PROPERTIES OF

MATTER

Rian Fredrick Flores

8th grade -juniper
LEARNING OBJECTIVES

At the end of this lesson, the student shall be able to:

* Differentiate matter from non-matter

* Describe the properties of matter
* Distinguish intensive property from extensive property
MATTER
* anything around us which you can touch or can fill up space.
* based on observable characteristics like mass and volume.

* ex: vase,cellphone,book,wall,paper
air considered as matter because it has volume and takes up space
NON-MATTER
 * concepts and things that do not possess mass or take up physical space.
* typically do not carry a scent, nor can they be tasted or touched.

*ex: time,heat,sound,energy,sunlight,thoughts,emotions,and microwave

PROPERTIES OF MATTER

 * observable characteristics that describe a given example of matter like mass and volume
>> mass - amount or measure of matter present in an object
>> volume – space occupied by an object
* help you identify their uses
>> ex: food are also a kind of matter without which we cannot survive.
clothes that we wear, all the necessary things like pencil,brush,utensils.
.

 Each type of matter has different physical properties which can be observed
 or calculated.

EXTENSIVE PROPERTY
- DEPEND on the amount or quantity of material observed
- ex : mass,size,weight,length,volume,shape

INTENSIVE PROPERTY
- DO NOT DEPEND on the amount of material observed
- depends on the kind of material present in it
- ex : color,density,luster,odor,temperature,boiling point,freezing point,and chemical reactivity
