2 Exam Paper IB Algebra and Functions Cubic curves

Syllabus: IB(SL) Questions: 6 Time: 48 minutes Total Marks: 39

This paper contains a set of questions followed by the corresponding mark schemes. The time you
should spend on each question together with its worth in marks is also given. The content of this
paper is based on material from a wide selection of national and international examination boards
and organisations.

You are advised to have:

a set of geometrical equipment, pen, HB pencil, eraser. Check if you are allowed a calculator.
Some examinations, but not all, allow calculators, including graphical models.

NOTES: The following browsers have been tested with this facility: Mozilla Firefox, Microsoft Internet Explorer and Google Chrome.

Microsoft Internet Explorer (IE) was tested on versions 9 to 11 IE8 and earlier are no longer officially supported by MathsNet.

The latest versions of Google Chrome have a customised print preview which allows you to easily adjust the margins and whether or not
headings are printed. Best results are when the background printing of images and colours is enabled (not available in Chrome).

Many of the questions use the jsMath applet. This requires special fonts to be installed for successful printing. These fonts can be
downloaded from: http://www.math.union.edu/~dpvc/jsMath/. Use the Download the TeX fonts option. Full instructions for their use can
be found at: http://pubpages.unh.edu/~jsh3/jsMath/

MathsNet is available on annual subscription, where you will find 11,945 pages of content, including 4,817 interative questions that can be

Factorise completely the function f (x) where

f (x) = x3 − 8x2 + 15x

Q3 ID: 645 [13 marks, 16 minutes]

(a) On the same axes sketch the graphs of the

curves with equations
y = x2 (x − 2)
y = x(12 − x)
and give the coordinates of all the points where the
curves cross the x-axis.
(b) Use algebra to find the coordinates of the points
where the graphs intersect.

Q4 ID: 5634 [5 marks, 6 minutes]

(a) Expand and simplify (x − 6)(x + 9)(x + 5).

(b) Give the coordinates of the points where the
curve y = (x − 6)(x + 9)(x + 5) crosses the axes.

Q5 ID: 5663 [3 marks, 4 minutes]

Q6 ID: 7041 [10 marks, 12 minutes]

You are given that f (x) = (x + 2)(x − 2)(x − 2).

(a) Show that f (x) = x3 − 2x2 − 4x + 8.
2
(b) The graph of y = f (x) is translated by .
0
State an equation for the resulting graph. You need not simplify your answer.
(c) Find the coordinates of the point at which the resulting graph crosses the y-axis.
(d) Show that 1 is a root of x3 − 2x2 − 4x + 8 = 3.
(e) Hence solve this equation completely, giving the other roots in surd form.
