SOCIETAL CHANGE: TO FATHOM AI

AND MACHINE LEARNING
I. INTRODUCTION

Artificial intelligence (AI) refers to the system of computers that can perform complex tasks

such as solving problems, reasoning, and making decisions. According to Khaleel, Ahmed, and

Alsharif (2023), Artificial Intelligence technology offers designers a range of tools and methods

that can automate tasks in design, accelerate the design process, and enhance the precision and

efficiency of design outcomes. The processes of these are centered around human expertise,

utilizing scientific, intuitive, experiential, and creative methods.

Machine Learning is one of the AI methods that help individuals to make the work easier

and convenient. It is helpful for complicated tasks like pattern recognition, sound and image

recognition, and natural language processing given that it finds patterns and similarities within the

data set to understand future data. There are certain similarities and differences in the

interpretability between statistical learning and machine learning, which are used by modern

machine learning algorithms to comprehend and analyze data. The challenge of interpreting

results in machine learning is heightened by the lack of a straightforward, linear relationship

between input and output variables. On the other hand, statistical learning is most effective for

problems where there are linear relationships between input data (independent variables) and

output (dependent variables), as seen in linear and logistic regression. Its notable explainability

stems from its capability to discern the impact of changes in independent variables on the

dependent variable (Khaleel, Ahmed, & Alsharif, 2023).

Furthermore, even though an activity requires human skill, a computer can complete it just

as well or even better than a human could. This means that activities that were once needed by

humans may now be completed by computers, robots, machines, or artificial intelligence, which

can provide humans with the information they need in a matter of seconds—which paved way to

be used in many fields, such as engineering, education, healthcare, transportation, economics,

law, and manufacturing.

the world are using AI algorithms to evaluate sensor data from infrastructure assets including

buildings, bridges, and roads in order to improve structural integrity evaluations and enable

predictive maintenance. In addition, the design and construction of civil engineering projects are

being improved with the use of AI-driven optimization algorithms, which reduce costs and increase

efficiency. Additionally, students are using AI-powered models to assess risk and suggest

adaptive actions, which are a critical part of strengthening the resilience of infrastructure systems

to natural catastrophes and climate change.

In the Philippines, the use of AI and ML in civil engineering is becoming increasingly

popular, however at a slightly slower rate than in other nations with better developed technology.

However, a number of important programs and projects that demonstrate the possible influence

of these technologies locally are now under progress. For instance, engineers and educators in

the Philippines are investigating the application of AI algorithms for the monitoring and upkeep of

infrastructure, especially in metropolitan regions vulnerable to earthquakes and flooding. These

AI-driven solutions can assist in identifying critical infrastructure weaknesses and prioritizing

maintenance activities by evaluating sensor data and historical records, eventually enhancing

resilience and safety.

The Philippines is embracing AI and ML technologies in various sectors, particularly in

healthcare and finance. AI-driven tools are improving patient care and medical diagnostics, while

chatbots and telemedicine platforms provide remote healthcare services. The government is

recognizing the potential of AI and ML for economic growth and innovation, with initiatives like the

National AI Roadmap promoting their adoption. This growth is aimed at addressing local

challenges and driving sustainable development.

Some of the examples include:

"CareBot," uses sophisticated machine learning algorithms to understand and adjust to

the individual wants and preferences of every user, offering customized support based on their

specific demands. CareBot can recognize objects and situations because of its sensors and

cameras, which allow it to do a variety of jobs including bringing things, helping with housework,

and reminding people about appointments and medicines. Through ongoing analysis of human

DE BELEN, DELA CRUZ, E., DELA CRUZ, I., DELA CRUZ, J., DELOS REYES 8

interactions and feedback, the robot's artificial intelligence algorithms are able to better predict

the demands of its users and enhance its performance over time.

Sophia, a humanoid robot developed by Hanson Robotics and activated in 2016, is

renowned for its sophisticated facial expressions, natural language processing capabilities, and

ability to engage in human conversations. Developed using Frubber, a soft rubber mimicking

human skin, Sophia is equipped with cameras, sensors, and AI algorithms. Despite her lifelike

appearance, her AI is limited compared to human intelligence. Sophia's potential applications

include customer service, education, and healthcare, but it raises questions about the future of

human-robot interaction, ethics, and the boundaries between artificial and human intelligence.

IV. IMPLICATION OF ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE AND MACHINE LEARNING TO THE

ENGINEERING FIELD

AI and Machine Learning has already made its way into our lives, be it a positive impact

or a negative one. We cannot deny its big presence in our world. Ranging from a larger

perspective down to the specific effects, it has numerous possible implications that we have to

focus on.

