Important Provinces in Telangana

Sakshi Education

Before independence there were 562 states in India. There are many institutions in

Telangana region as well. They emerged during the period of Kakatiyas, Qutubshahis and

Asafzahis. Among these, Atmakuru, Boravelli, Seernavelli, Dubbaka, Donthi, Domakonda,
Gadwala, Jataprolu, Palvancha, Papannapet and Narayanapuram are the main ones. After

the military action, along with the Nizam's state, they were merged into the Indian nation.

The role of institutions in the formation of Telangana culture and literary development
cannot be forgotten. In Telangana the principalities played the role played by the Nayaka
kings in the Andhra region.

Atmakuru Sansthanam
The area of Atmakuru Sansthanam of Mahbubnagar district is 190 sq. km. Its first capital
was Tivudampally. When Gonabuddha Reddy, the ruler of Vardhamanapuram went to
Tirupati, Gopalareddy of Chandragiri provided him with all facilities. Impressed by
Gopalareddy's hospitality, Buddha Reddy appointed him to the post of Gowda on
Magatalanadu. He can be said to be the founder of this organization. His youngest son
Chinagopireddy helped the Bahmani Sultans in the wars. As a result, he got the posts of
Nad Gowda, Sarnada Gowda, Deshmukh, Deshpandya and Desaigiri in Muzaffar Pargana.
Chinagopireddy's grandson is the second Gopireddy. He was a contemporary of Abdullah
Qutub Shah. The second Gopireddy got the Jagir of Allipuram from Qutub Shah.
Gopireddy's brother Saheb Reddy. Qutbshah allowed Saheb Reddy to rule Kadechuru and
Magatala Seema. Sarvareddy ruled this institution after Gopireddy. Sarvareddy's grandson
is the second Sarvareddy. He helped Aurangzeb in the wars and got Duppalli jagir. His son,
the first Timmareddy, later ruled the kingdom. Timmareddy's grandson is the second Saheb
Reddy. He helped the Asafzahis in their invasions of Karnataka and earned the title of
'Savairaja'. Peda Venkata Reddy belongs to the seventh generation after the second Saheb
Reddy in this clan. He helped Nizam King Sikinderza in wars. In return, Amarachinta and
Vaddemanu received the title of Parganas. He shifted the capital from Thivudampalli to
Atmakur. Peda Venkata Reddy was succeeded by his son Balakrishna Reddy and grandson
Sombhupal Rao. Sombhupala Rao got Amarchinta and Vaddemanu parganas as bilmakhta
in perpetuity. Sombhupala's son was Raja Sitarambhupala Rao. His son Savairaja
Ramabhupala Rao Balwant Bahadur ruled the kingdom. He undertook many structures
useful to the people. After his death his wife Bhagyalakshmamma got administrative

permission from the Nizam. It was during her time that this institution was merged into

Hyderabad state.

Narayanapuram and Rajapet

were small principalities of Nalgonda district which did not have their own powers. During
the
 time of Nizam Ulmulk, a robber used to commit atrocities in Gatuppal area of Nalgonda

district. A man named Manchal Reddy killed the thief and got Narayanapuram area as a
reward. His brother Somireddy was appointed Narayanapuram Patel. Later Manchal
Reddy's son Rayan Reddy became the ruler. He captured a vassal king who defied the
Nizam. Appreciated by this action, the Nizam honored him by giving him the titles
Sarmannewar, Sardeshmukh, Sardeshpande and Sarnadagowda. Later he gave him
authority over the Parganas of Rachakonda, Bhuvanagiri, Adivari, Shadnagar, Narsikonda,
Indurthi, Indriyala and Ibrahimpatnam.
Rayan Reddy built Rajapet fort in 1775. In 1782 his son Vedire Venkata Narayana Rao
became the ruler. He founded the Narayanapuram Sansthanam. His son, Rayanna Mir Laik
Ali, studied with greats like Salarjung. He embraced Islam. He has six wives. Only one
daughter was born to the last wife Hussain Begum. Her name is Zahirunnisa Begum. She is
the last ruler of this institution. The villages of Kurraram, Namile, Masaipet, Korukonda,
Pedapadu, Saduvelli, Challur, Venkiryala and Rajapet were within the limits of Rajapet
Sansthanam.

