a. Definition
- Based on the linguistic meaning, the word Wayang comes from the old Javanese
language, namely wod And yang.
- With the meaning of this word, it can be said that Wayang means a vague shadowy
form.
- Wayang is a puppet of a person made from carved leather or wood and so on
which can be used to play characters in traditional drama performances.
- Wayang is usually played by a person called a “dalang”

The widespread development of this art occurred during the Hindu-Buddhist period,
especially between 800 and 1500. According to myth, a prince named Aji Saka brought
aspects of Indian culture to Java. The long ritual opening of a puppet show celebrates
its arrival on the island. To which, Aji Saka came with hanacaraka, the Javanese
Sanskrit alphabet, which he then divided into four. The poetic language used by the
puppeteers in wayang songs and narratives was mixed with Sanskrit-based words.
