Course Title: Physics ( last of submission: 05/03/2024)

1. An object undergoing simple harmonic motion takes 0.25 s to travel from one point of zero velocity to the next
such point. The distance between those points is 36 cm. Calculate the (i) period, (ii) frequency, and (iii) amplitude
of the motion.

2. An oscillator consists of a block attached to a spring (k = 400 N/m). At some time t, the position (measured from
the system’s equilibrium location), velocity, and acceleration of the block are x = 0.100 m, v = -13.6 m/s, and a =
-123 m/s2. Calculate (i) the frequency of oscillation, (ii) the mass of the block, and (iii) the amplitude of the
motion.

3. A body executes SHM such that its velocity at mean position is 1m/s and acceleration at one extremity is
1.57m/s2. Calculate time period of oscillation.

4. A particle executes SHM of amplitude 5m when the particle is 3m from its mean position, its acceleration is
found to be 48m/s2. Find (i) velocity (ii) time period and (iii) maximum velocity.

5. A body of mass 500 gm is suspended from a spring of negligible mass and it stretches the spring by 7 cm. For a
displacement of 3 cm it is given a downward velocity 40 cm/s. Calculate (i) the spring constant, (ii) the angular
frequency, (iii) the time period (iv) the initial potential energy, (v) the initial kinetic energy, and (vi) the amplitude
of the ensuing motion of the spring.

6. Draw the phase difference diagram for the waves: (i) y2 = A sin(ωt- ), y1=A sin ωt; (ii) y2 = A sin(ωt+ ), y1 =
A sinωt; (iii) y1 = A sin(ωt+ , y2 = A sin(ωt+ ); (iv) y1 = A sin(ωt+ ), y2 = A sin(ωt- ) and (v) y1 = A
sin(ωt- ), y2 = A sin(ωt+ ).

7. A spring is mounted horizontally with its left-end stationery. The spring constant is k=200 N/m and mass m=0.5
kg. This time we give the body an initial displacement of 0.015 m/s and an initial velocity of 0.40 m/s. (i) Find out
the period, amplitude, and phase constant of the motion. (ii) Write equations for the displacement, velocity, and
acceleration as a function of time.

8. At a certain harbor, the tides cause the ocean surface to rise and fall a distance d (from highest level to lowest
level) in simple harmonic motion, with a period of 12.5 h. How long does it take for the water to fall a distance
0.250d from its highest level?

9. In oscillatory circuit L= 0.4h, C = 0.0020μF. What is maximum value of resistance(R) for the circuit to be
oscillatory?
10. For a damped oscillator m =250gm, k = 85N/m and b = 70gm/s. (a) What is the period of the motion? (b) How
long does it take for the amplitude of the damped oscillations to drop to half its initial value?

11. A damped harmonic oscillator consists of a block m = 0.1×(last two digits of you ID)kg, a spring k = (sum of last
two digits of your ID) N/m, and a damping force (F) Initially, it oscillates with an amplitude of 25.0 cm; because
of the damping, the amplitude falls to half of this initial value at t=5s. (a) What is the value of b? (b) what is life
time of oscillation?
12. In a spring mass system, the block has a mass of 1.50 kg and the spring constant is 8.00 N/m and b = 230 g/s.
The block is pulled down 12.0 cm and released. What is the amplitude oscillation end of 20 cycles?
