Lesson Content
1. Various techniques in separating mixtures : scooping, decantation and filtration
Lesson Competency
1. Demonstrate various techniques in separating mixtures, such as scooping, decantation,
and filtration.
Lesson Content Standard
Learners learn that…
1. Mixtures and the products of their separation techniques are very useful in our daily lives.
Performance Standard
By the end of the Quarter, learners demonstrate an understanding of the benefits of various
separation techniques. They demonstrate skills in the use of equipment.
Suggested Performance Task
A. Apply an appropriate separation technique to solve a local or household problem.
Learning across Curriculum
1) Mathematics - Understanding fractions and ratios can be applied when measuring and
mixing different components in separating mixtures.
2) Home Economics - Learning about food preparation and cooking involves separating
ingredients and components, which can relate to the techniques of separating mixtures in
Science.
Procedure
1. ELICIT
Your mother cooked a very delicious dish: adobo, where oil is an essential component that
adds flavor and richness to the dish. However, during the cooking process, you notice that an
excess of oil has floated on the surface of the adobo sauce, affecting the overall taste and
texture. How will you need to separate the oil from the adobo mixture effectively?
Expected answer:
First, allow the adobo to cool down slightly to facilitate the separation of oil from the sauce.
Next, carefully tilt the pot or container holding the adobo to one side, ensuring that the oil
collects on one end. Using a ladle or spoon, gently skim off the layer of oil floating on top of the
adobo sauce.
2. ENGAGE
Filtration Decantation
3. EXPLORE
Material: muddy water, filter paper or white cloth, beaker or glass container, funnel
Procedures:
Questions:
1. What happened to the muddy water after filtering?
2. Are there remains of solid on the filter paper? What about the water where did it go?
Materials: bowl water, sawdust, sand, rice, scoops, filter paper or cloth, containers,
Significance: Promotes teamwork and quick thinking while practicing separation techniques
Instructions:
1) Divide students into 3 groups.
2) Each team will have to separate a mixture using scooping, decantation, and filtering.
3) Team 2-3 members will take turns performing each technique in a relay format.
Procedure:
1. Mix together in one bowl the materials water, sawdust, sand, and rice.
2. Separate all the solid components from the water using three different techniques.
3. Put the removed solids into separate containers: sawdust, rice, and sand

Assessment Questions:
1) In order, write down the solid mixture which you removed from the water mixture.

2) Describe how you removed the sawdust, rice and sand from the water.
4. EXPLAIN
Filtration is the process of separating solid substances from a liquid through the use of a filter
paper or any cloths that can be used as a filtering medium. These solid residues are trapped
by the filter paper or cloth, which allow the liquid substances to pass through in the process.
Decantation- is a separation technique that involves pouring off a liquid from a mixture,
leaving the solid particles behind.
Procedure:
Allow the mixture to settle so that the solid particles settle at the bottom.
Carefully pour off the liquid, taking care not to disturb the settled solids.
Procedure:
Use a suitable tool (scoop, spoon, spatula) to physically lift and remove the solid component
from the mixture.
5. ELABORATE
Project-Based Learning
Task 1 - Students will create a step-by-step guide on how to separate a specific mixture of
their choice using one of the techniques learned.
6. EVALUATE
Instruction:
Demonstrate how you would separate a mixture of sand and water using all three techniques:
scooping, filtering and decantation.
Which among the three techniques (scooping, filtering and decantation) will you perform to
separate the mixture? Write the step-by step procedure in performing the technique chosen.
