeping broiler chickens. She introduced me to farming and
was my source of inspiration during the period when l carried out my project.

iii
ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS

l would like to thank my supervisor Mr G C Moyo for his guidance when l was carrying
out the project. l would also want to give thanks to my colleagues for their support and
encouragement is appreciated. I also give thanks to my family for introducing me to
broiler production and giving me the passion to do agriculture. I would also want to
acknowledge the school for its support and providing with resources for my project.

ABSTRACT

The researcher conducted a research study on the valuation of feeding commercial

feeds versus indigenous feeds on broiler production using adli- bitum feeding and
rationing with reference to weekly growth rate from the first week after arrival until
maturity at Wanezi High School. The experimental design used a deep litter system and
there was treatment A and treatment B. Then broilers were replicated 5 times per each
treatment i.e. treatment A was A1,A2,A3,A3,A4,A5 and treatment B was
B1,B2,B3,B4,B5. The chicks were almost of the same size and had almost the same
weight. A total number of 10 chicks were used and 5 chicks were assigned to treatment
A and 5 were assigned to treatment B .The researcher used objectives to assess the
performance of each treatment by measuring the growth rate weekly, carcass weight
and dressing percentage for 8 weeks. The data collected for each objective was
recorded and presented in form of graphs for data analysis. Feeding the broiler using
adli- bitum proved to be the best type of feeding because the broiler showed high
growth rate, carcass weight and dressing percentage due to the type of feeding. Hence l
encourages farmers around Insiza district to adopt adli-bitum feeding as it gives a high
turnover.
