evaporation.
Lesson Content Standard
Learners learn that…
1. Mixtures and the products of their separation techniques are very useful in our daily lives.
Performance Standard
By the end of the Quarter, learners demonstrate an understanding of the benefits of various
separation techniques. They demonstrate skills in the use of equipment.
Suggested Performance Task
A. Apply an appropriate separation technique to solve a local or household problem.

Learning across Curriculum

1. Mathematics - Understanding the concept of ratios and proportions in math can help
students calculate the proper mixtures for solutions before separating them in science
experiments

2. Language Arts - Studying literature can help students understand the idea of separating
themes and within a text, like how mixtures are separated in science.

Teaching Strategy: Discussion

The teacher asks: Have you tried cooking rice? How do you do it?
-Pupils will answer the steps:
1. Wash the rice.
2. Pour the water.
3. Add water and boil the pot until cooked.

Question:
1. Where did the water go when the rice was cooked? Explain.

Expected answer: The water evaporated because of the fire.

2. ENGAGE
The teacher shows the pupils a video that demonstrates the process of salt making:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X8xqZa9Mulk
How to make salt from sea water - YouTube

Questions:
1. How is the process of salt-making done?

3. EXPLORE

Activity 1: Separation Station

Teaching Strategy: Experiential Learning

Materials: Materials: salt, iron filings, plate, magnet

Significance: To allow students to physically separate mixtures using magnetism

Procedure:
1. Prepare the materials needed.
2. Combine the two substances, the salt and the iron filings.
3. Separate one substance to the other substance by using magnet to attract them.
4. What do you call the process of separating substance in a mixture using magnet?

Questions:
1. Which substance is attracted to magnet?
2. What do you call this substance?
3. What is the importance of separating substance?
4. How does the magnet attract the iron filings?
5. Why do some materials respond to magnets while others do not?

Expected answers:
1. iron fillings

2. magnetic / metallic
3. Separating the iron fillings removes impurities from the salt.

4. The attraction between a magnet and iron filings is due to the magnetic field produced by
the magnet. When iron filings come into contact with a magnetic field, they align themselves
along the magnetic field lines. This alignment creates a visible pattern, illustrating the shape
and strength of the magnetic field.

5. Materials respond to magnets based on their magnetic properties. The response is

determined by the kind of materials. Ferromagnetic materials, such as iron, cobalt, and nickel,
have a strong attraction to magnets. Paramagnetic materials, like aluminum and platinum,
also respond to magnets but to a much weaker extent. Non-magnetic materials, like wood,
plastic, and glass, do not respond to magnets.

Activity 3: Evaporating Solutions

Materials: Saltwater solution, heat source, container

Significance: To demonstrate the separation of salt from water through evaporation.

Instructions:
1. Heat the saltwater solution in a container.
2. Observe as the water evaporates, leaving behind salt crystals.
3. Record and report your observations.

Rubric:
- Successful separation of salt crystals - 10 pts
- Understanding of evaporation process - 5 pts
- Participation in discussion - 5 pts

Questions:
1) What happens to the water molecules during evaporation?
2) Why does salt remain in the container after the water evaporates?
3) How can the process of evaporation be used to obtain pure substances from mixtures?

Expected answers:

1. During evaporation, water molecules gain energy and change from a liquid state to a
gaseous state.

2. After all the water is evaporated, the mixture dried up and the salt remains in the container.

3. The process of evaporation can be used to obtain pure substances from mixtures by taking
advantage of the different boiling points of the components. Once the liquid is evaporated, the
mixtures are separated.

4. EXPLAIN

Teaching Strategy: Direct Instruction

Magnets are objects made of magnetic materials that produce a magnetic field. Magnets pull
other objects made of magnetic materials towards them. They will either attracts or repel other
magnets. Magnetic separation is the process of separating components of mixtures by using a
magnet to attract magnetic substances. The process that is used for magnetic separation
separates non-magnetic substances from those which are magnetic.

Evaporation occurs everyday, both in natural and manmade environments. Evaporation

occurs most often in the oceans around the world .One by product of evaporation can be used
to seas from the season your food. Salt is extracted from the seawater by allowing the water to
evaporate over long periods of time. The salt that gives salt water its saline taste is left behind.
Salt ponds evaporate slowly at normal temperatures. The salt left over from the evaporated
ponds is then used to make table salt.

Evaporation is the process by which water and other liquids changes from a liquid state to a
vapor or gas state. Evaporation is great for separating a mixture (solution) of a soluble solid
and a solvent. The process involves heating the solution until the solvent evaporates (turns
into gas) leaving behind the solid residue.

Day
5. ELABORATE

Lead the pupils to formulate generalization by asking:

How would you describe the process of separating mixtures through magnet?

How would you describe the process of separating mixture through evaporation using
the activity on making salt?

6. EVALUATE

Teaching Strategy: Problem-Based Learning

Andrea Rose wants to remove the staple wires on the rice that she will be cooking.
Using her knowledge on the process of separating mixtures she is using magnet to repel the
staple wire from the rice.
