1. SAFETY INSTRUCTIONS

Use As Originally Intended

The measuring system and its connected mechanical components are designed for
weighing and controlling tasks.

Sources of Danger
No danger originates from the measuring system itself, if it is properly installed and
commissioned. However, danger can arise from transit of material to be weighed
(e.g. from auxiliaries used to handle or feed material) or if system assumes control
tasks.

Residual risks may originate from the measuring system if unskilled operators im-
properly handle the system. The measuring system can be part of a more complex
plant. The user is fully responsible for the overall plant safety.

Identification of Residual Risks

The presence of this symbol indicates that the machine or component used has the
potential to cause severe injury or death.

The presence of this symbol indicates that the machine or component used has the
potential to cause damage to the measuring system or other plant sections.

Personnel
Only skilled persons may exclusively perform preparation, installation, commission-
ing, operation, maintenance and servicing.

All persons working on the measuring system are required to observe the safety
hints and know the parts of the technical documentation relevant to their work.

The supervisor is responsible for instructing his operators to observe all regulations
and instructions given.

Parameter Changes
The measuring system’s functionality is determined by parameters, which must ex-
clusively be changed by persons familiar with the measuring system operating prin-
ciples. Parameters incorrectly set may cause injuries or damage to the machine
whenever a user control system is connected. They can also adversely affect
weighing operation.

Password
Software parameters are protected from unintended change by password. The
measuring system user has to ensure safe password handling.

WA-900+ Product Family DE023031.EN V1.3

INSTALLATION MANUAL Page 7

Error Message Acknowledgement

Error messages may be acknowledged only after cause of fault has been remedied.

Before you acknowledge an error message, check to see that connected peripher-
als properly operate. Check to see that connected control systems, if any, are in fail-
safe state.

Maintenance and Repair

During maintenance and repair, observe any warning symbols on the scale.

Before performing work on the mechanical system or peripherals (particularly the

control system), disconnect the measuring system and protect the system from in-
advertent restart.

Before performing work on the electrical equipment, disconnect the power supply.

Moisture Protection
Protect all system parts, electrical items in particular, from moisture (e.g. during
maintenance and servicing) when housings are open. Observe housing protection
standards.

Constructional Changes
Unauthorized modifications to the system and/or use of replacement parts not sup-
plied by manufacturer voids manufacturer’s liability for any resulting damages. This
particularly applies to modifications, which have the potential to affect the operating
safety of the measuring system.

Replacement
Always use the genuine spare parts supplied by manufacturer. If other makes are
used, the warranty will be void.

2. GENERAL

Designed as local analog-to-digital converter unit for WA-view, WA-900 is mounted

near the scale and enables the measuring signal to be digitally transferred to WA-
view free from interference. In addition, the load cells signals can be recorded indi-
vidually. This eases calibration (‘digital corner adjustment’) and permits the single
measurement value transducers to be monitored during operation.

Note: When connecting a multi stranded cable (also soldered) to screw connector,
a wire pin must be used!

3.5. Warning about electrical welding

All electrical welding jobs in close to weighing instrument should be made be-
fore installation of load cells. If welding is necessary after the load cells are
installed and connected to the weight indicator the following measures must
be carried out:

1. Disconnect each individual load cell cable from the junction box or WA-900
unit.

2. Remove the load cells from welding area if it is possible.

If the load cells cannot be removed, place the earthing electrode of the
welding apparatus so close to the weld as possible and unconditionally
so that welding current does not run through the load cells.

connection board is located below the mainboard. Main board has to be removed to
access load cell connection board.

3.7. Different load cell cable connection types

Each load cell is connected to its own channel. This type connection allows auto-
matic corner adjustment. Figure 10.

It is possible to connect more load cells to one channel of the WA-900+, load cell
parallel connection, Figure 11. Corner adjustment is done with resistors in the con-
nection box. Take care when more load cells are connected to one channel, load
impedance may not be less than 43Ω.

4.2.3. VPB 8020 Jumpers

Jumper W100 must be at position2-3.

Bus termination can be activated with jumpers W150, W151 and W152.