Papannapet Sansthanam
Papannapet is the oldest sansthanam. It was once the largest of all the kingdoms. The
entire district of Medak was included in this institution. B. N. Shastri said that the history of
the institution is known since the reign of Rani Shankaramma. Suravaram Prathapareddy
also wrote the history of this institution in Golconda Patrika. Only Rani Shankaramma and
Sadashiva Reddy are mentioned in it. In the later period, the history of this institution came
to some light through some texts.
The Chidire clans are the royal priests of this institution. Chidire Lakshmanasastri, who
belonged to this lineage, wrote a history of the institution in 1928-29. For this purpose Ma
Purva Vamsavali written by Rani Lingayamma, Ma Vamsa Chirithi written in Urdu by Raja
Venkata Narasimha Reddy, Ma Sansthana Chirithi by Venkatadvari, Lingayamma Chirithi;

Tirumalacharya's Shauryarajya Vamsavali, Mudigonda Ramakrishna's poet Srimajjoginatha

Charitra is based on the texts. Along with these, he also considered the things said by their
ancestors.
 Suravaram, Biruduraja gave the manuscript of Lakshmanasastri Sansthan
history to Ramaraja. But due to some reasons it was not recovered. Based on the draft in

his possession, he published the History of the Kings of Medak in 1979-80. Mudunga Ranga
Krishnamacharyu
 wrote the books 'Andol-Jogipet' in 2006-07 and 'Shauryaveerya Reddy
Trio' in 2012.
The history of the kings of Papannapet Sansthan is dealt with under various names such as
History of Andol Kings, History of Medak Kings, History of Rangampet. Ananta Reddy was
one of the Kakatiya soldiers. After the fall of the Kakatiya Kingdom, he came to Kalpaguru
near Sangareddy and settled down. He helped the rulers of that time and got Kalpaguru
pargana from them. He is the founder of this clan. Later his grandson Raminedu was
crowned in 1398 according to the history of Medak written by Andol Tahsildar. Raminedu
built Andol fort. In 1418 Andol was made the capital. Kondapur, Omkarapuram, Potan
Chervu (Patan Lake), Telanganapuram, Rudraram, Metuku, Kapala, Atinagaram, Dakur etc.
were part of his kingdom. Later Bhuvanagiri, Nizampet, Chandampet, Devarakonda,
Narsapur, Daultabad and other areas also became a part of his kingdom.
After Raminedu, Musala Reddy, Peddar Reddy, Allamaiah Chowdhury, Ramireddy, Pratthi
Sadashiva Reddy, Peddaranasimha Reddy, Lingayamma, Lingareddy and others ruled this
institution. During the reign of Ramadurga Venkata Narasimha Reddy (1720-60), the extent
of this institution decreased and became a small institution. Narasimha Reddy saw
Shankaramma's prowess and married her. After the death of Narasimha Reddy,
Sankaramma had to take over the administration of the institution. But due to a conspiracy,
the second Lingayamma became the queen. She ruled the kingdom from 1760-64. The
Peshwas of Maharashtra invaded the Nizam's kingdom. But Shankaramma defeated them
with his mighty powers. So the Nizam gave her the title Raibhagan (lion-like queen) and
appointed her as the queen. Shankaramma who came to power in 1764 rebuilt the
kingdom. She built Sangareddy after her father and Rajampet after her mother. She built
Shankarampet in her name and Papannapet in the name of Mirelli Papanna. She is a great
warrior and a good administrator. There are many folk tales and heroic tales in the name of
Shankaramma. That is why historians compare her with Rudramadevi and Ahlyabai.
Shankaramma built many ponds for agricultural development. She was a great reformer.

Neerudi Papanna, a Dalit, was made Dalapati.

Shankaramma had no children. So she adopted a poor boy, Sadashiva Reddy. She died in
1774.
 With this, Sadashivareddy came to the kingdom. Somanatha Bhupalu, ruler of
Gadwala, was impressed by his bravery. So he gave him his daughter Parvati in marriage.