Starting with the negative implications of AI and machine learning, some examples are

data breaches, cyberattacks, and election meddling. In line with this, many individuals and

organizations are also concerned with its effect on our privacy, national security, democracy, and

ethics. All of these are predicted to happen in the near future. In particular, democracy is said to

be greatly affected by the digital revolution. The same social network we are using today allowed

the political operatives and governments to interfere with elections, spread disinformation, and

spread hatred to ethnic minorities. Thus, negatively affecting our democracy and it can happen

anytime and anywhere.

This can also affect Civil Engineers on many levels. First is the job displacement it will cause.

According to the World Economic Forum, 85 million jobs globally could be potentially displaced

by AI technologies by the year 2025. Furthermore, there is a high chance of engineers being over

reliant on using AI-generated design without understanding the principles behind it due to its

convenience and speed. Lastly, it is predicted that in the next decades to come, there will be an

DE BELEN, DELA CRUZ, E., DELA CRUZ, I., DELA CRUZ, J., DELOS REYES 9
LITE MATTERS 2023-2024

expansion on what tasks that machines can do better than humans and it is because of the fast

advancement of computer power and artificial intelligence.

On the other side of the coin, we cannot deny the positive implications of AI and Machine

Learning. Enhancing productivity, improving healthcare, and revolutionizing many industries are

few examples of the good effect of AI. Moreover, its effect on operational efficiency of

organizations due to the use of AI in customer service, financial services, and manufacturing is

undeniable. Besides this, it can also help our society achieve its utmost potential in transportation

by analyzing the real-time traffic data and minimize congestion and reduce travel time. However,

there is an enormous potential of AI in education. It can offer personalized and individualized

teaching to improve the learning outcomes by analyzing the student’s data and categorizing their

strengths, weaknesses, and learning styles. It can also provide real-time feedback to the students

to keep them on track with their studies and be engaged in learning.

As we know, the engineering profession is influenced by AI. One of the most impressive

applications of AI in engineering is its ability to enhance engineering simulations and analyses’

accuracy and speed. Algorithms of Machine Learning can easily identify trends and patterns that

are difficult for humans to see and detect. Thus, helping engineers develop efficient and better

solutions. Furthermore, AI-enabled sensors can predict when a structure, machine, and

equipment will fail. It will enhance proactive measures, safety, and its lifespan. One example of

AI and ML is 3D printing. It has the ability to create prototypes quickly and cost-effectively, so

engineers can iterate designs when improving a plan and finding faults and alternatives to it.

There are endless possibilities of AI and machine learning in engineering, and some additional

impacts of it are automation of engineering tasks, expertise augmentation, robotics, energy

optimization, and environmental impact analysis.

In truth, AI is involved in our lives more than what people think. It already has, can, and

will redefine society and it has the ability to change the trajectory of the future. We need to adopt

a balanced approach with AI, with careful consideration and right skill and mindset.

V. CONCLUSION/ SUMMARY

Numerous changes—both beneficial and negative—have happened as a result of the

prominence of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML) in our day and age. The

aforementioned technologies' global discoveries have impacted people's daily lives, including

those related to careers, activities, and education. Additionally, as time goes on, more talented

inventors will undoubtedly improve the AI and ML of today.

The application of AI and Machine Learning in this digital age can be found in the following

areas: design and simulation, including 3D printing; process optimization; predictive maintenance

and fault detection; engineering work simplification through AI; energy management; safety and

risk management through AI; and enhanced teamwork and communication. The stated

conveniences that AI and ML have brought about may yet grow as human knowledge and

programming abilities advance. In fact, these inventions will never be brought into this society

without human knowledge.

Consequently, these trends can also be used effectively and efficiently in the engineering

industry. This made room for the software developed by qualified engineers to meet the needs of

the local population and the environment. Further, as civil engineering progresses, it becomes a

crucial component of engineering, helping to design buildings, dams, and other large structures

in addition to solving complex engineering problems that cannot be solved with conventional

design, electrical, communication, or renewable energy methods. AI can also operate with

ambiguous design parameters which enable the design, analysis, and redesign phases of the

engineering process to function independently.

Fundamentally, Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning, along with their numerous

developed functions, machinery, software applications, and services, have become an integral

part of human existence because they allow society to fully benefit from digitalization. In contrast,

social lives may be substantially altered when both AI and ML take the place of people and in-

person meetings, thereby reducing the necessity for in-person interactions. In any case, both

were intended to gradually expand worldwide so that they may be employed and enabled to

provide assistance for humanity through modernization.