4.2.4. Profibus-DP Bus terminating

The first and last units on the PROFIBUS-DP fieldbus have to have a bus termina-
tion. You can do this by setting jumpers W150, W151 and W152 to 1-2. At position
2-3 bus is not terminated.

If the last actively terminated slave is removed from the bus, this may cause the en-
tire bus to disturbed. This fault occurs particularly often when using alternating
scales. This problem can be avoided by using a separate active bus termination.

4.2.5. Profibus-DP Address settings

Bus address is set with WA-plan PC program.

4.2.6. Profibus-DP cable

For hints on external wiring and troubleshooting, see, for instance, “Profibus Guide-
line” of Profibus User Organization (PNO).

At normal application 2-wire cable is used. Both signals RxD/TxD are connected.
DGND and VP are not connected.

4.2.7. Profibus-DP .gsd file

GSD-file is supplied in WA-900 Series Documents CD.

GSD-file name is BXP10C9A.gsd.

4.3. DeviceNet module VCB 8020

WA-900+ unit can be connected to DeviceNet fieldbus with VCB 8020 module.

Figure 16. VCB 8020 connectors and jumpers.

The W100 jumper must be plugged in position 2-3.

Module VCB 8020 is equipped with two bus connectors. Use connector XC3 on
WA-900+.

4.3.1.1. DeviceNet Bus termination

The bus termination resistors must be activated at the first and last station of the
bus. This is done by applying the W160 jumper to the position 1-2. By default, the
resistances are not activated (position 2-3)

4.3.1.2. DeviceNet Baud rate and address

Baud Rate and Bus Address is set with WA-plan PC program.

5. ERROR MESSAGES

5.1. General

The error messages are constructed as follows:

An example:

A1111: Cable broken

AXXXX indicates an alarm class. Possible classes are:

o Severe malfunction (fatal error). This is the highest-priority error class.

Usually this means that the device is out of order. Also it is always
recommended to contact service personnel.

o Alarm. Alarm is the second-highest-priority error class. Usually an

alarm level error indicates that the WA-900 is not in normal mode of
operation thus it requires an urgent action from either operator or ser-
vice personnel.

o Warning. This usually means that some part of the device (including
scale program) does not work correctly. It also may require some ac-
tions from operator or service personnel.

o Message. This error indicates that it is not directly affecting the scale
functions but may however require some repairing actions.

o If error indication does not contain any of the codes mentioned above,
it means that this is not really an error, only a notification and it does
not require any urgent operations from user.

First two digits, “AXXXX” indicate an error ID. Please, see chapter “Error
descriptions” for individual error ID’s.

The second two digits and possibly trailing “AXXXX-X” are reserved for ser-
vice personnel use. If there is a need to contact the service personnel in
Lahti Precision Oy due to any error, please be prepared to give the full error
description when asked.

The trailing part of the string contains a short, readable error indication.

6. CALIBRATION AND SEALING

6.1. Calibration

In legal-for-trade applications, the WA-900+ configuration and calibration data are

stored to the WA-900+ circuit board. Parameter settings are accomplished with PC-
program WA-plan. Calibration is accomplished with PC-program WA-plan and or
WA-view.

6.2. Sealing

In legal-for-trade applications, the WA-900+ configuration and calibration data are

protected. When configuration of WA-900+ is complete, parameter settings can
protected either with program or jumper.

1. Software protection: Software protection can be used when scale is

connected to WA-view PC-program. Software protection means that the
value of L.f.t-counter is increased every time if calibration parameters are
changed and verification is not valid if counter values shown in the WA-
view and value in the papers are different. Software protection is acti-
vated in WA-view. Jumper WE is kept on write enable –position. Please
see Figure 2 on the page 10. Re-calibration and re-verification is possible
without opening the device. Software protection is sufficient for all legal-
for-trade applications.

2. Jumper protection: Jumper named WE in the load cell cable connec-

tion board is set to write disabled -position. Please see Figure 2 on the
page 10. Jumper protection prevents all unintentional calibration parame-
ter changes.
Note. If WE jumper is set to write disabled –position, re-calibration and
re-verification is not possible even with WA-view PC-program.

The Seal closes access to connector block by sealing the plate.

Please see Figure 27.