Sadashivareddy also helped Nizam Ali Khan (second Asafzah) in defeating the Maratha
Peshwas.
 Akbar Ali was the eldest son of Nizam Ali Khan. He rebelled against his father
and sought the help of Sadashivareddy and Galibjung. Sadashivareddy won three battles on
this occasion. But he was defeated in the final battle and killed. Later his wife Parvati came
to power. Raja Ramachandra Reddy Bahadur was the last ruler of this institution. It was
during his time that Papannapet State was merged with Hyderabad State.

Vanaparthi Sansthanam
Vanaparthi Sansthanam in Mahabubnagar district is one of the biggest sansthanams in
Telangana. This institution is rich in literature. There were 124 villages under it. They were
called Nuguru colonists because they ruled from Nuguru as their capital. Their ancestors
belonged to Nandyas. Janumpalli Veerakrishna Reddy was the founder of this organization.
The fourth generation of this family was Vemadi Venkata Reddy(1625-53). He helped
Abdullah Qutub Shah in conquering Nellore and Udayagiri Durga. Ashtabhasha Gopala Rao
is famous in this clan. He is the second son of Venkata Reddy. Gopala Rao was the first
person to get the title of Bahari in this clan. He is famous in 8 languages. He wrote the
poem Ramachandrodayam and the Sanskrit text Banam. Gopala Rao ruled the Jataprolu
Sansthanam for two years on behalf of the Minjanib government. His adopted son was the
third Venkata Reddy. The Sultan of Delhi gave him the title of Sawai. Venkata Reddy
founded the Gopalapeta monastery in the name of his father.
He included 12 villages in the Nuguru kingdom and appointed his brother Ranga Reddy as
its ruler. During this period the condition of the Mughals deteriorated. In addition, Venkata
Reddy evaded tax. The Sultan's army attacked him. Venkata Reddy, defeated in this attack,
committed suicide in 1711. The Nuguru Sikkas (coins) minted during Gopal Rao's time
brought great fame to the institution. But because of 'Nooguru Vetti' this institution became
disreputable. A later notable figure in this dynasty was the first Ramakrishna Rao (1807-
1822). He changed the institution to Vanaparthi. The Nizam gave him the title of Raja
Bahadur in 1817. He is a good scholar. Many fakirs were his friends.

Raja Rameswara Rao is the most famous of all in this institution. Modern feelings are good

in him. Recognizing the need for English education, Rameswara Rao went to Madras and
learned
 English. In 1802 he measured the revenue settlement land and put the survey
numbers. He introduced the system of giving degrees to farmers. This is the first institute in

Telangana to give degrees to farmers. Reforms were undertaken here before Salarjung.
That
 is why the armed struggle did not have an impact here. Raja Rameswara Rao is ready

for an inter-caste love marriage. Nizam got the post of Sarvanayaksha by introducing
modern principles in the institution. The British gave him the title of 'His Highness'. During
the reign of Rameswara Rao III, this institution was merged into Hyderabad State.

Gadwala Sansthanam
Gadwala Sansthanam spread in the middle of Krishna-Tungabhadra rivers in Mahbubnagar
district. It is bounded by Alampur taluka on the east and Raichur district on the west. There
were 360 villages in this institution. This institution, which is famous in Telangana, also
collected bribes from the Nawabs of Kurnool.

Buddha Reddy is the progenitor of the Gadwala institution. During the time of Kakatiya
Prataparudra, he got the rights to rule over Raichur, Alampur, Aija etc. Peda Soma Bhupal
came to power after him. He was called Sobhanadri. Gadwal fort was built by him. Peda
Sombhupala was famous among all these colonists. He is a great poet. He wrote Gita
Govinda. Kanadam Peddanna, known as Abhinava Peddanna, sheltered many poets like
Somayaji. His grandson China Sombhupala was also a great poet. He translated Rati
Shastra. He created Ashtapadas as Yakshaganas. He sheltered poets like Kanadam
Peddana, Ramacharya, Gargeyapuri Subbasastri, Kamasamudram Appalacharya and
others. During his time, the reputation of the institution was ironed. The last ruler of the
institution was Adilakshmi Devamma. She married her eldest daughter to the ruler of
Domakonda. Gadwal State was merged with Hyderabad State on 17 September 1949.

Boravelli Sansthanam
It is a small Sansthanam in Mahbubnagar district. Their family name is Mushtipalli. In
course of time, Boravelli and Gadwala were merged into the state. Renowned poet Venkata
Reddy gave shelter to the famous poet Chintalapalli Chhayapati. Chhayapati dedicated the

essay Raghavabhyudayam to Keshavaswamy, the patron saint of the state.

Munagala
 Sansthanam
This Sansthanam is located on the borders of Krishna and Nalgonda districts. On the other

side it is bordered by Khammam district. There were 40 villages in this pargana. This
pargana
 was also treated as Zamindari and Sansthanam. Its capital is Nadigudem. This
state was a part of Telangana before 1766. Later it became a part of Krishna district. In
1959 it was merged into Nalgonda district.

Nizam's kingdom was around Munaga and Lingagiri parganas. These two zamins under the
British administration were like islands in the Nizam's kingdom. The people of these
parganas had relations with the Nalgonda district of the Nizam region. The whole culture
and way of doing business was similar to this Nizam region. The clans of Garlapati
(Warangal), Keesara (Khammam) and Nayani (Warangal) who ruled this institution were
from Telangana. Therefore, this state can be said to be an integral part of Telangana.

During the last period of the first Qutbshah, Garlapati clans were the desai of Munagala
pargana. Details about the founder of this dynasty are not known. But it seems about
Ellappa and Nagappa belonging to this clan. Ayanna Desai belongs to their later period. He
ruled between 1652-93. Ayyanna came to power and the debt burden increased. So in 1687
he sold half of the pargana to Golconda merchants named Siddalur Venganna and
Ramappa. After the death of Ayyanna Desai's son, his wife Subhadra Devi took care of the
affairs of the pargana. At the same time the Keesaras used to farm in Munagala pargana.
They used to take pargana from Garlapati and pay Ijara. Subhadra Devi's brother
Mukundappa. According to the records of the pargana, he helped Aurangzeb in suppressing
a revolt that broke out in 1693 and obtained a Sanad. During the time of Qutub Shahis, the
Munaga dynasty was ruled by the Garlapati dynasty. It seems that during the Mughal rule,
the Keesara dynasty began to rule in this state.

Repala was the first capital of Keesara family. Later the capital was shifted to Shiripura. The
Asafzahis came to power in Golconda while these clans were ruling. In 1756, Salabat Jung
ceded the northern kingdoms to the French. But the second Asafza Nizam Ali who came to

power in 1766 handed over these governments to the British. With this, Munagala and

Lingagiri Parganas came under the control of the British. In 1802, Zamindari system was
introduced
 in this state. The Peshkush used to collect taxes and give them to the British.
This kingdom was successively ruled by Keesara Venkata Narasimha Rao, Mukundappa,

Narasanna, Kodanda Ramaiah (1814), Venkata Narasimha Rao (1818), Gopamma,
Lacchamma.
 Later Nayani Venkata Ranga Rao (1900) got the post of Raja of Munagala in
this institution. He appointed Komarraju Venkata Lakshmana Rao as Diwan. Due to the
influence of national movement, Munaga Raja had more idealism. Ravichettu Ranga Rao
and Komarraju Venkata Lakshmana Rao started Srikrishna Devarayandhra Bhasha Nilayam
in Hyderabad in 1901. Rajarajanarendra Bhasha Nilayam was established in Hanmakonda
in 1904 and Vigyana Chandrika Mandali in Secunderabad in 1905.
Munagala Raja appointed Akili Chenchu Ramaiah to give advice and instructions in
educational matters, Ganeswara Rao to build buildings, and Pingali Venkaiah to develop
agricultural and industrial sectors in the state. Venkaiah traveled to Japan, Cambodia and
other countries. He studied the agricultural and industrial methods of the respective
countries and introduced new agricultural methods in the state. Munagala Ranga Rao
gradually drifted away from idealism. In the meantime there were rebellions in the province.
In 1930 the Karana Rebellion started. It transformed into a peasant revolt. King Munagala
suppressed them ruthlessly. In 1947, Munaga State was merged with Madras State. It was
merged with Nalgonda district in 1959 after the formation of Andhra Pradesh.

Sahitya Seva
This institution gives priority to Sahitya Seva. Kodati Narsimharao was the court poet in this
institution. Nandikesvara Shastri wrote a treatise called 'Sivatattvasudhanidhi'. It describes
the history of Nayani's clan.
